Walking past some manchilds huddling around an LCD taking turns on what they called "Marry-o" I struck up a conversation with the only woman there.

"Oh, um, I really liked Myst!"

I've actually done this a few times I think. Not only video games but other geeky or niche stuff.
Sometimes I also hear people discussing something I know or like a lot but I stay away from their conversation because they're being ultra spergy about it and sometimes even speaking very loud for everyone to hear.

It also happens regularly with one of my friends in class. He would suddenly start talking about some of the games he's been playing over the week or some other lore bullshit he found out about his favorite games or new stuff coming out for the games he plays.
The worst thing is that I don't play the games he talks so much about nor even care about all that dumb shit but he always makes sure to try to shoehorn it into any conversation or simply start talking about it out of nowhere.

I don't mind talking about specific details if it's necessary, but during casual conversation if someone starts talking about something too technical or trivial to be interesting I ignore them and try to escape. One of my coworkers was nice but I ended up hating him because he was obsessed with the game Smite and would go in depth into the meta, even though it was obvious I didn't care. I just can't stand it when people put to much emphasis on the details and refuse to get to the point.

Dude, if you want to be the guy to lug a fucking CRT into a classroom for a shitty college club, be my guest.

Your options are a small, lighter CRT that defeats the purpose of gaming at a college gaming "club" because people can't watch over the players, or a fuck off heavy one with a screen large enough for more than 3 people to watch at a time.

If you can't deal with gaming on an LCD using an accurate emulator (for post 16-bit era, just deal with an LCD set to 4:3) for gaming in a social setting, you need to work on your social skills.

Sperg all you want at your dorm/apartment, but the point of going to a gaming club is to socialize about your interests, not to protect the purity of the medium.

I bet you'd actually trust the spergs there not to break your classic game systems too.

>> No.3781381

Whoops, meant to say that for post 16-bit, just bring the actual console and set the LCD to 4:3 mode. Emulation past SNES era tends to be buggy horseshit.

On emulators just set the aspect ratio in the emulator itself.

Eh, I agree about not getting too spergy about stuff at inappropriate times, but I do think there are times when, places where, and people with whom you can talk about whatever to whatever detail.

Going on and on about Japanese PC games in the middle of a history class, at work, or with a coworker who you hardly know outside of a work context is more likely to be irritating or make you seem to lack social skills than anything. But, at a club dedicated to discussing and playing old games, it seems like something perfectly acceptable to bring up. There's also the fact that one should gauge the other person's interest or knowledge level, and adjust whether you talk about the topic in a casual, obsessive, or even a more informative tone, or if the other person doesn't care, don't discuss it at all and find a new topic that interests both of you. I'd personally be all for someone explaining the intricacies of PC-98 gaming to me, but since I personally know nothing about it, I'd be lost if they started to ramble on about specifics without giving me a quick run down about the basics of the platform or the best kinds of games available. Similarly, I'd probably try to shutdown the conversation if they started to educate me while I was trying to finish some unrelated task. If I were at an old game club, though, I'd see no problem with them trying to fill me in on something out of the blue, as long as they adjusted their style after I told them that I lack much familiarity with PC-98 and won't yet be able to carry on a conversation about particular shmups that were made for it.

If someone at a gaming club tries to act conceited for not knowing about some piece of old game trivia, it'd seem like they're the one in the wrong place and not the other way around.

The people who are offended by old games being played on new TV's aren't really interested in games themselves to begin with. They like knowing about games and the Optimal 4chan Approved SCART Setup's.

Similarly, many audiophiles care more about sound systems than they do music. To them, music is a means to test a sound system. They spend more time on message boards discussing the minute details of DAC's and USB cables than listening to music.

Meanwhile Chad is having a blast listening to his favorite albums on his $50 Audio Technicas.

I'm quite sure that the people in the retro game club enjoy games far more than the cats around here who get stressed out at the thought of plugging their PlayStation in via composite cable. They just care about the game itself, not the hardware used to run it.

The -only- time I've had noticeable input lag was when I played vagrant story on my original model PS3.

