KACHO ON!

Let's keep this as /vr/ as possible to avoid complaints.

Are you currently playing any games featured in the challenges?

Which retro games have you completed in your FIRST sitting?

Which of Arino's challenged games is your favorite?

http://www.fujitv.co.jp/otn/gamecenter/index.html

The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse (Super Famicom) has been confirmed as the first challenge game for Season 17.

All of the Mega Man games through #8. Also, I bought Ninja Gaiden 2 right when it came out and wouldn't shut it off until I finished it. It took several hours. The further I got, the more I was determined not to shut it off. That experience bordered on not fun.

You found it. It obviously doesn't have them all, but dailymotion is probably your best bet right now. You can use a browser extension to pull individual episodes off of there in MP4 format without needing to convert. Most of them are roughly 350 MB in HQ. I like loading up a bunch onto a thumb drive and playing them on my big TV through its USB port. Its video player is pretty basic (MP4/AVI/WMV), but it upscales nicely.

That's part of the Japanese humor. It's like, for example, going to New York, hiring a taxi driver, and going through all these crazy hijinks- and it turns out the soft-spoken, dutiful and silent taxi driver who's been with you since you got off the plane is actually a nobel laureate, doctor, famous artist, and pop singer, but prefers his taxi because he can be his own boss and no one pays attention to him. He thinks of it like a vacation, almost.

There's a common undercurrent of 'the overqualified underling' in comedy, especially with how social class seperation occurs in Japan.

It's hard to explain but when on tv or movie set, time moves faster than normal during the shoot and is almost always fun, no matter how dull the material in question is.
The dullest things tend to be the set up, the clean up afterwards and the fatigue that often kicks in during brakes and the occasional excessive wait due to human/location/technical issues, but you could be filming paint drying for 13 hours and still have fun during the actual shoot.

>> No.401542

You work at the movies or something?

That would make me jelly as fuck. We have a movie-club at my college, and I'm director for the project at the moment. It is really fun during shooting, that's right.

I haven't done anything major and I'm not working in Hollywood or anything, but I've been on enough sets to know that these things tend to always stay the same.
And yeah, preparation anxiety is the worst. In fact it's the most difficult thing for everyone involved I think, certainly is for me. But once you're on the set and begin the shoot, it's quick to go away and the fun kicks in.

I haven't watched them all but ghosts'n goblins as well as the sequels. I also liked trying to play along with the quiz games.

Is the show getting more lax on these things or is it just a coincidence they picked three games not easily beaten in a single sitting?

From what I've read, it seems like a good deal of GCCX is scripted. Some of it is obvious (such as the Pinch Hitter in Kid Cool), but are Arino's reactions legit? This might be me, but I think he's a little too quick witted to compare an enemy he sees for 3 seconds to some Japanese pop musician.

>> No.418495

>>418446
I don't believe he's scripted, rather, directed and led along by the crew, but never actually told explicitely what to do.

A good crew uses their actors/participants and lets it be organic while still knowing what kind of footage they'll be able to capture. Its part of why they spend a lot of time trying to pick good games for Arino to play. Difficult games, or games with gameplay that might change up a lot or surprise someone are good games because it lets Arino be expressive.

You don't need scripting when you gather 12 hours of footage with a popular and skilled comedian.

Personally, it's not that those moments get me pumped up, it's more like they make it so overly dramatic, that I find it humorous.

It's not scripted in the way that Arino and his crew/staff rehearse every little thing that you see in an episode beforehand, but the quirks and characteristics are played up so that it is more entertaining.

OP here. This was my first time starting a GCCX thread, done on very short notice as the last thread was slipping away. If there are no objections, I’m happy to continue making them for the foreseeable future. The pace of /vr/ and popularity of the show make it fairly easy to monitor things without problems. I’ll keep an eye on the thread stats and will try to make each new thread within a couple hours of hitting 500 replies.

I’ve spruced up and tweaked the thread opener with the intention of covering the basics and including as many catalog search terms as possible. If we can stay organized and prevent duplicate threads, I’m confident that we’ll continue to be welcomed on /vr/. I’m open to any and all suggestions on what to include in the opener. Here’s my plan at the moment:

>official website plus recent news
With Season 17 underway, there should be new challenge games announced fairly regularly.

>discussion points
Having these near the top of the opener will help to keep the thread relevant to /vr/ and may pique the interest of newcomers to the show.

>where to find the show
I’ll mention the Dailymotion accounts and that new YouTube uploader (YT may or may not allow it to stay up). I’ll also add the link to the torrent thread >>>/t/555877

>a few notes about the DVD and the DS games
Not technically /vr/, I may stick these notes in the first reply.

I'm assuming that the "awkward discovery" phase that he goes through at the start of most games is by design. They want to get his reactions while he doesn't know what the hell is going on. He does kind of suck in plain platforming and action games, though. He often misses important jumps and wastes tons of ammo in many different action games by shooting all over the place. It's not rare for him to get stuck on a certain part of a level for over an hour.
I recently watched the Genji and the Heike Clans revenge and it was just absolutely ridiculous. I lost count of how many times they had to switch between two PC Engines and ADs trying to catch up whenever Arino missed a jump (ie. game over) or killed himself by running against a simple obstacle.

The greatest weapons he has are his ridiculous reserves of luck and patience. Puzzle is the only genre where he is legitimately good at.

Yeah, I thought they handled it pretty badly. You'd think _someone_ would have thought about just flying up, but no...

And in any case, even if they decided to skip the level, they should've just given him a password to the next level, not the last one.
And he gave up way too easily on Dracula. It's not like he's even that hard in the Japanese version. And I found it very strange that he seemingly had to start at the beginning of the stage after game overing on Dracula, because that does not happen in the Jap version which he was playing, only in the US version.

I also noticed that on the Genesis version of Ghouls 'N Ghosts he seemingly had to restart at the last checkpoint when dying on bosses, which IIRC does not happen in the Genesis version - only on the arcade version. However, that might just be a difference in the Jap version, if there is a separate one. I've only played the US version, and in that one you start at the bosses when you die after you get there.

Wow, never thought about that. Then again, I never used the sword much. I usually stick with the dagger or on the second playthrough, the bracelet. The bracelet is actually really good in regular GnG, but in the Genesis version it kinda sucks on Ohme (slug boss) because it has shorter range than it does in the arcade version, so it's best to just get the dagger for that boss - that way you can just stand at his edges and fire towards his hearts to kill him easily. I actually did manage to beat it using the bracelet though, after a shitload of attempts.

He actually beat Battletoads?
That's impressive!

Never played the Japanese version though. Maybe it was made easier? I think they made changes to the PAL version...
