Best TDP map: So many to choose. I'd go with Cragscleft Prison.
Worst TDP map: Song of the Caverns. but I'd have to replay it to see if it's really that bad.
Best TMA map: Trails of Blood. It's an atmospheric level and it reminds me of TDP more. Call me a heretic but I didn't care for the other levels.
Worst TMA map: Casing the Joint/Masks. Those levels are quite boring to go through, just big hallways with rooms and a secret way to enter them from the back.
Favourite gear: The ability to sneak around.

Oh god you just reminded me. Definitely worst Thief map I've ever played goes to kidnap. I was a dumbass and tried doing this mission in legendary and had to run away from the three guards in the same room as the guy you had to kidnap without dying from 3 hits. I had to drop him on the ground near the door and use speed potion. but, by the time I came back none of the guards were on patrol anymore, they just stood there. so i had to knock some out. one of the patrollers would automatically detect me no matter how slow I was, even if i did the sound glitch. i had to shoot an arrow into a room and hope the ai would do the walk pattern into the room, which sometimes work and didn't.

I'm not sure if that was a blogpost or not, but I just wanted to say that mission sucks.

Best TDP map: Bonehoard, and I used to hate it too. I guess it grew on me, but I've always loved plundering places like that (even the crypt in Arx Fatalis). The Sword was the most interesting and even though I felt it was somewhat of a chore, it made me want to keep playing, but if I had to choose it'd still be Bonehoard.

Worst TDP map: Strange Bedfellows, wasn't fond of revisiting a map loaded with enemies of that kind, and with nearly nothing to loot too. In TG, I found The Mage Towers tedious and unnecessarily huge, and it's difficult to say which mission I disliked more. I was fine with the Guild mission which everyone seems to hate, but since it's in the afterglow of Assassins, it wasn't horrible.

Best TMA map: Blackmail. Nice mansion break-in with a lot of stuff to steal, and a small slice of hidden spooky. But nothing matched the thrill of playing Unwelcome Guest for the first time, and it's a shame I found most of Angelwatch in Life of the Party boring. I would like the Bank more, but some parts just weren't enjoyable. And I was miffed that I didn't get to open at least one other deposit box.

Worst TMA map: Soulforge, lots of empty space. Fetch this, stick that there, turn on all these things, and on and on. A chore map with inadequate atmosphere.

Favourite gear: Rope Arrow, but if we're talking non-essential gear, Moss Arrows. Leaves a huge mess and they're so expensive I never buy them, but they do make crossing tile and metal much faster. I feel guilty whenever I use it.

Favorite gear is the flash bomb, though. I think it's a well-balanced "get out of jail free" item that is expensive and rare enough to not make it OP, and you still need skillz if you want to knock out 4-5 guards in one shot. The dialogue options in Deus Ex consist of either an obligatory line to proceed in the dialogue, leaving, and only in the best of cases

a) an action-movie one-liner
b) a collected and rational response

You also spend skill points very rarely in Deus Ex, as everything is extremely expensive or useless to upgrade, and skill points accrue very slowly. So does cash.

Thief had a handful of mechanics, but made the game revolve around it. Deus Ex used many mechanics, some of them pointless, some of them not fleshed out well, some of them downright terrible.

Which game has the better stealth system for example? It's not even a contest. Thief wins hands down.

Calendra's Cistern isa painful mess of circular, claustrophobic level design with terrible backtracking. You get access to area A, get key or something similar to area B, backtrack to the hub to get to that area...rinse and repeat.

The party area is a small mess of being caught for the slightest mistake, forcing the player to savescum to hell and back.

There's no psychological flow, no coherent and logic to the levels design and the level objectives. I remember that you have to steal something from an art dealer of some sort, and in no way does it tie in to the main story of the mission or the geographical location. In fact you need to go in the exact opposite direction of the starting and main objective areas.

The insipid love plot between Garrett and Calendra is fucking 12-year old Sonic fanboy levels of stupid. I think Thief 2 cleared the idea of Garrett entering a romantic relationship with anyone rightfully off the map.

And the points I criticised apply collectively for fanmissions. They're either too small and densely guarded, or too big and labyrinthine, but in eithe rcase too fucking cryptic and reliant on bullshit key collection over actual thief gameplay.

