What do you guys think about playing your games on the PS2? In my opinion, its better on the PS2 than on the PS3 since there's no input lag at all. It's the best Sony has gotten to an alternative to playing discs on PS1.

>> No.3708978

>>3708969
You have to install a hard drive via the network adapter, and run the games off of that.

This is actually the best thing about playing any PS1 or PS2 games on the fat old PS2 instead of an old PS1 or slim PS2. While it takes a tad longer for the console to boot up initially, it reduces in-game load times to practically zero. Combined with a good set of component cables, I find it to be the absolute best option available.

Lol, no. PS1 games run off of the actual PS1 hardware inside the PS2. They included it!

When you're using the PS2 to play DVDs and PS2 games, the PS1 hardware controls is used to control the audio or something.

I use the PS2 because I had a hard time disc swapping on the PS1. I'd put in the disc and then it wouldn't whir. I dropped Chrono Cross because it just wouldn't run the second CD. Final Fantasy VIII took ages and a few restarts for it to transition from one disc to the other.

Using PSXLauncher to boot burned discs on a PS2 all you're doing is performing the swap trick in 100% safety since PSXLauncher acts like the program on a magic swap disc, hence you're launching the game as if it was original, so all features that would be enabled by loading an original PS1 disc will still be enabled.

>>3710427
Launching PS1 isos on a PS2 will require an emulator, since the PS1 mode of the PS2 has literally no access to the hard drive or the usb ports.
Google POPStarter rev 13 and follow a guide on how to install it on your PS2 and how to convert isos so that they will work with it.
Mind, the compatibility is not the same for USB and HDD, check both compatibility lists for your game, and quite some games requires fixes(can be applied with the converter included with the main emulator).

If all this is too complicated for you(and i suspect it is if you needed to ask on /vr/ for something that takes one google search to find), stick to physical burned disc and PSXLoader, you'll have the same compatibility of original discs.

It's emulation, but not the usual kind.

More specifically it is processor substitution. The MIPS CPU of the PS1 is replaced by a PowerPC that has no other function other than to emulate the MIPS original.

It's actually arguable that the PS2 Slim is actually engaging in a form of PS2 emulation itself since it used that MIPS processor in PS2 games.

Accuracy of PS1 emulation on the slim is almost perfect. Minor timing differences broke compatability in some games. They fixed just about everything in the last Slim revision.

I don't have currently access to my PS2 slim, but it's compatibility is far from good to PS1 games.
Either way, the slim line is notoriously bad due their hardware failure rate, I wouldn't recommend anyone getting one for any reason.
I bought five 5000X PS2 classics for that reason, reliable hardware and almost pefect PS1 compatibility.

The Gamecube has half the noise of the Xbox and DC.

The slim, as long as it's not dusty inside, has 1/4 the noise of the GC.

The main fault of the slim is when lid-down sensors don't engage.
This is easily fixed; watch youtube tutorials for instruction.

:/ my ps2 can't read a lot discs anymore. It probably will read some PS1 games, but I recall black discs would usually fail in later years. (this is a playstation black disc!) More recently I tried to clean out the laser, took it apart entirely and cleaned all of the extra lenses inside and out with alcohol and put them all back together. As well as recalibrated the laser by painstakingly turning the gears one little click at a time til it was detecting the games I knew WOULD work vs the one I was trying to play (Xenosaga).

Anyway the end result was no success. I'll probably have to replace some parts entirely, which is a shame because the console has a lot of sentimental value for me.

Much of the technical forums are full of threads with several similar problems, when it comes to the slim models, too many problems to take care of, too much time and money consuming to do so.
The most common issue with the slim models is when they scratch or even destroy disks, more than a few games have been destroyed that way.

There's no way for FMCB to possibly force the PS2 to use its PS1 hardware to play PS1 games. Once it switches over to the PS1 mode it's completely running on internal PS1 hardware and has no knowledge of FMCB, USB ports, or hard drives.

If you want to play PS1 games from solid state media you'd need something like the PSIO or a mod that physically hijacks that data bus from the optical drive if anyone's even made one for the PS1/2.