I was unable to chain reliably. That being said, I still beat the game fairly easily.

Playing on a standard PS1 on a CRT the chaining was way easier. Even with my little PSone LCD display on it it worked fine

CRT's look better for really reasons that are hard to quantify in a youtube video or screenshots. You really have to see the difference.

CRT's are amazing. I have 3. Two are more for "display" around my games room, and the other one is my primary work horse since teh other 2 have smaller screens and only mono sound.

I think there's a middle ground here. Playing on new TV's isn't the end of the world and people shouldn't get asspained about it you are right. But CRTs and optimal SCART setups have actual measurable advantages over the other options, as opposed to audiophile gold plated cable raisers that do nothing.. When I hear people talk about old games they used to like and say things like "the graphics suck now even though I used to think it looked awesome" or "the controls are clunky this really aged poorly" or something along those lines, I wonder how many only think this way because they are playing on new TVs.

Like, don't they soft reboot it or something when they move to a new region? I don't watch it these days so I don't know if this is accurate or not, but something like that makes it seem like it would make it hard to get invested in it compared to something like, say, Dragon Ball that had hundreds of chapters/episodes that had a somewhat solid continuity from episode to episode.

Yeah.... I know this is an entertainment site about old games but a bit of real talk, I don't think they're your problem. But they sound like they're a symptom of a much bigger problem.

I love video games, but they can be bad. They give a sense of accomplishment from not really doing anything, but your brain doesn't always know that. So you'll find yourself seeking them out because it gives that boost of endorphins from accomplishment, but it's hollow. And when you look back you'll see that it hasn't added up to much.

It's entirely possible to play games and still have friends and family. It just takes balance. Going through life bitter will be horrible for you and unpleasant for everyone you interact with. You only get one go at this life, try not to waste it in misery.

Be the LEADER of the awkward loser gamma/delta male autists looking for friends. Trust me it's totally worth spending one day a month with them, the more the better. SOME of them will be cool guys you can have as an inner circle you hang out with other times. Also, even those supernerds will have sisters not to mention regular girls who notice your menagerie and assuming you guys are really as cool and normal looking as you're implying they'll wonder why someone like you is spending time with all those weirdos and come to the conclusion that you're a real nice guy helping the nerds improve their social skills who's confident enough to rock his nerdy hobbies. This even gives them something very obvious to approach you about. Remember that if you're in a large setting like college and are even half way normal looking there IS a girl who's interested in you, she just doesn't know how to let you know without risking embarrassment - ironically, the same reason you don't reveal much about yourself.

and if all else fails, one of your minions will probably have a girlfriend he constantly tells how great you are that you could steal

This doesn't change the point. The whole platform is largely memed by weebs alone. Because 99.99% of other people in US don't care about visual novels and don't speak Japanese, contrary to what some strongly believe.

I do understand that when you're waaay into retro hobby, you've long beaten every good game on every popular and not so popular console, you hunger for more. But do you seriously expect people to be like that in college? They've probably barely played all the classics yet.

It depends on the tv, I used to have a crt and led next to each other for retro and modern games. I messed about seeing what the ps2 was like on the led at one point and also used it to test consoles since it was easier to get behind. It had a noticable lag and sime games it really did ruin. If you played sonic it almost felt like he was stuck to the floor.

But currently I just have a megadrive hooked up to a small led and it's fine. The imput lag isn't noticable, it doesn't look as good but I can live with that if the games plays fine.

Well yeah I mean if OP really did his greentext he came off as a douchebag AT BEST. There's such a thing as context, even if you want to show off your knowledge. OP could have talked about SMB2J/Lost Levels/Vs.SMB or he probably could have started a pretty interesting conversation with those guys by bringing up Donkey Kong Picnic which is a pretty cringey topic on /vr/ but would most likely be fresh to them. Oppositely he might have even been able to inspire some discussion if he'd brought up upscaling delay and CRTs which is a much more cringey topic in real life than on /vr/ but MIGHT have made a decent conversation if approached correctly but to go directly to the most obscure topic he could think of is some ultimate tryhard shit and I half believe it to be bait although I also have no trouble believing there are plenty of guys on neo/vr/ that would do exactly that after skimming what they see as the most intense generals for a week or so.