-Much too large.
-Level design feels like one giant corridor.
-Poor/overly simplistic building architecture.
-Poor enemy placement in many locations, the underground casino being the worst offender. On expert in particular, it becomes a blackjacking galore, since the enemy placement makes it impossible to just sneak by those fuckers, and you can't kill them either, because that's an automatic fail. So proper stealth play is impossible.

On top of that, while playing the Guild on Tfix last November, I encountered a bug where a certain door would not open, or react to anything, no matter what I tried. I had to lure one of the enemies into opening it for me by making noise, or else I would not have been able to advance. Still not sure if it was Tfix, or the mission itself.

Overall, the Thieves Guild for these reasons was a very dull and frustrating experience for me. The Mage Towers and the Song of the Caverns were much better designed, next to them, the Thieves guild felt like an afterthought.

I've played Return to Castle Morgoth, The Seven Sisters, Seven Shades of Mercury, the Rocksbourg campaign, the Order of the Vine, Disorientation, Between these Dark Walls, Mines of Margoroth, The Hand of Glory, The Bear Pits, A Better Tomorrow, Heist Society, Shadow of Doubt

just to name a few. Some of them had nice settings, interesting visuals and some other decent gimmicks, but ultimately lacked the psychological flow of an OM.

There's a certain thread running through each of those missions, with conversations, books, andsoforth being laced with hints, foreshadowing and world building. Keys are not impossible to find, and if you can't get a key you can usually lockpick it. This seems to be the most common problem, lock/key door code puzzles and other acces denial mechanics being fucking overdesigned in FMs. And here's the problem: If you build an FM, you're usually unexperienced in designing puzzles for a general demographic, so you are afraid of making it too easy and end up making it too hard. Alternatively, you just turn it into a fucking hassle. Less is more in this case. I remember in the first mission of the Rocksbourg series that I ran around for 3 hours before I found the first key beneath a porch in the Hammerite complex, and searching myself stupid for the rest of the keys. There was no hint, nothing to tell you that you needed to find a key there, it was pure random luck that I found it. You cannot argue that that is good design.

>Rocksbourg
The pixelhunting for keys and 3 minute locks everywhere made me so mad. I can't believe how people here and over at ttlg hold this campaign in such high regard. I dropped the second mission halfway through for pretty much the same reasons as the first. I heard the third one was the best of the bunch but I'm not interested in trying it out anytime soon.

>The Seven Sisters
I hate that I'm forced to play the same mission twice. The mission itself is very good but not enough that I would love to play it twice in a row. Limiting how much I can explore by giving me only one lockpick was pretty lame too. It bothers me how garrett seems to act out of character, going out of his way to save random people in the city for no reason. Really none of his motivations make much sense. The final mission is very linear, but I find it memorable at least.

>Order of the Vine
Somewhat dated, and a couple of very annoying "features", but still very good in my opinion.

>Seven Shades of Mercury
Pretty weak start that is linear and scripted as shit, but once it's over it opens up and turns into a really good mission. I liked the gimmicks and I think they kept the gameplay interesting.

>Mines of Margoroth
This mission and the campaign it belongs to don't play a lot like classic thief. It's a lot more focused on exploration and puzzle solving. If you're not into that sort of thing, I can see how you might find it annoying. I really like it, though.

>Shadow of Doubt
This campaign is a bit of a mixed bag, it has some meh missions, but it also has two of the best missions in their respective genres in my opinion. Tears of blood is a great prison escape mission and broadsword of sheol is probably the best and most underrated horror mission ever.

>Disorientation, Between these Dark Walls, Heist Society
I think all of these are really good and don't have any weak points. They are better than most of the oms in my opinion.

I liked the guild as some sort of underground maze, it fills a quota. It sort of weirds me out when I enter Reuben and Donald's quarters, it feels like two levels patched together. Mage's Tower is top tier aesthetically speaking, but too linear.
But I really like the supernatural elements lf TG in general. I loved how quickly the mood changed in the last three levels, shame that they feel kinda rushed out.

You should definitely play Rocksbourg 3. It has none of the author's mistakes in the first two missions and is genuinely one of the best and scariest missions out there.

Its quite fucking telling of the state of the videogame industry when the only games I expect in 2017 is some fucking news from From Soft, Mount and Blade 2 and a campaign for god damn game form the late 90s.

