Maps are in their own folders, within category folders and separated between doom 2 and doom 1. Categories are Deathmatch, maps (1-2), maps (3-19), maps (20+), and Oblige. Any maps that are for zdoom-based ports also have (zdoom) in their folder name.

Mods and TCs get their own folder.

But sometimes, he had a special thing done, they would turn the pole around and use the blunt, rounded end, then grease it up with lard or fat, and then place the victim on the pole that way.

I know no one likes to read rants, but I'll post this anyway because I need to get it off my chest.

After an insane amount of work, I finished Community Chest, aka. No Ammo: The Megawad. I ended up cheating, because I don't enjoy the idea of having to chainsaw dozens of Barons and other tough enemies dead because the map only gives you 1-2 boxes of shotgun shells and that's it. I checked the map statistics at DoomWiki, and I'm not imagining it: most maps in CC1 really do have very few ammo pickups available compared to most other WADs. I watched some UV-max demos and I have no idea how they make their ammo last. The demos always pistol start, but I didn't. I scavenged every secret area, killed every enemy that drops ammo and carried some ammo from the previous levels and I still had to cheat, because it isn't enough.

The first few levels are good, but around map 6 or 7 it starts to go down and fast.

The WAD is also full of maps that aren't fun to play even when they have enough ammo. They're filled with annoying puzzles where you have to find switches hidden in walls that aren't marked in any way. You spend more time trying to figure out where to go next than killing demons. Map 29 is the worst. Little ammo (compared to how tough the enemies are), extremely frustrating puzzles, and it never ends because it's so huge. Go and read the walkthrough (https://doomwiki.org/wiki/MAP29:_Citadel_at_the_Edge_of_Eternity_(Community_Chest)#Walkthrough). See all those puzzles? They simply aren't funny. They just waste your time.

Thank $DEITY it's over now and I never have to play CC1 again. I tried it years ago and I ragequit, now I remember why. Never again. It is the most annoying and frustrating megawad I've ever played.

This new "Leptis Magna" map in Arcane Dimensions really pissed me off.
Sure it's pretty and full of nice secrets, but yet so tedious. If you're going to put this many vorelings and lost souls in every fight, at least they should die in one hit otherwise this is just a frustration fest. The library section is also horribly unbalanced, I had to god mode to get past it because there's simply not enough ammo or health packs to make it through, unless by taking an extremely unobvious route that I'm unaware of. It also lacks shortcuts everywhere to have easier access to secrets you've missed early on. At some point you just want to move on.

For a large city map, ad_swampy was so much better.

Sunlust is very difficult, with map20 being stand out. I'd recommend other maps to torture with. 1-10 are manageable, 11-19 kinda too, but on tougher side. 20 is torture. Last third is terrifying outside of earlier maps, 29 being a particular standout.

It's intentionally tight on ammo, so it kinda starts with a pseudo-tyson. You can find a secret SSG at the start.

I would look for a snow texture with a very subtle pattern, almost pure noise. That'd make it tile much better for the large surfaces you have.

The brown metal textures could be translated to something like this(quick attempt) for example without having to get any new textures though

I just found out what it is about arcane dimensional, great as it is, that ticks me off.

it's the lack of satanist references. everything gives off a fantasy RPG with guns type of deal without it. none of the new monsters make any sense or have any justification for existing in the universe of quake without being anything other than plainly Lovecraft inspired, whereas OG quake swinged both sides.

what makes quake's lovecraft stuff immediately separate is that it ISN'T familiar, at least once you get past the generic grunt enemies. shamblers don't have eyes, shalraths don't have arms, spawns don't have any features at all, and they all clearly come from a world that has little in common with ours beyond making a mockery of any poor souls that dare to enter it and aren't armed with the clear-out section of Home Depot.

quake also doesn't have the hell stuff all the way throughout (losing it almost entirely bu the time you get to the sandy petersen-designed fourth episode), and even when it is present, it's vastly outweighed by the constant runic imagery and off-kilter architecture, aside from that one level with the shadowy jesus on the wall. that one's pretty blatant, you can have that.

more than anything it's just re-used assets, like the strogg logo in quake 2.

i think part of the thing here is that 1. arcane dimensions is a user-made level pack by multiple authors without a solid, unified theme other than making use of the extra features added in the codebase and making something that's fun for the player to play through (which didn't always succeed FUCK YOU CRUCIAL ERROR YOU'RE FUCKING GARBAGE), going from techbase industrial hell in one level to necromancy in the next and haunted caverns after that, B. quake is a hodge-podge mess of art directions to begin with and throwing in some lovecraftian stuff and dimension-hopping was the easiest way to justify the wildly different designs, and III. like you said half the shit is intertwined anyway, just with less SHIT'S ON FIRE YO and more SH'GTH M F'YREH YO

It drags on forever and ever and the rune path is hidden behind that fucking unmarked grate at the start that looks just like every other grate in the entire level and there's very little enemy variety because it's all Grunts and Enforcers with various weapons and occasionally the flying disc fuckers to pester you. It also isn't that very visually appealing, which is twice as obvious with Terror Fuma's inclusion in AD 1.5 which does techbase much, much better.

