Previous thread >>3751086
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

I'm getting ghost trails on my Toshiba now. The door opening animation in RE3 Nemesis for example leaves a very noticeable trail when it swings open. I only really notice it when the background is black like that. What is happening here exactly and what can be done about? It's not that distracting because I only notice it when something is against a black screen (sometime it actually looks really neat, like the when petals falling during Otogi loading screens) but i wanna be sure this isn't indicating the death of my set.

The easiest and cheapest way to see for yourself is using a PS2's component output with a PS1 game. Pic very much related. Past that, like >>3774070 said you'll need to invest in RetrovisionHD's component cables for SNES/Genesis (And soon to be Saturn, NGAES, and PS1) or look into getting SCART cables and a SCART to Component transcoder. My two flatscreens have very minor geometry problems. With one I know it's due to the front of the glass being flat but the inside still being a curved tube, with the other I'm not sure what it is but it has a small bow in the top.

You absolutely can. You can use a stand-alone transcoder to convert RGB to YPbPr and send that to the set. A company called HD Retrovision has component cables for the SNES and Genesis that have built-in transcoders. You can hook up a PS2 to the set over component and easily play PS1 games on it with component/RGB quality picture.

>>3774104
>Then how did vertically flat Trinitrons exist?
Distance from the gun is still equal across the screen as it draws, so you don't run into issues. It's the flattening on a horizontal plane that causes issues.

>>3774145
>you'll need to invest in RetrovisionHD's component cables for SNES/Genesis
If you're only looking for one or maybe two consoles, that is the better way to go, but anymore than that and getting a Shinybow transcoder and decent SCART cables gives you more versatility, and for about the same price, if not less if you end up using more consoles with it.

>>3774251
So long as it's within the limits of the monitor's horizontal and vertical frequency limits, you should be safe, ignoring using stupidly low refresh rates. That recommended resolution is just what they've deemed as working best with that monitor, and more specifically, what the tube should be able to accurately resolve.

An example is, I can run my Megaview(4:3 monitor, 85khz horizontal limit) at 1080p, 16:9 and everything, but it looks like shit for anything requiring readability of text or very fine detail. 1792x1344 is also doable, for whatever reason, but just looks like garbage in general; The max that is decent for general use is 1152x864, or 1024x768 if you're looking for something a slight bit more standard.

I finished my NESRGB mod last month and did a little write-up about it here: >>3774518

Here's today's pickup, Duck Tales running on it. My camera is crappy and so it looks a little blown out here, but it's very sharp and the colors are excellent. I'm very happy with the image quality on my 32" Trinitron TV over component cables. Absolutely no flicker during scrolling screens in games like Dragon Quest and Zelda 2, which were among the worst offenders with composite.

Eventually I'm going to get a FrameMeister although the Trinitron has been serving me well in the meantime. I've got a 1chip SNES on the way too, and while I'm not exactly expecting a night and day difference from my old SNES I figured I should jump on the bandwagon before the eBay price goes up to $200 or something outrageous.

Fully curved "goldfish bowl" ones don't. Their screens are spherical sections and therefore identical distance from the gun at all points on their surface.

Trinitrons are cylindrical section. They are further away at the top and bottom versus the sides.

It's fairly simple to design a circuit to adjust the focus and intensity as the image is built up from top to bottom. Another thing entirely to do it as the beam scans across each horizontal line. That requires technology which was only at a level affordable to consumers by the mid-90s.

How do I plug in component on my Samsung TV?

I am planning to finally bite the bullet and buy an HD RetroVision component cable for my Super Famicom and upgrade from S-Video.

I am also planning on buying component cables for my Wii, PS2, PSP Go and DVD player.

But my Samsung CRT inputs look like this and only have five inputs for component rather than three which usually applies to the cables themselves.

How do plug in the component cables and still have audio output.

If I can't do it, then I will buy a 5.1 surround system for my retro CRT setup.

I have a high-res, high-refresh CRT monitor that I'd like to use for active-shutter 3D. One issue I've read, though, is that because of phosphor decay, "ghosting" can be a problem on CRTs (where the left-eye image isn't gone yet when the right-eye image is being drawn). One way I can think of solving this would be to use some sort of device between the input signal and the monitor to trick the monitor into hesitating longer before drawing each frame (in technical terms, increasing the vertical blanking time).

