Question: was he really involved with that turd?

>> No.3812346 [DELETED]

>>3812294
Here are a few questions he answered re: the game, from a November 1997 IGN interview

>N64.com: How does Yoshi's Story differ from the previous Yoshi's Island for the Super NES?

Miyamoto: They are almost identical in terms of gameplay. But each of the ideas in Yoshi's Story is something that we couldn't realize in the previous Yoshi game, and the quality is much higher. And it's "very gentle" to the player. It's basically a 2D game, but we call it a 2.5D game in which very large objects can rotate, you can move around with the 3D joystick, and you can even feel objects tremble before they move because of the Rumble Pak. And there are lots of new ideas.

N64.com: Yoshi's Story is a very good example for the style of games you prefer to make -- very clean and cartoon-like games. Considering the popularity of titles like Resident Evil and Tomb Raider, are there also plans for games with a more grown-up feel from Nintendo®?

Miyamoto: I personally like the games you mentioned, and I think that Zelda is already a step into that direction and walks a fine line. And as long as we can maintain the same high quality with our games, I think we would like to try anything.

It's like he's talking about a different game, really.

The thing with Nintendo is that, first off, they have insane amounts of money stashed. They could be unprofitable for many years and still continue to exist.

Second, Nintendo still has THE biggest franchise in the world: Pokemon, and the handheld which will always sell due to it. They also have some of the other biggest franchises too, like Smash Bros, Mario, etc, which can and do sell systems. They actually beat most Western meme games in sales on regular basis.

So can they go bankrupt? I don't believe it. Can they quit games altogether? That's also highly unlikely because of Pokemon alone.

That said, they can fuck up. And they do this quite often. Wii U is a failure and sold less than the "disaster" that was GC. 3DS is selling half of what DS did. And Switch is looking like another attempt at the same thing as Wii U, with now-usual questionable gimmick.

But, the same can be said about any other console company. Sony? PS3 lost to X360 in US, and PS Vita is a console which seemingly no one cares about aside for Japan. Microsoft? They are set to make XB One the PS3 of this gen.

All of them make fuck ups. But all three at least seem to have heads on their shoulders, and billions in other businesses or banks. Sega had neither, so it's no wonder it died as soon as it fucked up its good fortune. But Nintendo of all companies don't have much to fear.

>> No.3812964

Doesn't Nintendo have some 10's of billions of dollars sitting in a war chest? They could fail 2 generations in a row and still be back for another, and that's not even counting their handheld consoles. As long as they have their exclusives they could probably hold enough customers hostage to their systems for some x number of years.

Clearly another fucking clueless child.

Nintendo posted a profit of $300 million for last year's Christmas period - on the back of 6 year old handheld and a dead home console.

Nintendo aren't going anywhere. Get that through your skull.

Furthermore, Nintendo are the ONLY company making innovative hardware right now. They're the only ones trying.

All Sony and Microsoft are bringing to the table is "muh graficks". Whoopee fucking doo.

Consoles are DEAD. They're on their way out. Microsoft know it - they're practically going 3rd party.

And Sony's next console will be yet another shit-tier PC rig with it's own exclusives.

The question isn't 'when will Nintendo go 3rd party'? It's 'when will Sony'?

Consoles weren't that far from computers all the time. Companies designed custom chips because general-purpose chips weren't that fast at making a good picture.

That's exactly what's killing consoles off. There's been an unavoidable streamling of tech over the past 15 years. And consoles have and ALWAYS will contain obsolete tech as soon as it's released.

The problem facing consoles now it how far PC gaming has come. It's no longer a compatibility minefield. It's pretty fucking easy to pick a laptop that will blow consoles clear out of the water performance-wise as well as providing many other things consoles cannot.

Also, I'm saying the Switch is innovative because of it's chipset. I'm just saying at least Nintendo are bringing something to the table other than a generic shit-tier PC rig.

Nintendo always places bets on gimmicks.

I don't understand why it's necessary to be defensive about consoles. Essentially there's no difference between consoles and computers, because consoles are computers with custom input devices and custom manufacturer-approved software.

