Buddy got me Vagrant Story for the holiday which was super swell of him, never got to play it before.

what am I in for

confusion

>>3700424
The game has a real nice built in FAQ that explains a lot
I tend to keep a separate weapon for each enemy type but I don't mind the time it takes to switch weapons
If you can't seem to hurt a boss by wacking it with a weapon then try other means like chains and break arts

>> No.3700452

>>3700424
Reading the in-game manual first which you really should do.

Also to save you the confusion, when you scan an enemy you have to go to the status screen and press R1 to see their stats

>> No.3700451

Weapon customization and the localization you wish PSP Final Fantasy Tactics got.

Also wine.

>> No.3700480

You're in for a lot of hit-chaining. Once you get the timing down it's not too bad.

>> No.3700541

Been meaning to make a thread about this.

When I played the final boss, I could only ever do 1 damage to it, so I basically chained attacks over and over until I mistimed, prayed he didn't kill me, then re-attempt to build up a new chain of 1 damage attacks. Is that the only way to defeat him?

>> No.3700557

>>3700424
>what am I in for

A bit of frustration followed by a lot of fun once everything starts to fall into place. I recommend dropping the current play-through and starting over at that point.

Just use a map for the fucking forest.

>> No.3700559

>>3700541
Pretty much, he has ridiculous defenses across the board (especially on light and dark) so even doing single-digit damage is a big deal.

>>3700541
>>3700559
I just spammed break arts.

First time I got there I was Cursed, so Bloody Sin one shot me.

Vagrant Story is fun and a decent game, but it's pretty obtuse in its systems, even with it's insanely robust in game documentation.

>> No.3700571

>>3700559

Right, second only to Parasite Eve's running segment, Vagrant Story had one of the most confusing final bosses that sticks in my mind from JRPGs I've played. Whilst chaining him over and over I kept wondering "there has to be a better method I'm just not clever enough to pick up on."

(just looked up the bit from PE that I mentioned, here it is https://youtu.be/UwBOU-k1UAA?t=817 I had to do the entire thing a few times because the stupid thing caught me.)

>go for the save point

That really pissed me off. PE is a fun game but if you built wrong (which you probably did the first time) it really sucks and you take forever to kill the final boss.

Build right? The game's a breeze.

>> No.3700760

>>3700480

yeah that's giving the headache now. I can do my attacks FAIRLY reliably but getting the defense timing down is harsh

especially since I can't always remember what I put on what button

It's possible to build a weapon and gear yourself with only guaranteed drops to deal more than 1 damage at that point, even more if you're willing to do training dummies grinding.

Usually two of the same item type in close tiers raise the final product a tier and a lot of other combinations drop it which might be potentially useful in certain circumstances.

But really it's just "Look up Charts"

>> No.3701009

>>3700573
it's fucking hilarious actually, because it's idiotic to think you'd have time for a save point right then, of course it's gonna kill you

>> No.3701057

Most people don't understand how to play the game. They do things like let their risk max out by using chain combos, then wonder why they do 1 damage and get hit by all the status effects and instant death spells.

You shouldn't do long chains unless you understand how to get 30+ links, if you can't then anything over 6 or 7 chains is going to give exponentially lesser gains for more risk cost, you won't be able to clear the risk with just one or two vera bulbs. If you play the game and keep fighting with any amount of risk more than ZERO then you're doing it wrong.

You're also doing it wrong if you choose your weapons or grind them based on monster species, because the vast majority of your damage is going to be decided by element and attribute. So having the highest pierce value possible, then using a Pierce break art, or having the highest water element, and using spells to raise element and lower resistance, then using a water break art, that's how you actually do the most damage. The game screen will even explicitly tell you this when you target a body part, and it says "PIERCE/NONE" that means your weapon is using the Pierce and Non-Elemental attributes to do the most damage regardless of the other elements or Slash/Blunt, so if you switch to a weapon with higher pierce you'll do more damage.

You can use gems and magic to raise one element so high that it's always the active damage element and will grin no matter what you're fighting, you can finish the game with one element over 50 without seriously grinding, and if you raise that with gems and use resistance magic, you can even use your wind weapon to kill the wind elemental, just so long as the difference between your element and theirs is high enough.

Frustration and confusion.
If you stick with it you'll find it's one of the greatest and most unique JRPG's in existence and you will fucking cry that there will never be anything like it ever again.

great story, comfy atmosphere, in-depth crafting system, 10/10 music, interesting puzzles, challenging combats.

Pretty much all the good stuff you'd expect from a great RPG.

My advice is take lots of vera roots and vera bulbs to reduce you risk during combat. you want low risk at all times, otherwise you just miss all the time.

you can break the game early by spamming gain life and gain magic on the first dummy and learning all chain abilities (like raging ache and phantom pain)

Wine and great asses. You'll probably need a walkthrough at some point. Just know that stat-raising potions give you a random stat boost between 1 and 5, so you'll want to savescum potions until you get the roll you want. And open every chest. Aside from that it's tough to permanently fuck yourself over.

>It would make sense to think "High affinity = higher damage thus it's reversed for armor"
I don't think it does really, if you get an armor with negative affinity it actually makes more sense that it's weaker against said affinity, armors are meant to defend shit, if they have negative values it means they don't defend against certain things, likewise if a weapon has negative values against dragons it means it doesn't damage dragons well.

The only thing "similar" to Vagrant Story is the Brandish series, and even then it's only vaguely similar in a few regards. Vagrant Story is a unique game in mostly everything, it's one of those games that did its own thing.

Shame we'll never see the whole story, and game, Matsuno planned, you were actually supposed to play for a good part outside of Lea Monde too, I don't care too much for the scrapped partner characters like Merlose or Tieger and Neesa, but I would have loved to play that supposed part of the game after you wrap it up in Lea Monde and travel back to the Graylands.

This

People are asking for a vagrant story HD remake but I'd rather keep the gorgeous low poly graphics and get a rerelease with all the missing content

Shame we'll never get the old team back together. Even if you somehow got Matsuno, Yoshida and Sakimoto on board square has just changed too much to ever put out something like this

Seriously, all their games are atmospheric and comfy as fuck to me.
