Why isn't there an adapter to plug a good controller into the n64?

Who needs an adapter when you could be using the hori pad, the greatest controller ever?

Most of the games on the n64 were tailor made for this abomination, super mario 64 basically needs that thumb stick else it feels really loose.

There is a mod to put a gamecube style stick on there, but I've heard mixed things.

>> No.3716340

It's not that awful. Sure, the d-pad looks silly, but it's not a wide controller so you don't have to stretch your thumb far to reach it. Plus it feels fucking great in your hands.

I'm glad there is some smart people here. I have 4 Hori Mini 64 controllers, and while they are expensive, you get everything you pay for. They are PURE quality. The best controller you could ever use for the N64 (assuming its not one of the few games that use the D-Pad as primary control)

To answer OP, search rahpnet for different adapters. They have some awesome adapters you could buy (I have a few). I believe there is a few for the N64 (I know there is one that allows you to use a gamecube controller for the N64)

So there are options. But if you can, seriously grab a Hori 64 controller. Its quality is unmatched.

Gamecube-style replacement sticks can work a lot better if you use a replacement PCB for your stick (micro's PCB v3), but it's still not ideal. There's also several different versions of the Gamecube-style replacement sticks so your mileage may vary. Aside from that, some people have replaced their N64 analog sticks with PS2 ones. There's also a Lodgenet controller mod that I've heard is decent. Raphnet makes a pretty good Gamecube adapter, and there's a few different adapters for Xbox/360 controllers and keyboards.

>> No.3718650

The fucking thumbstick feels so fucking comfy. Maybe it's nostalgia or crt monitors or the textured grip or the space you can swing it around and have it stand up to shit. Maybe it's the notches for the 8 directions they sorta kept on the gamecube controller too. I DON'T KNOW but all I remember is comfy.

It's like a L2/R2 set-up. You have a Z button on both sides. And the 'L1/R1' is your standard L and R button for the N64

>> No.3718707

If you want a good alternative to the N64 stick that won't be a fucking disaster, get that $35 gamecube controller adapter.

>>3718604
Most GC-style replacement sticks are incredibly low quality. Haven't seen or used a good one in the dozens I've handled.

>>3718619
there are two Z-buttons, one on each shoulder.

>>3718679

n64 sticks were designed in a very specific way that wasn't really emulated again, mostly because of how fragile the sticks are. It's sort of designed like a pestle and mortar. The stick ends up wearing into the base of the analog contraption (for lack of a better word, I'm tired) and becomes loose. You can fill it back in, but it's a temporary fix. High quality replacements are possible but you start veering into this is retard expensive and not feasible for mass production territory so the style was never revisited.

I'd like to see more Saturn style analogs, magnetic resistance and meant to be thumb centered instead of a stick you push on the edges of.

I only have one of those. I was unable to afford more than one (and didn't think I'd need more than one, since everyone else had their own N64 controller) back then, but now I really cannot afford another one of the Hori Mini controllers. Unlike SNES, Genesis, Playstation, and Saturn, where I have plenty of replacement controllers if one were to break on me, I only have one Hori Mini, and now with its inflated price according to >>3716186 I am now scared to use it any more than I already have. To be honest, I have average sized hands and I find the Hori Mini controller even more cramped than a Dreamcast controller. It is great, but knowing everyone has monster hands preferring the Xbox Duke controller in my country, I have no clue how only the smallest of Japanese persons can use the mini.

>>3716132
Raphnet Technologies appears to have SNES to N64 as well as Gamecube to N64 adapters.

It's just a really shitty way to position your fingers. One on what would be R1 and the other on what would be L2, with DualShock button names in mind.

And barely any N64 games used the L button anyway. It was almost always Z and R.

they could just add a switch that changes L1 to Z so for racing games or star fox the L1 works like your Z, and for other games like shooting games you can use L2/R2.

So, with two R buttons and L/Z on the left. That would work.

Except if a game used the left and middle prongs of the controller only, but the only thing I remember with that setup was the Ekans minigame in Pokémon Stadium. And I think Bakuretsu Muteki Bangai-Oh might have had an input scheme like that. But for everything else, Z was basically what would have been the L button on other consoles.

playing against someone using this for competitive smash is pretty brutal. huge advantage for that to be able to z cancel and use the joystick at a much faster rate

>> No.3722706

>>3722690
It doesn't make a big difference for z-cancelling, but it does help taunt canceling, SDI, pivots, and dash dancing at the expense of making falling up-airs, walking, shield tilting, and low stick jumps harder. It also resets kind of forcibly which sometimes causes you to jump out of multishine if you're not careful.
