The Wii is an easy to setup compact emulation box that outputs 240p to your CRT.

The Xbox 360 allows access to a treasure trove of shmups and other late 90s/early 2000s Japanese games with Xbox Live Arcade.

Does the PS3 have any value for retrogaming outside of playing PS1 games in 480i?

you can emulate a bunch of shit on ps3 nigga

>> No.3721815

If PS2 games counted as retro I would say yes.

Other than that it is decent for PS1 games and emulation.

Not sure if I would go out of my way to use this over a Raspberry Pi though.

Your PS1 games will work in the PS3. Also lots of great classic games on PSN, some of which like Harmful Park which goes for hundreds are just $5 digitally.

>> No.3721951

Was there any reason why PS2 compatibility was removed from later PS3 models? It's not like software emulation was out of the question.

What this guy said. Not the super slim model in the picture though. You need either the slim or fat ps3. With CFW you can run many emulators.

You stop being able to emulate from PSX onwards, but if you don't mind the upscaling and lack of shaders you can still run most PSX, many PS2, and even some PSP games, there are compatibility lists if you're interested.
NTSC shaders don't work but you can use filters for that instead though they're not as good nor as configurable and you'll have to download them individually as they don't come with RA PS3. crt-hyllian/(-3d) works perfectly.

I'm was already aware the original model had native PS2 compatibility (which I don't think I made clear in my original post), but what about just putting a PS2 emulator on the PS3? Isn't that what most downloadable PS2 games do that are sold from the PS Store?

I might be wrong, but I've heard it's because it's like Nintendo's N64 emulation in that it's tailored to individual games instead of being all-purpose.

PS2 emulation is a bitch on the PC you think a console from 10 years ago is gonna do it?

>> No.3722160

Also bsides being able to play PS1 retro, early version of the PS3 80GB could play PS2 games. So technically you could play the entire playstation library of the first three consoles.

Only certain PS3 higher end models had the PS2 hardware built-in, the PS2 is certatintly capable of emulating PS2 games to some degree.

Also, how's CFW on the PS3?
I've never dwell too much into it. Is it like the PSP were you can have your normal PS3 and not get banned and only use the CFW when you wanna play your ILLEGAL EMULATOR software?

But does it still not have access to the GPU? (for source ports, it sounds powerful enough for any of them) And does it have the power to emulate N64?

The sixaxis pad should work great for motorcycle games, but then there's no way such PC titles will run. That leaves whatever there is on MAME.

Also, ports of Descent/Forsaken would be neat with the 6axis.

I wouldn't recommend playing PS1 games via disc since they'll be upscaled to 480i, it's better to download them from PSN where they've been optimized for 480p. I played Megaman Legends 2 and Misadventures of Tron Bonne this way and they looked and played beautifully. I upgraded my PS3 to a 256gb SSD as well and the reduced load times are awesome.

PS3 is limited to 480i if you use composite, which would be the worst way to play these games.

I played Parasite Eve from disc on a PS3 connected to an SD Wega over component YPbPr and it was really ugly, using composite would be even worse.

If you have a Fat or Slim model (not the Super Slim like in the pic), then you can install CFW using a firmware downgrade.

By the way, does anyone know if you can transfer PS1 and PS2 saves from a PS3 onto a PS2 using a USB flash drive? I'm asking because I'm a fucking retard and traded in my PS3 USB PS1/2 memory card reader a long time ago because I had to get a new Super Slim PS3 because my fat one died and I didn't realize that all PS3 models could play PS1 games.

>If you're on OFW higher than 3.55, you CAN'T install CFW directly! You need to check if your model is old enough to be hackable (CECH25XX or lower which includes [all Fats] and [Slims older than June 2011]). If you're lucky enough and it is hackable, you can use a hardware flasher (NOR Guide | NAND Guide) to dump your 3.56+ flash, patch it and re-flash it before you can install CFW using the guides below. If your PS3 is not hackable (CECH25XX or higher which includes [all Super Slims] and [Slims newer than June 2011]), you CAN'T install CFW at all. Your only option would be to install an ODE to be able to run homebrew and backups.

Trust me, the amount of documentation about PS2 that is roaming around the internet is quite a lot compared to other consoles of that gen. On top of that it's quite a simple console with only a few caveats, it's just that PCSX2 is a shit emulator initially made for PII and even nowadays is working on many layers of hacks as nobody wants to do a complete rewrite.

It has input lag no matter what, so if that matters to you then there's no reason to own one over a PS2.

On a modded PS2 you can backup your PS2/PS1 saves to a USB Stick using LaunchELF

Don't know if theres a homebrew tool for the PS3 can let you do that...

Does it still have input lag when you connect the controller by USB cable?

Is this input lag present even when playing PS3 games?

>> No.3727292

>>3726839

Input lag definitely exists playing PS3 games wirelessly, especially when the controller battery is low. I can say for sure the USB being connected does NOTHING to avert input lag for PS1/PS2 games, play any rhythm game and you'll see what I mean. It's there because it's literally coded into Sony's emulators.

>> No.3727334

>>3721951
It isn't out of the question, but Sony figured it's better business sense to just resell PS2 games digitally than let people play the games they already owned and there was no consumer backlash against this. People with hacked PS3s have found the software emulator to be almost fully compatible

>Quite a simple console with only a few caveats

>> No.3727431

>>3727292
I'm not sure that's input lag. Rhythm games occupy a special niche where they point out the flaws of emulation. Emulators take shortcuts like not synchronising the music playback to the exact frame because who would notice if the music was 0.5 seconds out compared to a real console by the time Solid Snake rids the elevator up? But on the rhythm game it's death.

>By the way, does anyone know if you can transfer PS1 and PS2 saves from a PS3 onto a PS2 using a USB flash drive?

You should be able to, you might have to convert the PS3 save files into something a ps2 memory card can read.

after you do that though just plop the saves on a usb drive and manually transfer the saves from the usb drive to the memorycard via ulaunchelf
