371602 No.371602 [Reply] [Original]

Two questions:

1. Would this game still be enjoyable today to someone that had never played it before?

2. Would it be worthwhile to put together a good DOS machine for it, with Gravis Ultrasound, etc. for the original experience? Or is the new "Ur-Quan Masters" enough? Or should I try the 3DO version instead?

>> No.371616

>>371602
1. Yes.
2. Ur-Quan is pretty much the definitive version, it's the DOS one with some voices (that you can turn off) and moddability added on.
The 3DO version just added some movies that are easily modded in to the UQM one if you want them.

>> No.371615

1. Yes

2. Do Ur-Quan Masters.

However, make sure you can get the map that came with the game so you don't have to go looking up spoilers just to progress.

Well... that just... depends on the person and their taste I guess. Like with any other game.

SC2 is really in a class by itself though, isn't it? Hard to predict whether someone would like that based on their other tastes.

>> No.371634

The only seriously outdated part of SC2 is the need to take notes as you play. Write down everything that looks important, especially coordinates. The game will not help you if you forget.

That's a good kind of outdated though...

More games should require note taking.

Hey OP, I played this for the first time in 2008 and was just blown away by how good it was. I couldn't stop playing.

So I can't say if you'll like it or not, but certainly it is enjoyable for a modern audience.

Might be a bit frustrating if you're use to more modern games. No quest log, and no autosave/checkpoints. It's very worth it though. I played Ur-Quan Masters for the first time just a couple years ago and loved it.

If you need easy mode, find the "Role Playing Resource Guide." It's a complete guide to the game, starting with a list of the most recourse rich planets in the galaxy.

I always see nothing but praise for this game, what makes it so good?

The aliens. Boldly seeking out new life and new civilizations. And either making them be your friends, or blowing them out of space if they won't play nice.

The Spathi's traditional daily prayer:

"Oh God, please don't let me die today! Tomorrow would be so much better!"

i tried playing the first star control, but it was really hard to get into. the story was a bit...badly conveyed.

It was the first DOS game ive played since i was a kid, and my eyes...too many years have they seen pretty things. i just couldnt adjust to the line segments.

The first Star Control is decent but flawed. It's too bad, because I would really like to play a more balanced game in that style using the SC2 ships.

>> No.380268

>>377418
In the first game the "story" is just an excuse for various ships to be blowing each other up.

1. It's still one of the best space operas ever made. I first played it when I was around 9 or 10, and still love it to this day as an 18yo.

2. Just play UQM, it's superior to the original in every way.

Fwiffo. If you threaten him.

one thing you should know is that the UR Quan masters is missing some dialogue if you play it with voices enabled, which makes things a bit harder to figure out
