Looks like you bought a non-retro Dreamcast there, bud. You're gonna have to be restricted from posting about any games you play on it. I've already asked a mod to delete this thread for violating board rules. Better luck next time!

pretty sure that number thing about (2)s not playing burned games is a meme. I've never, ever seen a DC that wouldn't boot burned discs.

Also I bought it as a broken system because the dude said it didn't read discs, he included the disc he'd been using.
Is it simply scratched beyond reading or is it my laser?

Well it doesn't play CDs so isn't that the big red flag?

>pretty sure that number thing about (2)s not playing burned games is a meme.

That (2) means that it is a VA2 model, and those all had a different BIOS that had the mil-cd compatibility removed, making it impossible for them to play burned games unless you do modifications (modchip or bios replacement).

>> No.3815398

>>3815392
Yeah that's what I figured so I'm gonna get another game over the weekend.
If it doesn't read I'm hoping I just have that issue with the disc lid not latching.

I stand corrected; are they just way less common than (1) models? I've owned 3-4 DCs and I guess none of them have ever been VA2s.

If the lid's closing, it should show you a different screen in the bios as it attempts to read.

You're just very unlucky to have received this one, as it's very rare.

What are you supposed to do when your VA1 Dreamcast's laser dies?

Is it possible to replace the DC's laser assembly with a CD-ROM drive unit, losing access to factory pressed games but allowing you to play your burned backups?

They are less common since they were manufactured from late 00, and they stopped making DCs in early 2001.

>> No.3815551

Do the VA2 dreamcasts have better components/lasers in them? or Did they just remove the ability of the system itself to read CD's?

It would be nice if they at least had better parts.

You dont have to actually, they have one where it puts USB ports in the cutout where the laser of the GD-Rom would read the disc, so you can have the USB drive inside the dreamcast under the lid.

Although looking around at some of the various GD-ROM replacements, don't they cause excessive heat from the power supply? I seem to remember something about since the gd-rom isn't pulling power anymore, it might cause heat to build up or some shit. maybe that was with another loader like the SD-Card one though.

Those ones plug into the network port so you lose network connectivity plus the real deal breaker is you have to boot the software to read it from the optical drive so it's not really a replacement.

Might just need to adjust the lasers potentiometer if it still can't read discs. Lot of Dreamcast lasers are getting weaker so that might just be it.

That's the USB/HDD loader and yeah, it apparently gets pretty hot. Putting in the metal casing of your GD-rom drive helps somewhat but it still doesn't solve it. Haven't heard of any consoles frying themselves yet at least.

The GD-ROM laser can usually be fixed really easily by tweaking the potentiometer (pot tweak).
Its essentially just turning a small screw on the bottom of the drive assembly (close to where the ribbon cable connects to the mainboard) 90 degreesclockwise with a TINY flathead screwdriver (I do not recommend pliers, eyeglasses screwdrivers work best)

Might as well lubricate the drive heads (metal rods in the drive assembly that the laser moves along) and clean the pins of the power supply unit with isopropyl alcohol while you are at it.

By the way, if you ever replace the CR2032 battery for the clock, be careful. the pins that hold it in place are paper thin and will easily snap.
