what's /vr/ opinion on downloading arom/iso/rip/bios of a game or system that you actually bought on release? Is it still piracy and hurting the devs or is it just a convenient way to play what you already bought?

You aren't supporting the devs by buying a cartridge off of some neckbeard you stupid fucking frogposter.

Downloading roms literally makes you worse than Hitler.

I already own the cartridge or games, they happen to be on floppy disks that I cannot access or I don't have the original system anymore or it's broken or they look like shit on a non crt display.

>hurting the devs
Once a game is not published anymore, there's no way you can "hurt" the devs. They've sold all copies they had already, they can't make any more more profit unless they make a reissue (which won't happen on dead consoles). So you only hurt the reseller scum, and this is a good and noble deed.

So please buy a flashcart or emulate, and tell everyone saying you're a "pirate" that used games hurt the devs just the same. Guess why they fight them now.

This.

The ONLY way to support the devs is to buy the game when it comes out. Then they stop shipping the games to stores, meaning they won't get more profit anyway. Especially 20 years after the last copy made.

Most developers working under publishers don't make money from game sales at all, even when the game is just released and new copies are in stores.
Publishers invest in developers, and publishers get a return on that investment if the game makes a profit.
Game sales matter to devs in the sense that it makes it more likely for them to get future work.

For used games, a customer's buying behavior is different if they know a game will hold value after they purchase it than if they believe the game becomes instantly worthless as soon as they buy it, so (anticipated) used game sales, even in the distant future from the original release date, aren't just meaningless money movement, but do actually encourage game buying.

That said, there's obviously a limit on how long it makes sense to enforce the value of copies, and the real heart of these discussions should be copyright term lengths.

OP's actual question is moot on /vr/ because no one on /vr/ believes there's any situation at all where downloading unauthorized copies of /vr/ games would be bad.

Umm, I'm not sure there's enough reseller scum to actually affect game sales much.

I think there are 3 kinds of retro enthusiasts.

1) Normie poser. Wants only the authentic carts either to show off or for decor. Buys the games for their "special value" (read: how many likes they will potentially get from a selfie with a box). Often can't even say shit about the actual games they buy besides "they're great".

This your FB group.

2) Real hardware crowd. Care mostly about the authentic experience, and thus playing on actual consoles (preferably with CRT). Need everything to be "how the devs intended it", and always complain about resellers racking up prices. Also the main spreaders of input lag stories.

3) IDGAF emulation crowd. Basically care only about playing games.

These 2 are /vr/.