Basically, how impossible would it be to use a raspberry pi to convert a 100 Hz signal (100 frames per second, drawn the usual way) into a "160 Hz" signal (still 100 frames per second, but drawn faster to leave more time for blanking between frames)? Obviously it would add some input lag, but I wouldn't mind that. I'm just curious if my idea is too complicated/fundamentally retarded for me to pay someone a few hundred dollars to put together some day.

my other idea was to convert a 100 Hz signal into a 200 Hz signal with a raspberry pi, with black frames inserted between each actual frame to leave more time for phosphor decay. Would this be dramatically easier to do?

It'll probably work. Some graphics cards with s-video out came with an s-video to composite adapter just for that reason.

Note that this is not ideal for 240p games as s-video from PCs will only output 480i signals. Getting real 240p from a PC requires a lot more effort and it's just not worth it unless you're connecting to a display with RGB.

Funny enough I used an s-video to composite adapter backwards (composite from NES into the adapter, plugged into s-video port of tv) and it displayed as a grayscale image, the tv couldn't figure out the chroma encoding through the adapter backwards.

Finally found someone with a Sony Trinitron 24" WEGA and just finished setting it up. Are there any sound or video options I should use to get the best quality out of my games? Also I found out it has a headphone jack which I thought was pretty neat.

In the standard menu, make sure it's either on standard or pro mode
Lower the sharpness setting until is seems about neutral
Turn off VM/Velocity Modulation, or at the very least set it to low.

Lower the brightness and picture/contrast setting to what seems reasonable to extend the life of the tube.

Anything more than that would be service menu adjustments, and those would all be on a situational basis on what little things would need tweaked.

That said, looks good. That a metroid chilling on the corner?

Trinitron: Sony's aperture grille based CRTs. Can apply to anything ranging from one of their first models in the late 60s all the way to the flat A-Series BVMs of the late 00's.

WEGA: Branding applied to certain portions of Sony's various displays from the first half of the 00s. In context, usually referring to Sony's flat faced CRT TVs from the very late 90s through to the mid 00s. More accurate term for such sets is "FD Trinitron", but that also applies to their flat PC CRTs from that time, including the FW900, and the above

tl;dr: Trinitron= Sony CRT(there are exceptions)
WEGA = Flat Trinitron (TV)

It actually does make a huge difference, especially for scrolling. On composite there is a lot of blurriness and color bleed and the individual pixels are much harder to discern. During scrolling on a composite image there is a significant amount of "shimmering" which is especially noticeable on things like the grass in Zelda 2's overworld.

So, I just got a Sampo Alpha Scan 712 for free, I know its probably not top gear equipment but I just wanted to try a CRT and this one has VGA output.
The problem I have now is that when I turn it on without being connected to the pc it displays image altough apparently the buttons do not work and I cant look into the options.
But when I do connect it to my computer through the VGA output it turns a green light, it makes a ''clunk'' sound and then it becmoes an orange light and it doesnt display image at all.

What is the problem here? me having windows 10? me having a videocard from 2013 or something else?

I have two problems with my 36' CRT.

The first problem probably has an easy solution. I noticed when loading up darkstalkers on my PS2 via component that for some reason the picture is pushed to the right, allowing me to see the end of the image on the left side as well as top right. See picture.

If I boot up melee on my wii through component I have no such issue. I'll post a follow up picture showing how the entire screen is nicely filled.

I went into my ps2 settings and played around with full size picture but eventually just settled for 4:3. I haven't tested this out with PS2 games because I'm scared of my second problem.

Problem #2 is that something strange is happening to my CRT. I was the anon who posted on here a week or so ago complaining that I couldn't get perfect geometry out of my crt, but I got some pretty good geometry after fiddling with the service menu.

After I saw the problem with darkstalkers I decided to boot up 240p test suite and see how my geometry looked. I was in shock when I saw that it was again completely messed around to the point where it looked as if I never touched the service menu.

I was confused by this but figured I would just try and shoot for another good looking grid. 30 minutes later and I accomplished satisfaction. The grid surprisingly looked a little better than what I accomplished weeks ago. I was happy, I saved my changes and then turned off my CRT.

Upon turning my CRT back on I was immediately concerned. The usual strong sound of my CRT degaussing was no more. I waited a minute or so and tried the powering on process again. It sounded like a sped up version of what I would normally hear.

I guess my question is did I somehow hurt my crt by going into the service menu and maybe changing a setting too much? I want to preserve this tv for as long as I can and I'm worried now that something terrible is happening to it. I'm scared by the weak degauss and self changing of its own geometry!

Hey guys. How do I get 480p on my CRT?
I'm told it supports 480p by the previous owner, and he mentioned something about a component to VGA transcoder, and Mayflash. No idea what these are.

