I played the strip mahjong games for Windows. Direct from Gainax, a crossover with a few of their franchises. I was amused with Asuka getting jealous that Nadia was pretty sexually aggressive with Shinji.

I also played on PC the first Iron Maiden Girlfriend visual novel. Story was nice featuring a new character named Kirishima Mana, who was also sexually aggressive with Ikari, but sadly she was portrayed by the typical Hayashibara energy. I didn't experience the newer version that was on PS2 which had new endings such as Kirishima having a one night stand with Shinji before running away or the one where they do it in a love hotel then both decide to leave Tokyo-3. I haven't played many visual novels, and they really aren't my thing, but this game was okay.

In fact Evangelion had trouble getting their first sponsors, since the mecha designs didn't convince toy makers. SEGA was the first Evangelion sponsor, that's why there's so many Saturn games. But Sega also did trading cards and even toys (the first Evangelion toys were made by Sega).
Evangelion then took off in popularity and Ban Dai and the rest jumped the bandwagon.

You should watch Evangelion, regardless.
I understand the hype and the crazy fanbase surrounding it might scare people away, but it's worth it.

Not my pic, but here's a decent one. Although it doesn't make it complete justice.
The body is made of actual rubber, and building the kit is quite interesting, you build the skeleton first (all the inside articulations), then you have to stuff them, part by part, inside the skin. The model is articulated but you can't see the seaparation (only the feet are made of plastic, and the claws).

Not him but only 1 of these is actually a proper VN, the one in upper left, Girlfriend of Steel (which was consireded THE Evangelion game back in the day, mainly because of how Mana Kirishima got popular with fans, populairty which later faded away as Evangelion fanbase expanded with new generations that never knew this games existed. Also, during the 90s there was no translation patches, though I might remember transcriptions in english, maybe published in geocities webs and what not.
upper right and bottom left are both Saturn games, haven't had the chance to play them yet but I think they're a mix of strategy/rpg battles with adventure/VN parts, maybe some mini-games thrown in as well.
Those are Sega's own Evangelion games, and actually the first Saturn game was the first Evangelion video game ever made. The main attraction are the 3D modeled Evas, which in all honesty don't look as great, but in 1996, seeing a 3D Evangelion must have been quite something (at least until 1999 when Eva64 released).
The second one on Saturn presents a new character called Megumi who ends up revealed to be an angel.
Megumi was never popular for some reason, or at least I don't ever remember seeing her back in the day, compared to Mana who was everywhere in merchandising, art books and what not.
I wonder if 2nd Impression inspired the idea of Girlfriend of Steel. Both games were released within months of each other, 2nd Impression coming first, but who knows.

>>3771343
Maybe another reason why GoS resonated better with the fanbase apart from Mana was the fact that it was made by the in-house Gainax guys, they had help from actual TV series staff to help with the screenwriting and art for the game. Also, the plot of the game actually does fit the canon of the series, unlike 2nd impression where they go full non-canon, GoS isn't canon but could perfectly be another episode on the TV series during the action arc.
Another thing, the Saturn games, at least the first one, has some original animated sequences of the Eva-01 in some action scenes battling a new angel. Well, the animation of these is QUALITY-tier. It's a nice curiosity.
Finally, the Digital Card Collection is maybe the weirdest of the bunch, I'd say it's a mini-game collection with a literal digital card collection simulator, you play mini-games, you unlock cards for your folder (which is organized by Rare, characters, Evas, etc. You also unlock more mini-games, I think there are 9 or 12 in total. Some are pretty bizarre and remind of Wario Ware, like one you have to keep up with Gendo's sightline doing some QTE things, or a more arcade action game like Magma Diver where you guide Asuka to the bottom of the lavapit, and pick up the angel, evading falling rocks and lava currents. It's actually not easy to get a good rank. And I think the better you do, the more rare cards you may get. Another funny one is a quiz minigame where you're asked random things like how many times does Asuka say "anta baka" in the series, after you choose your pick between 3 options, a hilarious video plays where you can actually see how many times Asuka said "anta baka" it's just 12, by the way.
Oh, also the cards are actually short clips. They look like cards, but if you select them, a short video will play, short clips of different moments related to the card (be it Shinji, Eva-01 or a UN vehicle). There's also a whole section for the "episode preview" scenes.

I actually think the Evas look badass, but yeah, they aren't the super armored, multicolored multi-part mechas that manufacturers like Ban Dai like to produce.
It's known that, for example the original RX-78 was going to be grey, but they kind of forced Tomino to make it more colorful to make it more eye-candy and sell it as a toy.
That's why, as I said, the first ones to pick up the Eva franchise as a sponsor, and make toys for it, was Sega. Ban Dai jumped ship later on.

Those on this pic looks way better though. Look like it's straight from Guyver, which looks pretty good.
>multicolored
The problem isn't that they're not multicolored (they are), it's the way they designed their body. Sure you can do less boxy and more human-like limbs (they already did that with power-armors in metal-hero toku shows and stuff like Sonic soldier Borgman among other) but the torso is kinda messy, and the pose is more akin to the bad guy than the good guy (looks more like a beast).
Remember that in the 80s toys manufacturers already released less-conventional/weirder mech designs as plastic models (the various mechs from Five Star Stories or Dragon's Heaven).

>Those on this pic looks way better though.
They look more like toku stuff, that was still early into the design brainstorming.
>The problem isn't that they're not multicolored (they are)
Yeah I was just talking about another example in terms of design, the RX-78 has the usual blocky armor, multi-part design, but it lacked color (in its original design), the Evas were always meant to be colored (especially units 00 and 02 which are supposed to be blue and red because of the traditional oni images), 01's old design used to be all white, before they went with the thanks doc colors.
But yeah I was talking specifically about their bodies, their shape, they're very skinny, and their armors are very minimalistic outside of some intricate details, like unit 01's samurai-horned helmet.
>looks more like a beast
I guess that was the idea and they succeeded.

>Five Star Stories
I love it and love the mechas, wish I had a figure.

I was looking for it and i found this;
http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/pc/other/neon-genesis-evangelion-1st-impression/

>A Japan-only release of a Neon Genesis Evangelion episode in the form of an interactive DVD video game. Following the story of the popular animé series, the game presents an episode of its own. The player controls Shinji Ikari, the main character of the series. A new Angel appears and attacks Unit-01. As a result, Shinji loses his memory. His friends decide he should fight Asuka in Unit-02, hoping his memory will be restored as a result of the battles. The game contains many cut-scenes made by Gainax, the creators of the TV series. Many scenes are taken directly from original Neon Genesis Evangelion episodes. The player gains control when they have to make decisions for Shinji (choose correct answers, etc.), and when fighting Angels. The player should figure out which attack the Angel is using, and press corresponding buttons to defend and to counterattack it. The first Evangelion video game, released shortly after the TV series's run. The story is set after the episode ASUKA STRIKES!, with Shinji badly injured and suffering amnesia as the result of an Angel battle and needing to retrain (by sparring with Asuka in Unit-02) and having to defeat the Angel to regain his memories. The game features RPG elements and FMV clips for combat; most of the animation is original to 1st Impression (with the voices of the original Evangelion voice actors and some other content recycled from the TV series).

Seems to be a DVD that included some sort of game, didn't know it existed.
