I wanna play old Pokemon (GB,GBC,GBA era) but can't choose what to buy. I know, the SP AGS-101 is the best as it has a backlit, but it's also very expensive to buy so it's out of the question for me. So, should I get a normal GBA and mod it with a backlit, or get the SP AGS-001 which is frontlit? In other words, is a frontlit 'good enough' to play in dark (vs. no lit) or should I really go with a back one?

I know the original GB backlits are quite cheap to buy but what about GBA?

Original GBA with AGS-101 backlight mod.

Get it here so you can have a brightness toggle: retromodding.com

And if you have extra money to burn, get the glass screen and some kind of Hi-Fi speaker mod called GBAmp3 while you're at it.

You just need your own original GBA while you're at it but you can also replace the shell and buttons.

The original GBA is more ergonomically comfortable, especially for someone with large hands.

I do have both AGS-001 and 101.
001 works fine with sun, of course the backlit is better than the frontlit, but is not a gamebreaker. so of course is "good enough" to play in dark.
Also, don´t get crazy with 101, battery lasts dramatically less than the 001 one (specially in the highest level, wich you should use outdoors) and have some ghosting problems. So if you don´t have the money for a 101 or the time for modding a classic gba go for a 001 and enjoy playing.

seriously though. just get a 3DS. it's stupid simple to put a custom firmware on. just don't update the firmware until after you've modded it. it'll play all your retro nintendo shit gb/c/a/nes/snes.

Get a Micro you pleb.
>b-b-but muh ESS PEEE WUN OH WUN!
Yeah, enjoy your shitty refresh rate and oversaturated colors. Also, no headphone jack unless you buy some garbage 3rd party accessory.
>but muh UH-RI-JU-NUL GBA WIT BACK LITE!
Yeah, enjoy your fucking disposable batteries and garbage SP 101 screen.
The garbage 001 (frontlit) model should not even be considered.

Micro + flash cart is God's gift to man. Don't be a cheap fucker and invest in it.
Best screen: highest pixel density of all GBA models, has the most brightness settings, and has proper colors unlike the 101.
Best ergonomics. Comfortable to hold and buttons are clicky and responsive as fuck, unlike the mushy piece of shit SP buttons.
Has headphone jack.
Comes with a nice pouch to keep it in to keep away dust.

OP wants to play GB/GBC games also. And it's much more expensive than an AGS-101

OP, buy an AGS-001. You'll enjoy it. I know I did when I was younger, at night too. If you need headphones, buy an adapter.

Here you go OP these are the advantages to ever way you can play GB(C) games minus emulation.

Its worth noting if you really want to go in depth to understand the differences in quality you should watch My Life In Gamings RGB Masterclass stuff its good albeit a bit long in the tooth.

Literally this.

I also watch the My Life In Gaming RGB Masterclass series.

Also, here are the GBA mods I recommend from MetalJesusRocks (even though I don't like MetalJesusRocks that much): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEsY6d4QSFE

I recommend the RGB Masterclass series to those guys on the CRT threads and for those using Framemeisters alike.

I do prefer CRTs, though.

Everdrive-GBA has Goomba emulator and is said to run full speed.

I still recommend an actual Everdrive-GB for pre-GBA games, though.

>> No.3789453

>>3789143
Not without emulation.

It has to do with the fact that GBA's have GBC hardware in them, and that's toggled by a physical switch on the cart connector.
The cart has to press that switch to make the GBA boot in GBC mode.

Look into pocket nes and goomba color.

My setup is a micro with an ez flash iv. It really is fucking amazing. I also got a pouch for it online for like $3 shipped to keep it protected.

I'd also like a 101 but I'll wait till I find one cheap.

>> No.3789618

Sounds cool, so the Everdrive-GBA or EZ Flash can have the emulators for GB and GBC. Can it also emulate NES and SNES well? What about Sega systems?

If you want to find an AGS-101 for cheaper, you need to look for people who don't know what they have.

If you're in the US that means look for pearl pink and pearl blue GBA's with the label on the bottom missing on your local Craigslist or flea market.

Bought a sp-101 a short while ago by trading in my 001 and some moolah and I do not regret it that much.

The slower refresh rate is noticable, but your eyes kind of adapt to it,unless you play games with drastic pixel changes, but honestly,it's not that big of a deal.

The micro is small as shit, you have to hold one in your hands to actually understand how small it is,plus it costs A LOT. Don't fall for this meme,I dare say.