I preach that life doesn't have to be shit and love is a powerful force that can help in that. If you want to move past depression and misery there are many ways, and if you ask for help you will find it's abundant because the overwhelming majority of people are loving and helpful.

But if you want to ignore all that, stick your head in the sand and call me a douche that's your decision. I don't mean to be harsh but you are literally choosing to be a loser because it's easy and doesn't require you to better yourself.

I wish it wasn't so, and I wish you wanted to help yourself for your own benefit as well as those around you, but I can't force that on you. So yes, in the end I will give you a little tough love and leave you be. Wallow in misery until you die if you want, I can't stop you. But at least understand what you are doing and own the decision you have made as pathetic as it is.

I think Pokemon Indigo League is a perfectly acceptable intro anime. My wife watched all of DBZ:Kai with me when she was pregnant. She doesn't like war which is imo the best anime genre and I've slowly, slowly been building her taste for horror but I haven't come up with an anime that's suitably mindfucking (which she likes) without being too terrifying for her. She also has a hard time focusing on subbed stuff. Sadly we just really don't have the time for even a 30-some episode series.

Tell me this Mr. Love Guru.

Nearly a year ago (this happened in March '16) I ate some bad food and my stomach got really fucked up. Had a horrible stomach ache for three days and was literally bed bound while it lasted. It passed but my stomach never really recovered. I'm now basically permanently fucking bloated to some degree (sometimes worse than others) and am constantly experiencing discomfort at the bare minimum and stomach aches are frequent. They can't find out what's wrong with me and are calling it IBS. Often get constipation too but it's not too bad.

A year ago today I was 15kg heavier and was muscular. I did have a problem with depression before I got ill but now I just feel like absolute shit. There is no cure for IBS; I'm going to be spending my entire life feeling like utter shit basically. Actually with post-infectious IBS there's a 50% chance that it will recover within 3-5 fucking years but I doubt I will be that lucky.

So yeah, I'm absolutely fucking doomed to lead a life of feeling like shit. What the hell is the point of living this crap? Don't give me that crap about allowing love to heal me or whatever. I have plenty of people that love me and I'm grateful, but honestly I wish nobody fucking did so that I could just kill myself and not hurt anyone. But here I am, utterly stuck and constantly in pain.

Idk. This life feels like total bullshit to me now. As I said, I did have a problem with depression before, but being like this is just the final fucking straw. Life is literally pain for me now, both mental and physical, and there's nothing I can fucking do about it. Fuck everything.

I'm not even the guy you're referring to anon, but yes you can.

For starters, I hate that you're going through that, man. I really do. I'm in a similar boat, believe it or not. Last July, I got this sharp, numbing pain that shot down the left side of my body. My face, head, arm, and leg all tingled and was numb and sore for several weeks. I didn't know what happened. I went to a chiropractor, thinking it was something spinal, and I wasn't better at all after 6 sessions. My problem apparently wasn't major, so I should've been better by then. I will admit, the sharp tingling and numbness did finally go away, but now this dull ache that dances around the left side of my head/face just lingers, and sometimes my arm and leg feels very heavy. It makes me feel lethargic and not wanting to really do anything. People at work have noticed it out of me lately in particular.

And that was last July. This problem still persists with me. The sensations vary, but I'll say at least half of each day, I feel weak, unmotivated, and drained due to whatever the hell this is. MRIs, CT scans, X-Rays all reveal nothing. I don't know what's wrong with me. But guess what? I enjoy life. I love video games, that's why I'm here. That's why you're here too. I too have people that love me. Friends, family, a girlfriend I have all that despite this shitty whatever-I-have. I don't have depression, but I work in mental health, so I know what it looks like and what it can do. Don't let it do that to you, man. You're better than that. Everyone is better than that. Live the life you want to live, and enjoy some damn video games.

