Don't be afraid to save scum on the English version. I think I ended up saving at most room entrances and reset if I took too much damage. The game lets you save anywhere except boss fights, so I see it as a fair way to balance the difficulty change.

As far as gameplay goes it's a very average platformer. It was also one of the first games with anime-style cut scenes and voice acting that was ever released for the American console market and is fondly remembered by many people who are into that aesthetic.
