Hey /vr/! How do I get other people into playing old shitty games with me? Nine times out of ten, it's just me, my NES/SNES/whatever I feel that day and alcohol. I have a couple of friends who are into /vr/, but neither of them are too social really. Am I just fucked here? My significant other will play /vr/ stuff with me if I am desperate, but it feels really forced and they clearly don't desire it most of the time.

I have found it to be a mostly hopeless endeavor. I have been able to get friends to play old shmups and beat em ups with me and stuff and they have fun, but they never ask to do it again. It's always my idea. The only friend I could do it consistently with is actually into /vr/ himself. So you can't really force it unless you make new friends.

Don't force people to play what they don't want. This is particularly important when it comes to enforcing autistic rules from a gook toon image board irl. If you want to get people to play SSB the best way to gently coax them into it is to play Brawl and laugh at how slow it is.

Play the way others are playing. Don't get shitfaced if they're not drinking and want competitive play. Don't be a tryhard if everyone just wants to get shitfaced and fuck around.

Don't limit yourself to a couple of your bestest aspie retro friends. Get other people involved. I often play with my kids friends and nieces and nephews and random friends they bring along.

I've tried playing some retro vidya with my friends in the past, but with mixed to poor results. The weirdest thing is that two of them have a retro game collection like me (although they started collecting after they saw me do it, so maybe hipsters?) and yet we find it hard to choose one game we all want to play. Mostly I've noticed that when I want to play NES games, they just can't do it, most NES games are too hard for them (we played Bible Buffet a few times though and they love it). We once all played Mario 64 together and finished it, and that was glorious. Most of the time though, they're only interested in very well known retro games and only from fifth gen forward. We played some Crash and other PS1 titles, as well as Godzilla on the XBOX.

What I'm trying to say is, maybe you should dig and find out what their favorite games are and play those. Maybe just don't ask someone to play Terror T.R.A.X. on your Apple pippin or stuff like that. Stick to the most common games and consoles.

Try a bunch of different genres until one clicks with your current friends. Try taking turns on single player, doing co-op, and competitive. Try puzzle games, fighters, and especially beat 'em ups.

Keep an eye out for new people to play games with. One of my coworkers started an old game night after he found out I was into old games and I've met a lot of people through it. Of course now they mostly just play Cards Against Humanity at game night but you can't win them all.

The only time I ever pulled it off was around Christmas time a few years ago. An old friend was in town and when he came over I was playing X-Men 2 on my Genesis. I said "hey why don't we take turns playing the levels" and we ended up sitting there all day and beating the game that way.

Truth is I was unpopular for playing /vr/ with even when /vr/ was /v/. There were like a couple of kids our age in our entire village into N64 and despite this some of them would never, ever invite me to play, despite seeing them every day and talking about N64 with them. It's emotionally draining to try to force things so in the end I just got tired of it and gave up.