My plan is to get a nintendo wii and and maybe even an xbox hooked up to do 480p, but I assume I'll need special cables and shit to do so. Here's a picture of the inputs available to me on the back of my CRT.

Take another look at the picture. On the bottom half there are plenty of RGB inputs. They're BNC but they're still RGB. Which is why I'd need the cables I talked about to actually get a ps2 or wii hooked up.

if your monitor supports it, you will need to send R, G, B and H/V sync signals to your monitor, it doesn't look like it supports Y/Pb/Pr signals so it's going to be a little more complicated.

Your monitor needs to support 31khz signals, meaning if it's a pro monitor like it seems, it needs to be multiformat.

but as for figuring out if it can actually output 480p, how can I? I'm pretty sure it does 31Khz but i've no idea if its a 'multiformat' or not.

reason for asking is I want to hook up a ps2, wii and maybe some other consoles to it, but only if it can natively do 480p, othrwise I'll just keep using it for older stuff. I saw a post in a thread that using a ps3 on it can actually damage the monitor. so yeah. idunno.

Using a PS3 on it won't damage anything. If it doesn't accept the signal, and there's no way to change the accepted signal in your monitors controls, it's just not a 31khz monitor, therefore cannot accept 480p signals. I have an Ikegami htm-2050R which supports up to 1080i, and was disappointed to find that it can do 1080i, 1080p24, 720p60, 480i, and whatever PAL shit is, but it doesn't do 480p. I was a little baffled, but I support 480p isn't exactly a common production standard - and these monitors were used for film production, while 480p is more reserved for the DVD side of things.

If you send a 31khz signal to it, and it's all tiled/scrolling/fucked up in general, then your set can only do 480i. Honestly, 480i is one of the better ways to play PS2, since very few games even support 480p, and an rgb signal on ps2 is higher quality than its y/pb/pr signal.

Picked up a 34" Sony Trinitron, 1996 vintage, excellent condition today, for free.

Works amazing but I still wanted to open it up to clean the dust out and it was so bad that it's now turned in to a full disassembly job.

Anyways, all components look great except for the tuner circuits and this IC protective cover. Just wondering if this is something that other people commonly see on their CRTs or if it could be a symptom of some other problem?

Nintendo did in fact make s-video cables, but as such they're hard to come by and usually run $30 online. I saw some guy on ebay i think in sweden who makes really good looking custom svid cables that look well made for around $20. Otherwise, your best bet is buying any s-video cable without a composite cable (The yellow rca input) on it, as typically they're cheaply made and have interference, and in some cases the s-video is just a re-wired composite signal. Also avoid retro-bit and they're garbage.

I want to buy this Panasonic PVM. It's a model BT-H1350Y, and the main problems I have with it is that it only has mono sound and it's only 13" for the screen size.
The guy selling it wants $190 for it plus $36 for shipping (he's gonna send it in a flight case so it probably will be fine in the transit), but I'm not sure if the cost is worth it considering the downsides. Then again I'm probably never gonna find a decent PVM like this ever again.

>> No.3782158

>the main problems I have with it is that it only has mono sound and it's only 13" for the screen size.
99% of Professional Monitors are going to have Mono Audio or No Audio at all. The only ones that go against this are the NEC/Mitsu (and other assorted) Presentation Monitors, and the Pro-Feel like PVMs like the 2030 that come with -Optional- Speakers that clip on to the sides. If you're getting yourself an nice RGB monitor to play on, you really should invest at least a few dollars in a semi-decent audio setup to go with it. A little lepai 2020 amp and a pair of bookshelf speakers would go quite nicely with a 13 inch model like that.

Size is a personal taste thing. Some people prefer small monitors, and they do make for nice desk setups. Really something you have to decide for yourself.

That said, I've been staring at the same monitor for like a week+ now debating on whether to toss a low ball at them and see if it sticks. Not saying I'm gonna swipe it out from under you, but it is quite nice looking monitor and that flight case is a real bonus on having it shipped.

The only thing I didn't touch on was the price of the thing, since that's a sort of relative "Is it worth it to you?" sort of thing. $225 shipped is more than I'd be willing to pay for, and that's a lower price(due to shipping) than what it was quoting me.

Personally, I'd be happy with $150 or so shipped, if only because of the flight case which could possibly be flipped after arrival. But what they deem an acceptable price could be entirely different.

What else is there to answer?

