What was the best year for video games?

My vote goes to 1983. The ZX Spectrum was hitting its stride with the beginnings of a great library, the C64 was hitting British shores with a bang, and arcade games like Star Wars and Tapper were released. It was a great year. 1994 was also great with games like Super Metroid, Doom II, Sonic 3, Jazz Jackrabbit, and Killer Instinct being released, as well as the Sega 32X and, in Japan, the Saturn. What do you think, /vr/?

1993: daytona usa, super street fighter II, virtua fighter, samurai spirits, mortal kombat II, cadillacs & dinosaurs, samurai aces, nba jam etc etc

1993 really felt exciting because the whole industry actually started innovating and new tech was arriving everywhere. The neo geo started to have really cool games. Capcom released the cpsII system with qsound and everyone including CNN was like mortaaaaaal kombaaaaaaat.
What a year...

NES beat out SMS in every way. SNES beat out Genesis toward the end of the generation and has more memorable long term games, since the large library of sports games on Genesis are now irrelevant. PSX, PS2, and PS4 won their respective generations, although an argument could be made that N64 produced more classics that you'd want to revisit today.

I did get an SNES in 1990 but I spent way more total time with Genesis and was firmly on the Genesis side of console war stuff.

So you just have a different opinion. I think the Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox 360, and Xbox One were better. Unless you have some substantial reasoning I don't see why you object. I also don't think Phantasy Star is even a top 20 game on the MS.

So you're baiting then. I'm always happy to debate the relative strengths and weaknesses of Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast but Master System is a side dish even with FM. NES is in a whole different league but at least Master System has lots of unique games worth playing. I'd be curious to hear a single good reason to own an Xbox One.