Dishonoured was so disappointing, again beautiful art direction but such compromised gameplay. Devs are out of touch.

Best TDP map: The Sword
Worst TDP map: Thieves Guild
Best TMA map: Blackmail
Worst TMA map: Trace the courier

Favourite gear: Flashbangs and Sword for undead missions, I actually love tomb raiding missions and love all the D&D Rogue archetype.
The tombs in Thief games are amazing and I love to get lost. Wish the combat was even more complex but hey.

>Devs are out of touch.
I think we're out of touch. We want games that challenge us and give us an opportunity to learn relatively complex mechanics and employ patience and planning. We're like film snobs.

Devs are going for the game equivalent of the michael bay/marvel crowd. Although Thief is a superior use of the medium, most people don't want to be challenged, they just want to enjoy. If game revvieweers tell them it's the best, they will believe it. The word patience does not mean anything to any of them. QTEs reign supreme because most people like them.

A marvellous effort I would say, but the Sword mechanics and physics are wonky as hell.

The OMs have the golden cut of Thief level design. Unless you enjoy the breaking of that golden standard, the missions will ultimately be of a lesser quality. And I don't.

Disorientation for example, while it advertises its hugeness, is just too big.

I've always felt T2 had the most underrated or underappreciated levels in the series, in the form of Eavesdropping, Blackmail and Precious Cargo

I also understand how Casing the Joint/Masks get a lot of flak, but the atmosphere and level layout is so enticing that I didn't at all mind replaying the level the first time around.

Blackmail is amazing, I see a lot of people who love it.

I had a friend who was sure he had saw the Sheriff killer following him

The way the tension builds, and there is something weird with the mission.

The ambient, the atmosphere like you are being watched, Thief has a weird bizarre feeling for me which I dont know if other anons feel as well. Its like the devs infused devilish magic in this fucking game.

So I remember reading somewhere that Thief 2 was also supposed to get a gold-release, before Looking Glass studios folded. And that incomplete versions of the intended T2Gold maps were leaked somewhere by the devs themselves. Is this true, and has anything been done with those maps since?

There was. I don thtink nobody ever tried to make however which is a shame.

I would be fucking amazing to get them but how with no VAs and mission briefings?

http://thief.wikia.com/wiki/Thief_II_Gold

There was one mission where Garret would steal from a museum and a university, I can imagine he atmosphere. And a fucking awesome mission where you would raid a Necromancer tower in the outskirts of the City.

There was also a mission dealing with Hammerites to explain to the player what happened to them in between the games, since the game makes it ambiguous.

I liked those two mission. The feeling of scouting around before the exibition day was satisfying. Being able to guess where the cultivator or the masks were based on my previous exploration was a new feeling compared to the usual approach. A bit easier, but it was fun to bet on that guess.

There were some early screenshots and concept art leaked but the mission files themselves weren't leaked afaik. There was a fan project some years back to create levels based on the concepts but it fizzled out before anything came of it. One of the members of the project finished and released one of the missions on his own but it turned out pretty bad.

Big well done maps, psy powers for stealth, I think it would be very similar.

I remember one of the tensest moments in SS2 was stealthing the cargo deck with those combat droids and suicide bots, because I was a scrub.

there was the original version of thief 4, where it took place in a modern setting. But it was pretty different, with a big gameplay element being the ability to enter a silent hill style dark world, that would get more messed up depending on how many people you've killed in the regular world

There's a problem of security systems being very advanced and plentiful though. Any futuristic setting would have to explain how we're able to evade endless thermal cameras, motion sensors, laser tripwires, automated gun platforms, security bots, etc. without over-reliance on hax0rz, boatloads of equipment, or limiting ourselves to robbing the ghetto. If a game wants to resemble the original Thief mechanically, the main method of staying undetected should be movement.

Despite that though, a futuristic setting would have a lot to offer in terms of atmosphere. We can have the best of gritty cyberpunk and shiny optimistic future depending on when and where missions take place. I imagine valuables would take the form of high-tech goodies and exotic narcotics instead of gold and jewels though.

Great, now I want a futuristic Thief game too. Call me a pessimist but I don't think we'll be seeing one soon, unless we make it ourselves.