Really though you should try avoiding online sellers and shippers anyways, most of these outlets are going to have a large hike to them and you're going to risk damage to the thing no matter what. >>3782120
If you're using a couch set up where you sit at least 3 feet away from your TV, replacing it with a 13"er may not be the best idea. These sets really shine up close and personal, so whether you're using composite, svideo, or RGB won't matter because you'll have a hard time seeing it. I'd stick with a 24" consumer set over a 13" pvm any day. They're optimal for desk set ups so if it's feasible for you to be within close range of your monitor, spring on it if you can afford it.

Help me out

I just got this in the mail. I don't have any BNCs right now so I can't hook anything up until Wednesday. I turned it on and though it powers up, the screen doesn't light up with a no sync message or any color. Is this normal if nothing is plugged into it?

>> No.3783632

The upper portion of the screen on my Trinitron seems blurrier than the rest of the image.
Also there is a bit of distortion on the image near the sides while scrolling, like a lens effect. Is it because the TV is flat screen and the NES I'm testing is designed for displays with curvature? I don't know anything about CRTs.

Are there settings that could help me or is the TV just a dud? I've looked in the service menu and adjusted a few things but I figured I should ask.

Does it degauss?
>BONGGGGGGG

Turn the lights off and see if it gets any lighter at all when switched on. Press the menu button too, that should work with no inputs connected.

If no luck with all of these it's probably deader than disco for all intents and purposes.

Don't be grumpy. I resell monitors locally in NE Florida. 5 inchers go for between 20 and 30, 8 inchers for 40 to 50 and 14 inchers from 100 to 130. I don't often sell anything bigger, but have sold a single 20L5 for around 200 about two years ago. The kid I sold at 14M2 to in St. Augustine last month for $120 was so fucking elated, he nearly cried in his beat-up car as he drove off. It all depends on where you live and how much you value these sets.

I remember buying my first 20L5 for $60 + 60 shipping in 2012. I felt like had ascended to another level of existence. Having disposable income is amazing.

I got my 1-Chip SNES in the mail on Monday. It was pretty dirty, smelled of second-hand smoke and needed a new AC adapter plate. I took it apart, washed all the plastic and buffed away a bunch of black streaks and various stains. Thankfully there is no yellowing plastic on it and it cleaned up really well. I swapped out the AC adapter plate for the one from my original SNES (I'll buy a new plate eventually for my old SNES, but that unit is pretty ugly due to a botched retrobrite job unfortunately). The broken AC plate works but I wouldn't trust it long-term.

I'll be taking some game screenshots on my Trinitron TV soon. I'm quite pleased with how it looks compared to my old unit. I went back and forth between several games and the old SNES definitely looks softer and blurrier compared to the 1-Chip, though that would be kind of hard for me to catch with photos and probably isn't worth it.

I'm at my wit's end. A few months ago, I got myself a PVM at a decent price. Setting it up had its problems, most of which being the cheap-ass cables I had gotten for it. I later "upgraded" to better cables, but a certain problem still exists.

No matter what I do, I can't get rid of this ghost image. It's basically a faint image of whatever's connected to the monitor, but to the right of where the actual object is. It's particularly noticeable on lighter backgrounds.

I need help. I can't just live with it, it drives me up the wall. Seriously considering giving up, otherwise. I'm starting to believe it's a problem well beyond the abilities of an amateur like myself.

You can test them with any simple millimeter set to measure resistance in ohms. Just put one probe on the central pin and the other on the outer collar. A short circuit i.e no resistance will usually cause the meter to beep.

From the sounds of what you've described it could well be a case of signal reflectance causing the ghosting most likely caused by faulty termination.

If you got them from Retro Console Accessories I'm pretty sure she properly wires them up with resistors and capacitors. I've heard tell that the UK seller doesn't bother with one or the other (probably the capacitors).

Either way you're probably right that it's highly unlikely for brand new terminators to all be dodgy. I'd start concentrating on the cabling at this point. Did you mention it was PS2 and SNES which were affected or was that someone else?

be sure to check if it's really wired for c-sync.
you should open the plug and see how grounds are wired, idealy you want all grounds connected to each other, even though it can work with one ground wire (usually composite ground or screening braid).
also, if you have a pvm you should not need terminators, only bvms need them.

What you can do on PS2, rather than faffing around with SCART, is use a component cable for the red blue and green lines (make sure you leave the console set for RGB and the monitor too, with sync set to external) then get a guncon composite breakout box and run the composite from that to your monitor. Does that make sense?

