I just want to get a discussion going. Many people who revisit SOTN find that the Reverse Castle isn't a lot of fun. There aren't many meaningful upgrades and most of the equipment you'll find will be useless.

This. When I started Reverse Castle, I was excited that there was gonna be lots of new music. Even if they just played the same stuff as the main castle it would've been better.

I enjoyed the Inverted Castle. It gave me a reason to use the animal forms more often and the new monsters and bosses were pretty cool.

>> No.3796475

I thought it was a boring way to pad the game because if you've already explored the castle there's nothing new to see. It is kind of interesting because you're not used to playing it upside-down and it's still playable while being upside. Good level design?

>> No.3796636

What pisses me off about the reverse castle is that double jumping is never enough to reach most platforms, so you see yourself forced to use the clunky superjump all the time.

yeah, 3 BGM was my biggest disappointment. I knew it as soon as I went into a new area and Lost Painting was still playing.

While the bosses were finally a step up from the "glorified midboss" stuff of the first castle, the package felt a little half-baked.

That being said, the visuals, music, and gameplay (however easy) were still satisfying enough for me to carry on the momentum and enjoy myself to the end.

Flipping the map is an interesting idea, although it's too disorienting; the areas feel like less love was put into them. I imagine they had budget or time constraints, and Konami felt like they were already taking enough chances as it was.

Regardless, the gameplay is intact, the game becomes substantially more challenging, and the stuff you find in the inverted castle is interesting. I can't think of anything to complain about except some of the visuals and the lack of music variety. And being able to play as Richter sweetens the deal. SotN remains a classic.

I find it funny when people complain about backtracking in Metroidvanias. I always felt it was the only genre where backtracking wasn't a tedious bore, because of the level design. In 3D open-world games, you often have moments where you're basically doing nothing but holding forward for a while in an open field.

So, which is your favourite Castle design?

For each new game that came out, people always compared it to SotN, saying SotN's was better. I dunno about that, I really love the Castles in the other games.
I love Order of Ecclesia's castle, although it's smaller than the rest. Dat music, man.
Hamony of Dissonance's castle has the most detail to it, especially when you change the castle, there are some interesting changes in the background. They put a damn lot of effort into details in that one.
I don't think I need to say anything about Circle of the Moon, I'm sure you all agree it's a damn good castle, it's fucking huge.
Aria of Sorrow's castle is pretty decent.
Dawn of Sorrow's castle is about equal to Aria of Sorrow in being good.
Regretfully I've never played Portrait of Ruin, I keep forgetting to buy it. Well, I did play it for about a half hour at my cousins place when it came out. Maybe i'll buy it when I get my income tax.

I'd say my favourite castle is maybe a tie between Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance (even though HoD is confusing as fuck first time around) with Order of Ecclesia as 2nd favourite.

Classicvania and Metroidvania are rather different. Do you enjoy the Metroid series? If you do or if you haven't played it or any games in the genre, I'd recommend trying out SOTN to see what you think about it. In terms of Classicvania, if you enjoyed the first one, jump to the third and go from there, Simon's Quest isn't indicative of anything in the rest of the series.

DoS is a superior version of AoS. Loved the ability to level up souls by collecting more of them, crafting too. To say nothing about the better Julius mode.

AoS is only superior in atmosphere and art style, that's where DoS is half-assed really. Half the locations are bleak hackjobs with clashing old/new art directions. If it wasn't for this it'd be the best in every possible way.

>>3799113
I just replayed and beat AoS several weeks ago, after one of these threads. I haven't had to grind ONCE in the entire game. The only exception was when I wanted the Peeping Eye soul, because it shows breakable walls and I hate missing anything. But it wasn't for experience anyway.

Granted, I knew some tricks like double hit when you land from a jump. I also knew in general what the heck I was doing and remembered some useful souls from DoS. But the point still stands.

I breezed through the game without much trouble, and used 2 souls for 90% of the game (Skeleton and Evil Butcher). I was thinking it was getting a little bit hard at the end, but then I found Claim Solais and it turned into a cakewalk again.

Collected 100% souls without much trouble too after I got the Soul Eater Ring. Finished Hard Mode afterwards. Whoever complains it's grindy is just doing something very wrong.
