2 and 3 are plagued with other characters that waste time in the game or mini-games. 1 is the sweet spot. It also feels like you have more freedom and arguably more immersive with a lack of npcs moaning at you for help in each level.

>> No.3759915

>>3759752
Yeah, though in 2 at least the mini-games aren't confined to side-areas that end up eating chunks of the regular levels like in 3. I also feel like the level themes in 1 are far more interesting than in 2 and 3.

>> No.3759930

>>3759752
First game was all about exploration/experimentation. Second is the beginning of mini games nonsense and NPC in charge of ruining everything, also weaker music. Not even going to mention 3.

>> No.3760548

>>3759930
The mini-games in 2 often required skills that you had been practicing anyway, like spitting, supercharging, headbashing (w/ the notable exceptions being hockey, and escort missions). In 3, the mini-games are random in nature and often have you doing things that the game doesn't typically require of the player, such as piloting a tank, of FPSing, or by playing as a totally different character.

>> No.3760570

>>3759752

The characters in 2 and 3 can get annoying at times but on the other hand 1 can get really lonely. I think a perfect Spyro game would have some levels where you are completely free like in 1 and then some with a little more life like 2 and 3.

>> No.3760574

It's probably lonely for you because you expect an NPC to be there.

>> No.3760591

Well, I played Spyro 1 when it was released so I'm not sure that is exactly true. There just isn't a whole lot of context in 1, you run around between these worlds filled with enemies and unfreeze Dragons you never really see again. Compare this to Spyro 2 where each world has it's own unique conflict that you have to solve.

>> No.3760598

Not him, that's actually why I prefer 1 at the end of the day I think. So surreal and lonely. I find it very immersive just being completely alone.

>>3763023
Part of the reason why I love Ice Cavern and Dark Passage so much is how interconnected these levels are. You have a main path and several little loops all around it, and both these levels revolve around a big central area (huge chasm for Ice Cavern and exit vortex area for Dark Passage). This game has such an excellent level design throughout it's quite crazy, and the subsequent games never quite reached the brilliance of 1's level design.

I loved all the hubs in 3 (especially Midnight Mountain) but a vast majority of the levels themselves was not very memorable. I'd say that in addition to Fireworks Factory, Crystal Islands is another one I really liked overall.

One of my favorite games. I think I played from this one to the second one. Was there a third one? I cant remember. I remember I used to have it first on one of those CD;s with demos they used to give out and played the beginning like 10 times before I got that game. My first game though was Crash Bandicoot which was also in my opinion a great game. Played all of them but the recent one. I didn't like the new look to them.

At first, I thought it was because of some kind of copy protection but even after I've bought a legit disc, it didn't read it. Weirdly enough, every game else that I had be it burned or not worked flawlessly without a stutter or the Playstation having trouble to read it.
Only Spyro 3 was affected. And even up to that point it worked flawlessly.

Why not just use the map viewer, screen cap a bird's eye view, and add the various item locations in Photoshop or something? It would look a lot more consistent and probably be easier than redrawing the levels.

>> No.3791449

1>3>2

My reasoning for this is mainly because of the thematic shift the second game took from the first, and how unlike its predecessor it was. The hub worlds and some exception levels like Hurricos, Breeze Harbor, and Fracture hills were the only parts of the game that felt like Spyro to me. All the other shit like Metropolis, Robot Farms, Zephyr, Glimmer, etc all just felt too alien. There was an overabundance of muppet-tier NPCs and sci fi themed levels. It felt like a whole new series.

Meanwhile, 3 goes back to collecting the dragon eggs like the first game. It has many more levels that have that mystical vibe like the first game. Charmed Ridge, the firefly level, the hub worlds, that crystal world, the egypt world, I can't remember the names I know, but they felt more in line with the first title than the robot and alien infested levels of the second game.

Also, say what you want about the minigames and new characters, but the bonus world for 3 is better than Dragon Shores. In terms of bonus worlds the formula still fits. 1>3>2. Nothing beats Gnastys Loot.

The only problem with that is that you can't see everything from bird's eye. (corridors, halls, indoor spaces are obscured from above) On my maps they are denoted by dashed lines.

I'm going to run into trouble with this down the line, I know. I have yet to figure out how I'm going to deal with that.

This particular map is complete btw

If you're wondering why I'm doing this, it's because missing those couple of gems (not even ones that are hard to get at, just ones I missed for whatever reason) would drive me mad in the past. I would go through entire levels all over again trying to find them. Never again. I'm going to know this entire game by heart when I'm done.

>> No.3791861

I had a feeling the entire aesthetic would be lost in a remake. That's what happened with the Crash remake.

Better graphics don't make up for a lack of good aesthetic sense. If that were the case, every single modern game would look as great as Spyro.

>> No.3792339

As a kid I remember 3 being my favourite but going back to it now it's pretty clearly the worst. It's still a damn good game but there's too many shitty minigames and gimmick levels and they end up outweighing the good.

Can't decide if I prefer 1 or 2 now though.

1 has a very dreamlike quality to it where the levels are all devoid of context for their structure and usually have a somewhat hidden path that opens them up hugely to reveal a second area in the level that isn't immediately apparent - and I love that. It also has some really fucking good level design in general.

2 has a more cartoony feel to it with the introduction of an expanded story, more NPCs, more themed settings, and a shift in design philosophy to making "levels" feel more like "locations". The minigames are also pretty fun and, unlike 3, don't feel like they eat up too much of the levels - even if their introduction seems to have replaced the focus in level design on hidden areas.

Personally I think both styles are done great and prefer 2's take on things overall, but I cannot deny that 1 was more unique and ambitious.

Fuck though I'd kill for a trilogy remaster like Crash is getting.

Autumn springs had many more levels compared to any of the other hubs (a couple of which were actually put outside the level and you were expected to glide/go across a bridge to reach them) as well as 2 speedways. It's pretty obvious they were intending to make a spring related world but it got cut for time, so they hurriedly tossed what they had into Autumn Plains instead. This is even further supported by the fact that they gate off half of autumn plains with a wall, to make it seem sort of like a separate world when you unlock it.
