Yeah. Graal thread.

>> No.378561

Holy fuck, Graal.

When I was younger I used to play the shit out of the Unholy Nation playerworld.

Much more recently I was into the handheld iPhone/Facebook Classic version. Was in the first guild to reach 1k and 5k tower hours respectively. Haven't really played much since both of those guilds retired.

Holy Crap I wasn't the only one?

I played from 1.2.something to 1.4.1 right before the whole graal 2000 crap. I've made so many levels unfortantly I've also lost so many of the levelpacks that the game isn't coheriant. I have somewhere around 400 levels still on my machine most from offical server versions.

This is the game that really got me into programming. Working full time as a software developer so I probably owe Stefen Knoor some credit lol

They're LTTP that you can script anything into.

I remember some guy in a previous thread said "Let's be real, Minecraft is MUCH more expansive."

Nay. Minecraft may have a z-axis, but Graal has a very accessible script code you can get into and completely change the game with. The big problem is, you need a lot of other people's level on hand to sample how they did whatever the fuck they did. After that though, it's gravy.

>> No.378950

>>378917

they're playable. At some point Graal basically did get dumbed down to an oversized chatroom due to lack of content and a split up playerbase among a couple dozen servers with an already crippled population due to p2p. Wipes of content really killed the Classic server, along with the aforementioned p2p.

Anyway, 478 MB rar file is being uploaded now. It has older versions of Graal in addition to a bunch of server levels, so you may have to sort through it to figure out which ones are levels and which ones are old versions of Graal. They're appropriately named, though.

Some of these date back to 1997.

It really is a tragedy. Graal had so much raw potential. But between the events you just described, and the overall slackassery from Stefan, and the sheer evil of Unixmad, Graal is nearly just a memory now.

I fucked loved Graal. I played back when you could actually beat the game. Get the golden Graal or whatever.

I was there before and after they started taking down content. When they removed the main quest I just thought "oh well they must have something better planned". Of course it was fucking nothing. At one point, I had more hearts and items than some of the mods because I had gotten them before they were taken down.

Player worlds kind of ruined Graal for me. As well as Graal 2000 or whatever. I played on that pay to play server but there was too much grind. Nice lighting effects though for the time.

But, god damn. Graal was the perfect MMO for me. It's a bit of a metroidvania. Tons of hearts and items all over the world and the only way was to just explore and find secrets. Shit was amazing.

I played the server with my brother in January, the server goes down occasionally and we had to ask the owner to put it back up, which he did pretty quickly. Some of the scripts don't work at all, like the ship, so you'll have to swim to CC. The quests are even buggier than on the real server when there are multiple people in the room. They had to modify a lot of scripts over years to make them even function with the gservers they're using

Do you have the levels/scripts from Classic from around 2004, before they ruined the server by removing all of the content (the same as from Graal The Adventure pretty much)?

I think management wanted a more "professional" game. A lot of the older quests pre 1.41 had no over-achieving story or objective. They were literally quests random people made and were put on the server without much debugging or testing. Some, like the Krull (sp? Been a while) Castle quest had profanities like "FUCK!" sneaked in there. The content removal was just an effort to streamline things and give a big overhaul. Supposedly, not even the fishing heart was supposed to be a part of the game and was added in secretly without the LATs knowing.

For some reason, though, Tyhm's work on the revamping was culled once again (he was responsible for the Hera system and whatnot). I wasn't ever sure what the reason for that was. Maybe Tyhm dissented a bit.

>> No.379372

>>379362

in any case, Tyhm's effort didn't really remove anything, just made it more cohesive and professional. The second content removal that basically turned Classic into a Game Coordinator Mario Party online game was something management from the higher ups wanted without realizing there wasn't much of a playerbase (and therefore working population) to tap into. And then it stagnated. Really really terribly. In my opinion, even Graal Reborn should fall back on maybe a maximum of 3 servers to host as the playerbase currently for even the free version can't sustain more than that without splitting it terribly.

They don't do that anymore. Now that shit is recurring. And if your account is temp-banned for some reason, you'll lose that old status. It's total bullshit.
Anyway. Even after it went P2P, major improvements were made to classic. I wish I could find the levels they made for that, because some of that shit was AMAZING. Pre-rendered backgrounds are very easy to do. Hell, you can even do them in RPG Maker. However, each image is going to take up pallets and space, and you might need two or three for a map depending on what's in it. Say you had a floating island with trees on it, you would need one for the ground, one for the trees, and another for the sky background.

That's an extreme example though, this assumes that all three layers use pre-rendered images. Things like trees and smaller details might not.

I actually did parallax mapping back in 2002 for RPG Maker, but nobody used the idea because it fucking skyrocketed the filesizes into the 50-100+ MB range. Now the most skilled RPG Maker users put it to fantastic use.

I wouldn't be surprised if I was the one that invented the technique.

