Why do most people hate it so? It's the only X game with a real amount of challenge, the music is amazing, new sprites all around, 4 armors for X, a much more refined saber and buster for Zero, no more Guns n' Roses references... just come on, what's not to love?

Here's a dirty little secret, megaman has never been a consistently good series. The quality has always been all over the place with bad titles outnumbering the good ones.

The "challenge" comes from bad design decisions and not having most of the team that made the previous games good.

Literally, X6 exists because of Capcom's greed.

I don't think it's a bad game or anything, I actually think it's quite decent despite everything, but out of the 6 first games, I place this one second to last.

I think X5, X7, and X8 are all worse than X6 myself. I'd say X6 is a decent attempt especially considering how rushed it was, but it has its flaws for certain. I could definitely see how someone could appreciate it though.