Not to scare you away, because this does just that to most folks, but have you tried church? It can be very empowering and you'd be shocked at the strength you find there. God is good, if you let Him be. But if that's not your thing, that's fine. I just want you to know that you CAN do this and that you're better than some dumb IBS.

First, this is /vr/. Your talk is not really suited for here and you'd get better advice elsewhere. But, since you're asking, I can add my 2 cents.

Gurus will tell you that you can solve your pain in your mind. That's the usual guru talk. That's why they are called "gurus". They preach that if you just believe, you sure will be happy. You won't, you'll simply become a weirdo. Or in the worst case, sold snake oil.

Here's the only advice I can give. Try to abstract from mental stuff. Forget for a second about your depression, the feeling that you're doomed for your life, etc. It's the pain that causes these problems, not the other way round.

Then just work to eliminate the pain and its cause. Remember: your goal is not fighting depression. Your goal is fighting the cause of pain. Try and do exercise. Find diet that suits you most. If nothing works, seek professional help.

Don't focus on your mental stuff. It's just a placebo. Mental issues are always secondary. No pep talk is going to help you. No amount of courage will change anything, no peer support is going to matter. Don't think that it's about giving up or keeping "fighting". It's a routine, not a "fight". It's a real issue and should be treated with real methods, not belief.

Last but not least, remember that in fact no one gives a fuck if you get better or not. It's your body, and you work to feel physical relief. So forget seeking help online, that's the only real advice you can get.

For almost two years, massive weight loss, daily vomiting, practically bed ridden. I watched her faint face first on a brick patio and thought she was dead for a good 30 seconds. Not to mention two incomes shrunk to one and responsibilities usually shared could only be done by one of us. Five years later things are better, but far from what they once were.

To live is to suffer. Every bit of you is perfectly tuned to detect it, if it's not your bowels today it will be something else tomorrow. Love helps because it connects us and helps us all support each other. It helps make the suffering worthwhile.

I'm so sorry about your wife. I was nearly diagnosed with Crohn's. The gastro was wrong though. First had a faecal calprotectin test and my level was raised to around 420 (normal range 0-50) which indicated inflammation in the gut. He was surprised himself at the result. They followed up with a colonoscopy and he thought he saw mild inflammation in patches throughout the colon. However the biopsies revealed some minor inflammation in the caecum alone, and it was deemed indeterminate, not indicative of Crohn's. Recently had another calprotectin test and somehow my level's fallen to 238 so that's good. Also had a pill cam endoscopy on Feb 1st to look for inflammation in the small bowel, still waiting on the result. I don't think I have Crohn's though. No diarrhea, no blood in stool, no fever, joint pain, etc. I've had an endoscopy and contrast MRI as well (both normal). Wish you and your wife the very best.

Yeah, this is what I'll have to go on, apparently it helps 80% of IBS patients. The diet fucking sucks but whatever. If it takes the chronic bloating and pain away I'm smiling. The thing is my doctor isn't done with tests yet (btw this has been going since July, NHS is so slow) and he doesn't want me to start on the diet until after he's done.

I don't get the low fodmaps diet though. I read that it's not supposed to be a long term solution because it ends up killing off "good bacteria" in your gut because of the missing nutrition that no longer feeds them. So then what's the point? Do you just go on this diet for weeks at a time to feel better, then start eating normally briefly again and go back to shit for a few days just so your "good bacteria" don't die? My gastro is talking about hooking me up with a dietician, really can't fucking wait. The very best case scenario is that they actually find (treatable) parasites in the recent blood test they took and give me some shit to zap it out of my fucking system. What a shite year it's been.

Thanks, it is what it is. As things go Crohn's is pretty shitty but at least manageable. It made for some rough years but I think getting through struggles is what life is about. Pain, especially chronic pain can seriously fuck with you and drive you literally mad. That's why I talk about the power of love, it can make dealing with life's inevitable suffering a little easier. That doesn't only mean romantic love though, all forms can help.

The other is meaning. Finding whatever it is in life you find truly meaningful and work towards that. When you're engaged in something you find truly meaningful the suffering of existence seems less important. What that is for you though is only something you can find.

