I need recommendations for games similar to Faxanadu and Adventure of Link.

>> No.3713021

You could try digging a bunch of old baby diapers out of your neighbor's trash can, arranging them in a circle on a piece of cardboard, and then microwaving them for about four minutes. And then try to eat that. That's slightly more fun and innovative than Adventure of Link.

On the NES you have Battle of Olympus, a great overlooked Zelda 2 clone.

Haven't played them but the other Xanadu games on more obscure consoles are supposed to be pretty cool.

>> No.3713030

Notice how Faxanadu is derived from Dragon Slayer II: Xanadu?
Therefore you should check out Dragon Slayer III: Romancia, Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family (Legacy of the Wizard) and Dragon Slayer V: Sorcerian

I suggest the Wonder Boy/Monster World series, 3 through 5.

>> No.3713045

Wizards and Warriors, pretty similar, the difficulty is pretty low. But it has probably one of the best scores on the NES.

W&W is dull as fuck like really every one of rare's nes games. Too competent to be shit but still unenjoyable. Other then Wise's music the game is completely unremarkable.

I dunno, I like Solar Jetman. It's like Sub-Terrania but without being fucking impossible. One of the best Thrust clones for sure.

OP here thanks for the suggestions so far i really want to try Sorcerian when my flash cart arrives. I noticed that there are a a lot of suggestions for NES which is cool but what about fourth gen consoles and beyond? I already know about some of the big hitters like Monster World, Castlevania and Ys.

Super Metroid
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Every other Metroidvania since
seriously though La-Mulana is nice

I like it. I think the locations and monster designs go a long way to making it enjoyable, the items are fun, etc. The only bad part is they didn't seem to know how to balance the difficulty, so you die constantly but get infinite lives basically.

PC Engine CD version is the best but it's not translated

>> No.3713370

I thought the only one translated was the IBM/DOS release by Sierra.
All attempts for the MD are listed as unfinished.

Apparently there is a complete translation for the MSX but some doubt might be in order.

Is that any good? Looking at videos, the combat looks kind of crappy

It's very difficult. Basically if you picked up Zelda 2 blind and were frustrated with how challenging it is but you persevered and got the hang of it, you can have that experience again (and basically must to beat it). There's a sequel that's only on MSX2 that's a bit more balanced but still very challenging.

OP checking in. I just started Ys III for the genesis and holy shit is it challenging for a first time player. I've played the remake for pc and it wasn't that bad. I'm having fun though.

I guess Getsu Fuma Den fits the bill. There are no levels but it's action/adventure with a top down overworld, sidescrolling action and power ups to get along the way. Somewhat non linear.

Underrated game imo. Konami re-used the engine of this game to make the first TMNT.

Protip: for the faux 3D maze like segments, there is an item that can lit the place.

Just wait. You're going to grind a bit right now and get some better gear in addition to getting used to the physics and it'll get a lot easier and you'll start feeling like a real hero for most of the game then you'll get to the final stage and have all your hopes and dreams crushed like a child.