It's even easier on an early model PS1 as you can run the composite straight from the console's rca jack, you can even internally mod it so that jack carries raw sync straight from the CXA1645 encoder. That's what I plan on doing to mine despite living in the land where 21pin connectors flow like wine (UK).

This would be a huge pain in a number of ways. I'd have to get behind my monitor and disconnect the scart to BNC adapter, then plug in the RCA to BNC I have, then go behind my HDTV and disconnect my component cable so I can connect it to my monitor.

But it might be worth doing just to see if cables really are the problem. My component cable already has a separate sync connector, it's one of those shitty third party cables for multiple consoles. Would that even work?

It was a huge pain, but I'm reporting back after connecting my Wii to the monitor via Component. It's much, much cleaner than what I had been seeing on my PS2 and SNES.

I guess that means it's the cables, but what the fuck do I even do here.

Both my scart cables are from retro console accessories. What are the odds of both of them being fucked up?

Or is the scart to bnc adapter to blame? Should I get a new one?

Also, since I had my Wii hooked up anyways, I decided to check the grid pattern in the 240p set-up. The "regular" one looks absolutely fucked, with some kind of tilting towards the bottom. 224p grid looks normal. Does this happen a lot, and if not, how do I fix this shit?

Hey /crt/. I need a hand.

So I live in a pretty small flat and I can't bring my CRT TV and consoles from my parent's house with me because there's no room. I do have space for my CRT monitor, a Dell P990. Thing is it only accepts 31Khz and above.

So I want to opt for emulation, but the thing is I'm very sensitive to input lag. What I want to do is link up a Wii with emulators via VGA to this monitor and buy a wired controller.

I'm going to get a gamecube to Snes controller adapter and use that to minimise lag. My questions are; How lag free is Wii emulation? Will I be able to complete Lost Levels without much issue for example?
I'd also like to know if I can force the emulators on the Wii to always output at 480p. I don't mind a little internal upscaling if it's lag-free.

Thanks in advance.

IKEGAMI SOON, STALKER!

As in I have it in my garage now and will try to take some photos tomorrow or the day after. However, I have a much more pressing matter to attend to...

Fellow anonymous CRT fags, I come to you with a full storage unit. I recently won 3x 5041Qs, 12x 8 inchers (probably 8041s or 42s, maybe 44s or 45s if I'm lucky), 4x 13 inchers (1351Qs apparently, never had one of these before) and 7x 14 inchers (14M2Us probably). I won't know all the exact models until they arrive here in Jacksonville. They'll be added to my current backstock of 3x PVM-9L2 (has S-Video, needs an option card for RGB), 1x 8041Q and 2x 8042Q.

I also have some RGB signal distribution hardware (Extron, Folsom, etc. switchers and distribution amps) to clear out. Depending on the results of another event, I may have two or three more Extron Crosspoints to eliminate.

My question to you is: would you rather me set up an ecommerce site to sell this shit or should I just make a pastebin list and handle everything via email?

The best one is the best one you can get that works. If price and time aren't a problem then viewsonic p225f or sony gdm-fw900.

It's not a very good pic since it's from my phone but that's what 1920x1440 looks like on my 915FT+. I much prefer 2048x1536 or 2304x1728 if I'm going to be running a high resolution ingame. A lot of modern games hate 4:3 and use anamorphic widescreen when you have a 4:3 display. So good luck with that!

In terms of pure specs and the like?

Sony GDM-C520K/GDM-F520(Equal Specs in terms of resolution, but C is/was Sony's "Artisan" class monitor for color reference/grading.)
Mitsubishi 2070SB/NEC FP2141SB/Dell-HP-Compaq P1230/LaCie Electron Blue IV(Same exact monitors, just rebadged, Mitsu version had option for calibrations hardware similar to the Sony Artisan, not sure if the others support it.)
IIyama Pro514

All those are Trinitrons(Sony, obviously) or Diamondtrons(Everything else) and the latter of which are all using the same exact tube, with the Iiyama apparently having ever so slightly high end backing hardware(142khz Hori refresh vs 140). Wouldn't surprise me if the F520 used the same tube as the C model as well, just without support for the calibration hardware.

Eizo's F980 is the comparable shadowmask to all these, with a dot pitch that is ever so slightly lower (better) than the above, but is well into the realm of diminishing returns at this point.

There's also Barco's stuff, but that's focusing purely on color grading and doesn't hit nearly as high resolutions as any of the above, all of feature 135khz or higher horizontal refresh rates.

Really hoping to eventually get a response on a pair of HP P1230s that have been posted to the local craigslest repeatedly.

