"series" is the key word m8s this thing is following the story arc format you commonly see in Japanese anime and HBO dramas, though you're kinda right it's not the first one, there is HBO's Spawn was for adults and rated TV-MA, I'm sure there are other shows I don't know about.

Also, DC animated movies, new Samurai Jack and GI Joe Resolute target adults but are rated TV-14/PG-13, we don't know how "mature" this show will be, they can get away with a TV-14 rating if they don't turn it into a gorefest (which I doubt they'll do) and they don't show nips (I doubt it will have any real nudity) while still being targeted to an adult audience.

Not retro: Aria of Sorrow and Circle of the Moon on GBA if you're CFWed up. Order of Ecclesia on NDS, Dawn of Sorrow if you can get past the shoehorned touchscreen gimmick shit, Portrait of Ruin if you like terrible games.

Avoid SCIV like the fucking plague. It's garbage and tried its best to destroy everything good about the series. Inb4 casuals and 'muh SNES collection' bandwagoners.