Hey you wanna play games? OK but you gotta move around like a madman and also our controllers are shit so buy an add on that adds accuracy. Nintendo near the end of the Wii's life decided to ditch the motion control meme and just made a bunch of games compatible with the "pro" controller and GameCube controller.
The Wii u was them backpedaling a bit with the motion control, but was still gimmicky AF and had uncomfortable forced use of its muh tablet gimmick (said by even die hard fans, for example Star Fox)
The DS was like: hey fuck buttons play with this shitty touchscreen and it was annoying AF. Most games didn't even use the touchscreen as a touchscreen and just ended up putting a minimap or whatever on the bottom, also it had less than n64 graphics.
>Inb4 graphics don't matter
Console wars revolved around graphics and graphics were the main selling/marketing point of retro consoles and games (eg donkey Kong country)
Sure it was sold well, but that's because it was made for the kid and casual majority. I remember being at GameStop back when the PSP was out and a 10 year old kid was asking his mom to buy him a PSP and the clerk told his mom that it was for mature games only and wasn't appropriate for kids and she ended up buying him a DS. Sure he may have been dumb, but how many soccer moms may have googled for 3 seconds PSP and saw the news stories about PSP browser being used to watch porn or some other bs like that (Google PlayStation pornable) and immediately turn away to googling Nintendo and seeing little pokemon creatures and a happy plumber guy. Everyone over 13 had a PSP at that point and it focused on games in a traditional sense. No crazy gimmicks, no weird screens, no meme concepts, etc. Tbh I think thats why the Vita died. No one asked for a gimmicky accelerometer and a back touchpad.
Nintendo lives on only by name recognition, if not for the Nintendo brand, people would despise their consoles.

Hmm, let's make a tablet but with controllers, And use SD card looking things as the game medium.
Nintendo is fucking out of touch. Just look at Mario run, it's like 10$ USD for a few levels and they said they wouldn't add more, even when a typical runner game is free.
Tablets these days have graphics just as good or better than the Wii u, especially the ones with Nvidia Tegra chips.
In the end after the hype dies, Nintendo will have another failed console on their hands while instead of making a gaming console, they made a gaming tablet that can basically do the same as a tablet with a Bluetooth controller and a Chromecast or stream tablet to TV dongle

Naw fuck Nintendo. Nintendo succeeded because they did their own thing with powerful hardware, great CS support, and games. They've lost most of that. And I own a Wii U before you call me a shill for another company. The only console I bought in the last 10 years was a Wii U. Nintendo should had got more hardcore as the years went on. Instead they went the other direction to the point that it's so casual and underpowered people wont even buy CoD on their consoles. The Switch has unique selling points:

A handheld/console hybrid which you take with you on the go and then INSTANTLY drop it into a dock to play on your TV. That's very forward thinking and it's the direction which a lot of future tech is headed.

The joycons detach and form their own controller or can used as two separate controllers. The versatility of the system allows it to instantly -ahem- switch from a single player experience to a two player experience.

The jury is still out on the icecube tech and IR cam. Personally I don't think much of them.

The Wii was actually a pretty innovative machine. The motion gimmick caught on with the casual crowd. That's where a lot of the sales came from. People fucking love Wii Sports man.

All in all it was a decent console, although I agree it was a step down from the Gamecube. Not as bad as the WiiU though, which failed in part because it had so few attractive mainline Nintendo games (Just a few Mario ones I think, no Zelda or Metroid or Fire Emblem).

Nintendo needs to get its shit together when it comes to mainline games, and just make sure there's a good amount available from the start. Other M might have been shit, but that doesn't mean pepole don't want a new Metroid game. Just listen to your fans when it comes to the gripes about that game, and try again.

Just like the 3DS. That sold more than 60 million units and counting and is nowhere near capable of delivering the kind of gaming experience the switch can.

It's both.
In future you will have ONE device which pretty much does everything. You won't have a set-top box for your TV. You won't have music system. You won't have a PlayStation 7, 8 or 9.

Everything will be an app on one device. Your TV subscription will be an app - you will watch movies and shows on the go and then come home, drop it in a dock and it will be on your TV.

The PlayStation will an app on your device for which you will pay sony a subscription. You'll stream games direct to the device which you can play portable or, again, dock it with your TV.

This is a pipe dream. But it is absolutely the future that is heading our way in the next couple of decades. Some will be repulsed by it - I know I will have trouble - but if there is one absolute, undeniable truth about technology, it's that CONVENIENCE will always be the driving factor.

So in this regard, Nintendo are actually ahead of the curve.