If it matters, I'm running Windows 10 and my method is to make sure Nvidia control panel and the display settings window is closed, unplug the monitor from my GPU, attached the DVI adapter to the VGA cable, wait for the sound that indicates it was detected, then plug the DVI adapter into my GPU, then I open the display settings window and hit detect. That works most of the time but it can require a few tries.

As for CRU, I've tried it and it simply wont work. EDID seems to override anything I try to set past 1880x1440. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

>>3791158
I've heard that removing pin 6 or 7 on a DVI adapter can lead to no image at all. I only have two VGA cables of appropriate length and two DVI-VGA adapters and I'm kind of hesitant to be doing stuff like this to them. Are you positive that it will work in Windows 10?

Just curious, does the Sony BVM-D32E1WU play well with light guns?

My Life in Gaming said something about light guns not working well with HD CRTs, but I just think they are referring to consumer TVs and not PVMs, but I am still worried that this particular BVM won't support light guns.

Can anyone tell me if light guns are supported in this particular TV.

>> No.3793140

>>3793028
>this particular TV
No Tuner, No TV. It's a monitor.

Light Guns don't work with HD CRTs because what they're displaying is not actually in sync(in terms of timing) with what is being fed by what ever console you may be using; i.e input delay problems.

(Multiformat) BVMs don't have this issue because they properly support the various resolutions being output by different sources rather than upscaling/processing them in order to display them. In this regard, they'd be comparable to any SD CRT or Computer monitor: What you feed in is what comes out on the other side.

tl;dr D32E1WU should have absolutely no issues with light guns at all, be it a Zapper, Super Scope, Virtua Gun, GunCon or otherwise.

xbox always does 480p at least unless the application states otherwise. I've done very intimate xbox modding for about two years now and have a very strong grasp on the ins and outs of the software and hardware, only way to get 480i out of it is with composite, s-video, or scart. You need a 480p display at least for a good experience.

You could in theory force every application to run in 480i mode, but this would require a good amount of work on changing resolution headers in every .xbe file (some applications do a post-launch check and may override it on a hardware level - meaning you're shit outta luck) - Most interfaces force everything into at least 480p with no regard for 480i.

>>3793140
in other words, pretty much every pro crt (have yet to see an exception) does everything analog in terms of how it displays that picture, so there's no processing to fuck things up - the root of many problems retro/arcade gaming related.

>>3793150

If nothing else, there's the PVM-20M7MDE. Pretty sure it's using the same exact tube as the 20M2(600TVL), but supports additionally supports 480p(not sure about anything else). 15khz inputs are accepted but I believe they're line doubled; 480p is apparently lag-less.

M7 was probably very late in production, wasn't it? Still if you're getting a pro monitor from almost any brand you're fairly safe in assuming it's purely analog.

I'm adding a CRT section to Perplexitees to sell my collection on monitors. Will post a link later when it's done. Going to accept PayPal and Stripe eventually; hopefully those two cover pretty much everyone's needs. Will list other RGB hardware there too.

Some monitors will have detailed histories. For example, my workplace just decommissioned two PVM 14L5s. They've been running 24/7 as on-air monitors for at least the two years I've been working here. Obviously they've seen better days, but don't have any obvious problems (no burn-in, specifically). They're probably still worth a pretty penny to the right people.

There may be physical adjuster on the deflection board then.

Be aware though that FD Trinitrons often have incorrectible geometry issues which are linked to their less than ideal design and manufacturing compromises. Don't get too hung up on perfection or you'll send yourself potty...

I have a crt problem.

I have 4 of them, one Phillips Magnavox pictured here, 2 20 inch orion's and a 20 inch goldstar that all work.

I have a feeling I should just trash them because they are all coaxial only, and I can't find anyone who still likes CRTV's, but they work great and I do connect a messed up snes to the phillips and it looks great to me.

Should I just buy some coax to rgb or something and actually use them, or are they somewhat sellable, maybe for someones arcade project?

No offense intended, coax only consumer sets are worthless. You can use adapters and converters to feed other signals into a coax port but it'll only ever give you coax quality. A crt is only as good as its inputs, and for retro gaming coax is literally the worst.

You don't have to trash em, but once you start using high-end crts and s-video/component/RGB connections you won't want to mess with budget-quality Goldstars and Orions ever again.

They can probably be converted for RGB. Either directly into the neckboard with appropriate attention paid to the signal levels, or through the jungle IC if they have some sort of overlaid OSD.

Not saying it's worth doing, of course. Just that it's feasible.