I FUCKING FOUND IT
I knew there a project before Kingdoms that was closer to the original game but with big improvements, but eventually evolved into Kingdoms. I argued about it in a thread in /v/ but couldn't find anything on it to prove it.
This site has two builds of it: New World. The project that would become Kingdoms. It featured more detailed graphics, graphic layers, a new body system, equipping things to s and d (some items would perform different depending on where they were. Sword would swing on S and stab on D,) support for 3D ground (though I never did see it used in the builds I played,) and probably other shit I don't know about.

I can't fucking believe it. Though these builds seem farther along than the ones I remember playing back in the day.

I also remember taking bits and pieces of the interface graphics and skinning them into the current versions at the time because I liked them so much.

There is. One version is older and from the period around late '99 to 2003. Graal The Adventure is from 2004-2006 (well after P2P was instated) and is more fleshed-out and cohesive. The straight up heart rewards were replaced with heras which you traded for hearts increasing quest counts and items such as the Birdshot, Rat form, the Zorbi Ring to swim underwater, etc.

Sadly, this version of Graal Classic is buggy without an NPC server and requires modifcation to work correctly, which the Graal Reborn team did a fair amount of work on to get it to work right. Also it's highly unavailable. The GR team has a copy of the level files but they don't share it.

Still the OP of this post. The reason I still even play anymore is that I have one of those "graal classic" accounts that got grandfathered in, where you only had to pay once to play forever and only had to pay gold to play their exclusive gold servers (Graal Kingdoms, etc... They're terrible.)

Yeah they had made reasonable progress before deciding to shut it down. Unfortunately, "reasonable progress" took several years with scattered updates every 1~7 months. However, despite their overblown focus on community events and their misguided sense of what it meant to maintain playerbase; the quests and world - what really mattered - were looking pretty decent.

But alas. Now unmanned, its final fate is to drift eternally as a reanimated approximation of what it could have been.

Certainly worth a quick play-through, though.

Graal Reborn seems to have a focus to do something with a more free and open source version of the game, but their community is rather small. It's been butchered.
I was reading on that Graal Bible that after a botchd attempt to get the server ready for NPC Server, it was decided to rebuild the server from scratch. It would seem that is about as far as they got before it was decided to discontinue it around the end of January 2013. One of the server head's major reasons was a lack of playerbase because this playerworld version still required a subscription to access fully while the iPhone/Facebook server is free. Apparently the iPhone/Facebook server is still the old original.

However I have to applaud the rebuild effort. Everything's put together really nicely. I've seen a lot of little references to the past dotted around, too. I'm going to go on later and take a bunch of screenshots. Assuming I'll even be able to post them. For now, here's some gravestone inscriptions.

Fucking.

Graal.

This is the first MMO I had ever played, way back in 2000 to probably 2004, maybe even later. It's the first one I ever shelled out money for too. I had saved up weeks of lunch money just to fund a few months for it, and had to convince my parents it was okay to trade them cash for use of their credit card. The playerworlds were fun as hell, I've unfortunately forgotten the name of all of the ones I played on. I stuck around G2k1 for a while, trying to collect instruments and hats, and roleplaying. Then I went over to Graal Kingdoms, doing the same thing and not understanding the RPG mechanic at all. I had a house right on the corner of the Forest Kingdom that I lost the key to, and somebody eventually walled me out somehow.

One of the coolest moments in that server was when I comprised a "kingdom anthem" on a flute you could play with the keyboard, and got a sack of money and a ballin' magic ring for it.

It was also the first and last time I'd ever pose as a girl online. Holy fuck that got me into a lot of trouble.

I don't know about the iPhone and Facebook servers, but the accounts for the PC Client for back then are indeed still alive. Classic on iPhone is separate from Classic on PC, though I hear the iPhone and Facebook servers are one in the same. Don't take my word for this.

As a more concrete answer, the iPhone/Facebook servers are probably more in line with the game from back in 2000 since there was an attempt to rebuild Classic PC's world from scratch, but ultimately failed and the server is now discontinued, though still accessible and playable.

Hah, I just tried to reset my password, I was surprised I used my e-mail already back then. Got a new one sent but upon connecting it tells me I am globally banned the reason being that I should contact support and show them my paypal transaction id. I didn't even know paypal back then, this is gonna be fun.

>> No.440510

I had a pay-once-get-everything account. Sadly I lost all the details and even the e-mail address I used to register the account with. Man I really loved the game back then. The dungeons and bosses were challenging, at least for 14 years old me.

I found fishing equipment and a Fighting Fish from the early 00's in the basement of Christian's Shop.

Good luck. Unixmad is a gigantic french jew who was known for banning multiple one-time payment accounts for even the smallest infraction. It a wonder I never got banned, but I kept a pretty low profile and never posted on the forums.

