Hey guise, what are some good top-down perspective 2d games that play as fluidly as zelda?
I've tried neutopia, golden axe warrior and crusader of centy, but they're all clunky and don't feel good to control. Ys could be good if the dungeons were better designed, and less repetitive.

It's been a few years but I honestly remember that game being smoother than ALttP. I think there might be something wrong with your control setup. Are you emulating on a phone?

Avatar: The Last Airbender for GBA is a great Zelda like adventure. You trade between 3 playable characters and switching between them is necessary for puzzle solving.

out of those the only one I haven't tried is alundra. I'll check

what do you take me for? phones are for calling people and showing funny images to friends. I'm using an usb controller (which albeit generic is quite responsive) on kega fusion. The animations are smooth, but the character feels clunkier than the gbc zeldas.

If you're going to try Terranigma, make sure to get the NTSC patch, otherwise it's going to be slow. With the patch it's fast like it should be.

I wouldn't recommend Beyond Oasis/Story of Thor just like that though, the combat system is heavily based on beat em ups so the controls WILL feel clunky at first unless you're really into beat em ups.

Play Ys Chronicles+ or Napishtim/Felghana/Origin, that also sounds like what you're looking for even if Napishtim/Origin aren't retro by this board's standards. Try Ys IV and V for SNES too.

>Never been too big on Ys, but maybe it's time I put aside the bad first impression.
I get that, I may be ripped apart here but to be honest the retro iterations were mostly kind of shitty. The new PC/PSP remakes are a lot better. The very first Ys is very simple and light on dungeons even in the remake (although half the game IS a big dungeon...), but the second Ys is amazing and games like Felghana really fit the description of fluid top-down gameplay. They also have awesome music. On top of all that the (remake) lore is fairly cool, definitely worth a try.

Fair enough. I actually played through it on Gens, but Kega is supposed to be a better emulator. I just wonder why it would feel clunky for you.

Can't go wrong with Crystalis (NES version) and Alundra.

Crystalis has a couple of obscure puzzles but Alundra is amazing.

>> No.3703554

Alundra is truly amazing. It's world is lively and connected and characters feel characters. And those who think it will be a happy-go-lucky stuff with butterflies in theme of saturday morning's cartoons, are in for a surprise. There's despair, there's hopelessness and lots of funerals with heart breaking music. The girl who couldn't sleep because things exploded when she did, the single parent drunk man with cute daughter, nightmare of the hunter, Meia's childhood. And the thing under the church...

Go play them again. Both Neutopia and Golden Axe make your character stop on it's tracks for every sword swing, which are painfully slow and only hit in front of you instead of an arc like in zelda. Crusader of Centy is better in that aspect, but the sword mechanics is still not really to my liking. Even daikatana is more dynamic than those games

Secret Quest is a pretty nifty take on the formula for the 2600 given the system's limitations. And while a completely different game altogether, Berzerk has kind of a Zelda feel to it.

I finished that last week. I'd hardly call it fluid or anything like Zelda at all. Some pretty bullshit adventure game logic too. I was stuck at the part where you have to shoot the boulder with an arrow for days.

Now I'm playing the second one and can't figure out how the fuck you build a ladder. They are fairly decent games for their time though, especially considering the lack of much precedent to build on for the type of game play.
Thank goodness the second game made days longer and gave you more stamina. And made it so that you have to eat more than once every three or four days.

>> No.3710613

>>3710387
FUuck I played them like six weeks ago. I should have written a guide, can't hardly remember how to do shit in them. For a ladder I'm pretty sure it's like stick+rope or something. Remind me what materials you have.

>> No.3710616

I should note I couldn't get the best ending in the second one because there's a altar behind a giant boulder and despite having reduced the younger brother the MC just says "can't move it without help" so lol I dunno.

>>3706838
The bump mechanic is used well as far as I'm concerned and the second game has projectile attacks

I do agree Oath and Origin are better but people chimp out about the very idea of bump-based melee and miss out on other good elements of those games, like the almost shmup-esque boss battles.

I own the NES version of Spiritual Warfare. My parent's ordered the game from a Christian Book Distributor catalog after they got their tax returns.

Since I never had a PC that could run games I never thought about getting a PC version of Spiritual Warfare. I've been searching to see if someone uploaded a copy of the PC Spiritual Warfare manual.