Sorry buddy, they're not. The switch, besides games and a Miiverse-esque social platform, will at most, have Netflix. Now look at for example Xbox. Not only do they have Netflix but other streaming platforms, web browsers, live TV, multistaking, etc. I don't like the Xbox but it is way ahead of your predicted curve. It was called Xbox one because it was an all-in-ONE machine, games, TV, music, movies, YouTube, etc. Switch will have, again, at most Netflix. And knowing Nintendo, they'll only let you use it when it's docked. And if not, well good luck watching a series or more than 2 movies with that 3 hour battery life

Do you want to play full made for TV/monitor games on a 7inch screen with everything on super low? A gaming tablet with a dock, but let's say it is. Every console has been a flop since they started the stupid gimmicks, besides the DS. No one wants gimmicks. Remember the shitstorm when the switch was revealed to be yet another meme gimmicky console with motion controls? EVERYONE was mad. Even hardcore fanboys asking, why can't Nintendo make a normal console. No one asked for arm flailing controls for the Wii, and while it had good sales numbers, it was only because of hype and moms buying it for their kids or themselves to be active. Not even half a year later I was seeing them at GameStop for 70$, after the gimmick faded away. Remember everyone got mad when the Wii U was revealed to be yet another gimmicky console? No one asked for a shitty kind of a tablet kind of a TV console. Remember the storm when games forced people to use the gimmick even though it was uncomfortable to look at the screen and to the tablet and back and forth?? Remember the hype for starfox and how fast it died when people realized that they pushed the gimmick so hard that aiming and flying was nearly impossible
Because you had to look down at the tablet to aim but look at the tv to see where you were flying, at the same time?
I don't see people asking for yet another gimmick filled console, yet here it is again. Why not just make a normal console for Nintendo exclusives? It's worked from NES up till Gamecube, why wouldn't it work now??

>Just don't buy the generation defining games that the vast majority of modern gamers play.

Exactly. Just because a game (or movie or song or book) is popular doesn't mean you will necessarily like it, and there's nothing wrong with that. I never cared for platformers, but Mario's popularity didn't keep me from playing other SNES games. This is the same situation except outside of the top games there's a lot more variety now than there used to be.

CoD being popular is only bad if you only want to play what's popular. I think that's a short sighted and stupid attitude to have though.

>> No.3813847

And ignore all the shit that CoD establishes to be ok? Like the DLC etc.

>Also not seeing the logic of calling modern games not bad if you have to avoid the games that are the top sellers.

Because if I went with that logic I would also think 8 and 16 bit games are bad because it was the height of popularity for platformers which I find almost all boring.

I'm just saying it would be foolish for me to discount all 8 and 16 bit games because I happened not to like the most popular genre. That's exactly how I feel about modern FPS games. I don't care about them, but that doesn't matter to me because there's already a ton of other stuff to play.

No I am saying the opposite. I am saying my personally not liking them doesn't make them bad. It just makes them games I happened not to like.

Exactly the same as my not liking modern FPS games doesn't make them bad, it just makes them games I happen not to like.

The 8 and 16 bit eras are fundamentally the same as the modern era in that regard. The most popular games don't necessarily appeal to me all that much, but there are still plenty of games from every year that I end up loving so that's what I care about.

>Consoles are DEAD. They're on their way out.
By pure sales, "traditional" consoles are doing just fine. Just look at the numbers on picrelated. The 2 big consoles sell about the same if not more as in the previous gen, it's simply that PS4 has way bigger share over XB One. The market stayed about the same since PS2, despite lowering interest from Japan. If one console is dead today, it's Wii U.
Consoles really face no competition from anything. PC? Piracy killed it. TV smart boxes? They're a joke and not suited for gaming.

>Nintendo are the ONLY company making innovative hardware right now.
Biggest-selling Nintendo games are literally the same as their older games. Pokemon? Smash? Zelda? Mario? Mario Kart? Animal Crossing? Are you seriously implying they're innovative? They're all incremental updates, or slight evolutions at best.
The few exceptions only serve the rule, and unsurprisingly, other consoles also have those.

>All Sony and Microsoft are bringing to the table is "muh graficks".
Because that's what sells. High budgets mean high risks. Also, you disregard completely that Sony's 1st party output is very small in comparison. It's mostly 3rd parties that grant them console sales.
Nintendo simply know that they can't compete in that niche. That's why they deliberately went separate ways with everyone. It worked for them with Wii, not so much with Wii U.

> And Sony's next console will be yet another shit-tier PC rig with it's own exclusives.
Yes. Explain how it is bad on its own, please. It will still sell and get all the 3rd party support.

You are a retarded hick. And for all your whining about how terrible everything is now, all my concern is how I am going to spend my limited time on all the great games there are to play.

So stay angry and stupid I guess. Keep raging at the games industry because people exist who like different things from you. I'm going to play some video games.

Personally I don't care if the traditional console goes away or changes so long as we keep getting amazing games and I see no sign of that changing. I know it's hip and cool around here to say modern gaming sucks because we're here to talk about old games, but as much as I loved and still love many of the games of my youth, I think gaming in general just keeps getting better and better.