After stopping a thief and being rewarded with the Bomb Bag at Christian's Shop, I was sent to the Graal Police Station listen in on the interrogation. The GPs wouldn't let me in , so I blew a hole in the wall and listened anyway. I couldn't believe what happened next. Still can't.

Two dungeons later, each with their own gimmicks, I finally gain access to Graal Castle. The place is considerably smaller than it used to be, but I found some old friends, previously located in Zol's Pub, later moved to the castle in 00 or 01, where it seems they've stayed.
It seems the Gnome Cave was going to be changed from a Baddy infestation to a dragon infestation, if it had been re-implemented.

In the top corner you can see the new look of the Power Glove, my reward for killing the mid-boss of the third dungeon.

Finally, a shot that's a personal nostalgia bomb.
Back when Classic was getting expanded after p2p started, Thym was running a series of contests to replace generic NPCs with ones modeled after players. I was one of the winners who had their likeness put onto a guard in the castle barracks.
As I was wandering the server, I noticed there were a bunch of NPCs done in the same way, but I couldn't recognize any of them and wasn't sure if they were perhaps based on newer players playing during the rebuild...
Until I ran smack into myself in the new castle barracks playing the Graal TCG with a.. bear-like fellow. I am amazed my NPC has been here for this long. Though the rebuild team typo'd the name. (It isn't displayed here, but you can look in on NPC matches and see the names there)

Unfortunately, it seems I've reached the end of the rebuilt Classic's content, so unless anyone has any requests, my screenshots will end here.

It's like Link to the Past
But online.

>> No.446047

>>445936

by default, it's a Zelda: A Link to the Past ripoff that managed to become an online experience. It can become much more than that with a proper team of scripters and the like, but the game pretty much died due to horrible management that expected a game that was mainly fleshed-out by unpaid, teenage amateur scripters to be viable in the long-run with a paid subscription.

There's unofficial free servers of the game but the community is pretty sparse these days. No more senseless player killing running rampant through level13.graal

My brother had a server called Graal 3000, if I recall correctly it got fairly popular

I was always kind of mad at him for it because we were just kids and it meant he was always hogging the computer

>> No.448378

YOUR brother made that ridiculously overhyped piece of crap?

I remember being online when he first announced it. He sent everyone a PM in case they turned off mass messages. He said "WHO KNOWS. MAYBE GRAAL 3000 WILL BECOME BIGGER THAN GRAAL ITSELF!!"

And all it was, was a bloated set of levels you could make in an MSpaint conversion program Stefan put out. Certain different colors would become different tiles and connect themselves.

Most of the levels in Graal 3000 were just BLANK. Purely green, undetailed levels. I wish I had a screencap of that worldmap, because that was so telling of what a farce it was.

So like. If you could stomp on your brother's foot for me, that would be great.

I remember even on the biggest servers, almost everybody in power was under 20. So that meant there were lots of drama-hungry kids as admin, and lots of extremely public whining and fighting among the staffers.

Damn, son. I haven't heard "GP" in aged. What did that stand for again? Graphics something? It was kind of a lower position, wasn't it?

I sort of remember playing a long time ago on the main server as some teenage girl staffer was having an absolute shitfit over some petty staffer drama that she blew entirely out of hand, and dragging EVERYBODY AND EVERYTHING in to it. Being about 12 or 13 at the time, I think I flatly told her to shut up and got reprimanded seriously for it.

The early versions actually let you go into the Golden Realm after collecting the four Graals, and after a short quest there, you got the Gold Sword. That was essentially beating the game.
It was later made impossible to open the Golden Gate even if you got the Graals because the quest was short, it sucked, and the lv4 sword was too overpowered. They wanted to completely redo the quest and offer a better reward, but it just never happened. Only the quests for the Graals themselves were revamped.

If I remember correctly, the 1.3 level pack should let you do this.

If you people want more info about old graal before it sucked google "The Graal Library" or "Graal files" for downloads, screenshots and other information. also search for and check out Graal Reborn and the Classic server there. you can even set up and host your own server if you want for free. Just be sure to avoid GraalOnline now, they will steal your money, ban you for no reason and they suck.

Graal was an awesome experience for the teenager I was, a game mostly made by and for teenagers, with a teenager playerbase. That was awesome. I don't know if such a thing will ever happen again in the gaming world and I sure hope graal will get into prosperity as the best fucking underground game there ever was. Sadly, stephane seems to believe that managing a game means beating it down to death until it becomes completely sterile. I'm pretty sure no one remembers 2ndwolf from back in the 2000s but that was me.
Graal is a surprisingly important part of my life and I feel a strong attachment to it. It's also one of the rare things I genuinely feel nostalgia about. I sure hope the graal reborn project will achieve reviving what graal was back in the days.
Thanks for bringing it up, if that game doesn't make it into prosperity I'll be a sad man lol.