As for Fodmaps, I think it's a case by case basis. If you were normally able to digest those foods and your condition is mild then it might be a case of staying off them until you recover and should be able to handle them again so you'd want to be careful to keep those bacteria around.

In my wife's case most of the trigger foods were things she never digested well and her mother is very similar so it could be she never had a good colony of the right kind of bacteria for them in the first place. So even if she does recover a lot more the things she can eat will still be limited.

>tfw you will never be married/have a significant other whom you love and who loves you to face the world together with.

I know most anons shit on marriage and relationships in general but... Fuck does it make me jelly sometimes.

I sincerely doubt I'll ever get my shit together enough to actually be with someone, christ, I haven't even had a girlfriend in... going on eleven years.

Guess I'll just have to learn to look forward to struggling and dying alone.

I don't think I'll ever truly experience the love of a woman.

I wish I was dead.

Now that I have IBS I also feel that no woman will ever truly love me. Women liked me before because I was strong and had an outgoing personality (before I got depressed anyway). I'll never be able to be that guy I used to be. I can't party all night anymore and don't even want to. I'm not ripped anymore, just weak and shitty. It's hard to even be positive about anything when you're constantly in fucking pain.

I think a guy can still love a woman if she's ill, but it's hard for a woman to love an ill man. A man is supposed to be strong. Also it's one thing to have a significant other before getting ill and having that person stay with you than it is to having someone truly fall in love with you after you've gotten sick. No girl is going to want to spend her life with someone who's constantly in pain. I wish I just got cancer instead so that I could just fucking die and get this bullshit over with instead of spending the entire rest of my existence in a pitiful state like this. I fucking hate everything.

Not that everyone doesn't like to look at attractive people, but women in general care far more about self confidence, honesty and strength of character than physical strength. That's why I encourage you to step up and stop wallowing.

What makes you unattractive isn't that your bowels are bloaty and uncomfortable, it's that you let them ruin your life. If you are open and honest about your struggles but show that you handle them like a champ and persevere despite pain that actually makes you more attractive than someone who appears to not be struggling at all.

Everyone knows on an instinctual level that bad shit is around the corner. What makes someone attractive isn't that they've been lucky enough to have avoided adversity so far, or that they can hide it really well. What makes them attractive is how they deal with the adversity they've faced already.

You're right that you will never be that guy again, but you have the opportunity to be something better. It's not going to be easy, because life isn't easy. But that's the point. Do you let the shit that happens to you strengthen you or do you use it as an excuse to give up?

It's a decision no one can make except you, but I highly recommend strength.

This is why I don't really talk about video games with people irl. Playing with people is fun, but unless you are into the exact same shit to the exact same intensity as someone else, the conversation is going to be mind numbingly boring for a least 1 person involved. At least on the internet you can congregate with people who want to talk about exactly what you want to talk about.

I'm not really ashamed of being a "gamer", the problem is that I fucking hate just about every "gamer" I meet because video game culture is fucking retarded.

Throw in the fact that there's tens of thousands of games that someone could be interested in at any given point in time, and the fact that unless I have played said game long enough to form an opinion on it I will not give one fuck what they have to say, I just avoiding taking about games unless I'm actually playing a video game with a friend at that moment.

Even then it's iffy. One of my friends just bought csgo the other day and it was the first time he'd ever played a counter strike. I played with him for a few hours and kind of showed him the ropes. A week later he had like 100 hours in the game and was totally obsessed, and wanted to have in depth conversations with me about bullet spread and routes through Dust 2. Kind of hard to tell him that although I like the game, I don't give a flying fuck about all that bullshit

I was a kid when those systems were relevant and considered myself a seasoned gamer but I never even knew anyone with a Saturn (not owned one myself) and the only people I knew who had a Dreamcast played nothing but the 2k sports games and sanic adventure.

I sought those systems out myself when I got older since I got really into shmups, so I'm not surprised or offended at all when into shmups tell someone about the Saturn and they've never actually laid eyes on one before.
