Tanks are controlled by running the tracks at different speeds make turns.
The classic retro game with tank controls is Atari's Battlezone. It was even adapted into a simulator for the US armed forces.

They're controls used for tanks. Many autists use the word incorrectly to describe controls that weren't actually ever used in a tank. Much like "retro"

Panzer Elite is my favorite armour sim, I don't care what anyone has to say.

They're a reasonable way of moving in a 3D environment with limited old control setups.

They are fucking horrible and unintuitive, no matter how much fun you still managed to have playing games with them (despite them) twenty years ago.

^ this. It's really not hard to get the hang of tank control.
If you're an hour into one of those games and you're still sucking at moving around, that's your fault, not the controls.

Work good for certain types of games

Casuals meme on them because OH NO I'M NOT AUTOMATICALLY GOOD AT THING. If something that minor stands between you and a good game you should probably consider a different hobby.

They can be shit but only so much as any other control scheme can be shit.

They're not very good, but some people will argue that they're good because they're not good, because "it makes the game harder" as if that isn't an extremely shitty excuse to do a bad job. There's no reason you can't have difficulty with good controls too.

I know exactly what it means, and anytime anyone shows unwillingness to git gud at a game and blames the setup for not being "intuitive" I'm going to wheel it out.

Outside of tank controls though I mostly have only had to bitch about this in non-/vr/ games though.

>> No.3806235

>>3806225
Not really, if you've ever tried it with the secondary controls it works fine, if you keep holding the stick in the same direction your character will continue his path, if you feel you need to readjust for the new perspective, then immediately let go and grab it again, it's doable in a split second.

I was never once fucked by the camera when playing like this, even when a Hunter was right on my ass and one misstep would have spelled my doom.

>> No.3806236

>>3806229
Tank controls aren't really so much difficult as just frustrating and floaty feeling. I can get used to them but they consistently *feel* bad.

If I had to make a comparison, imagine if in Doom, you had to really press the key down hard to turn, and you turn at a slow, fixed rate. I know it's not quite like that, but that's how it feels like, like my player character is being needlessly sluggish on me, as if he's spiting me.

Just don't think about it too much.
Keep playing and you'll get used to it. If it constantly bothers you then you're probably not enjoying the game as a whole.

Yeah, nah.

HOORRAY, HOOPS AND LOOPS!

That's gonna come off real in handy when you are trying to escape the Crimson Heads.

Tank controls on their own aren't really bad, the problem was that in ogRE (the original US release of RE, not Director's Cut) they removed the Aim Assisting (the Auto turn when you pull your weapon) because "muh rentals moneeeezzz", hence they put the feature back on the re-releases, as for REmake, to me the issue is that they made regular turning so fucking slow with 2.2 seconds of delay (calm down, i am talking about actual game delay, not CRT vs Plasma Input lag wars, don't start, plus i play the wii on CRT) and its not even like you can actually adjust yourself via 10° or 15° or so, it has to be 25° to 25° on REmake, whereas on ogRE you can rotate normally and adjust yourself with the weapon on hold to shoot at the very least, this is obviously noticeable on "real survival mode" on REmake, specially during the fights with the hunters and the giant spider, making them painful.

Seriously, go ahead and try.

Then I guess you weren't into action games back in the day.
Tomb Raider revolutionized gaming back in the day. And guess what? Tank controls.

>> No.3806261

>>3806256
Oh and forgot to say, on REmake, they FUCKED UP the knife, it's next to useless, no joke, it has 1.7 seconds of delay, i could swear it's faster on ogRE, i have seen runs with the knife to regular zombies, but on REmake on top of it all, it has poor range, all it does is to remove the spider vines on the giant spider boss room.

>> No.3806264

One good thing about tank controls is for example, they are very precise.

Also, use the digipad, and... forget the Xbox controller. Because bad digit pad.
Well it's the way action adventures have been played back in the day.

>That's gonna come off real in handy when you are trying to escape the Crimson Heads.
I never did, desu.

I'd either fry the zombie bodies whenever I had the opportunity (often carrying the kerosene in my inventory at all times), or I'd memorize which I couldn't/didn't fry and be prepared for when I went into that area. Assuming you're not stuck with 9mm and little ammo, Crimson Heads aren't TOO much of a problem. Though they can hurt like fuck if they get in hits on you, obviously.
I really liked the Crimson Heads as a concept at any rate, having to hurry and put in effort to destroy a dead body before it becomes something horrible and dangerous has a really cool and tense quality to it.

I did feel that the knife wasn't particularly good in REmake though.

VERY quick, and can be incredibly easy if you manage your health/drugs(pretty much just walk through the levels in your overcharged mode and heal when your health is low). The voices and cutscenes are quite cringeworthy though, agreed.
How far did you get?

>> No.3806393

>"wah wah tank controls so hard" T__T
>literally took seven-year-old me five minutes to totally master them

People find them so perplexing at first when they're entirely simple. If they were impenetrable or at least extremely detrimental to gameplay, then RE would never have been a success.

>> No.3806417

You guys think tank controls are bad you should play Alien: Resurrection. The game's control setup is its most terrifying element. The left analog stick moves you forward, back, and strafes right and left, while the right analog stick turns you and can be used to look up and down. Too often, you'll turn to face a foe and find that your weapon is aimed at the floor or ceiling while the alien gleefully hacks away at your midsection. Add to the mix a few other head scratchers - such as how the triangle button controls item and health use - and you'll be wondering how Sony let this get by without requesting a few different control configuration options.