I'm well aware of the mishmash of ideas that quake was, but that same indecisive aspect is what sold me on it. it didn't quite settle for a concrete aesthetic throughout, but the more blatant undertones regarding its 'hey I think these guys might be worshipping satan' vibe were always present from episode to episode, whereas the heavy use of necromance/black magic in AD are pretty much consistently held up from pretty much the first map that doesn't take place in a techbase, and it's very apparent. swampy fogbottom or whatever the hell that garbage map is called.

I agree about the indecisive aspect- Quake is for certain a product that turned out to be way better than the sum of its parts. An open-world RPG turned engine-tech-demo with Doom gunplay shoved in and some eyeless abominations instead of demons with more different ideas thrown into the soup than Ranger has scowl lines has no business being as good as it is, yet here we are.

I also would up sequence breaking to get to the last secret (the one that normally requires shooting the three consoles) by rocket jumping onto the roof by the cliff face and going backwards from there because I couldn't figure out how to get it legit only to find you had to shoot the other two consoles instead of just the one with the Quake 'shoot me!' circle on it.

I'd love to do remakes of Zero Tolerance, Gloom and some other console/non-DOS retro-FPSes that were held down by the hardware they were run on to GZDoom, so that they could be played in relative comfort with modern controls, an FPS above 3 and a rendering resolution larger than the average Windows icon.

Someone was working on a cool-looking port of Alien Breed 3D, but then they vanished. Damn shame.

I have a bunch of assets ripped and ready from Gloom, but haven't gotten around to piecing it all together into something usable or rebuilding maps. One day...

- Cool wad. It has interesting aesthetics and new enemies, maybe I could try to map something in that style (unless I lose interest again).
- Considering most of it is made up of touched-up speedmaps, it's largerly a hit-and-miss megawad. Gloominarch's Realm is very damn harsh map but it has quite interesting gimmick for a "boss".

- Map is good. Especially for debut project.
- Depends on the map, really. If they have well made fights then they're alright.
- Also depends on the map, impressive visuals shouldn't impair player and monster movement a lot.
- Depends both on the gimmick used and it's execution.

I did play through the original Doom 1/2 back when they were released, but loved Heretic the most. In around ~'99 stumbled across Legacy and its splitscreen capabilities - then I played through it with one of my friends, and pretty much forgoten about it. I was not aware of the huge variety of source ports, or that those things existed, Legacy was a novelty thing to me, and I was not such a big fan of Doom either - played only vanilla and final, without trying any user maps.

I "rediscovered" Doom again in 2004/5 with JDoom/JHeretic (Doomsday), and its graphic capabilities amazed me to no end. I played with all the bells and whistles DHTP, reflections, lightmaps and shitton of particles. Very quick though, I realised that 3D models on monsters and weapons just don't look right, and switched them off, limiting 3D to decorations only.

Again, I did not pursue any usermade content back then.

It may come as a shock to you, but I rediscovered Doom for the fourth time with none else than Brutal Doom (version 16 that was). I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it was the thing that made me look upon GZDoom and ZDoom forums and see how much more usermade content there was. I realised what I was missing out on all these years, and now I play various mods and user maps regularily. Overtime, I acquired taste for quality content (and distaste for HD textures and filtering).

I still like BD, but the best IMO was v18, then it began getting worse.

I think Foggy Bogbottom was done solely by MFX while Leptis Magna is from Ionous and Pulsar.

Leptis Magna sucked for reasons I stated earlier, I enjoyed Bogbottom because of the atmosphere and the church area, but those maps can't help but go all over the place and become a huge uncontrolled mess. So far it seems like only Sock can pull off large city maps with great flow and cohesion.

The "lore" in these maps is such an unintelligible clusterfuck as well. Really doesn't fit well in Quake to have to stop fighting and read a small paragraph of disjointed esoteric sentences.

Actually started out as a test of my writing skill in a non-native language, and if I can write subtle descent to major mind alteration by throwing clues at a public (note when protagonists speach patterns begin to alter and he starts using a bit different phrasing - that's an indicator that he got quite literally mindfucked, whcih is the reason for his following actions and emoism). Then said "screw it", and started telling everything almost directly. Then lost 2 chapters that were in the works and that killed my enthusiasm completely, leaving this shit unfinished.
