What's the easiest way to play burnt PS1 games on real hardware, without having to spend 10 minutes trying to swap the discs out fast enough to get it to boot?

>> No.3696416

Modbo 4.0

>> No.3696418

Buy one of those $10 boot-discs on eBay. They come with a spring to keep the lid button closed and work great for swapping in backups.

Mod chipped PS1
Or soft modded PS1(nothing never than the 7500 series) with a Killer and it's other 99999999999 derivatives

>> No.3696457

>>3696418
This. I've been using the same disc and spring for 16 years, you can't go wrong. It loads a static boot menu, you swap discs and press any button to load the burned game.

>> No.3696472

As I was reading the replies to this thread my slim PS2 running a burnt PS1 game had the tape come off the lid detector and stop, it's usually not a problem I just hate how unpredictable it is.

I'm not getting anything when I search for "PS1 boot disc" on ebay, and do they work with PS2s? That seems like the easiest option though.

>> No.3696486

>>3696472
Look for Swap Magic. Don't accidentally buy the PS2 version.

>> No.3696498

>>3696486
Err, I meant don't accidentally buy the DVD version. The CD version should work with both.

>> No.3696589

I really need to know if popping a Playstation disc (real or burned) into a PS2 will play it natively or invoke emulation, or does PS2 only do emulation? Right now I'm playing PS1 isos using PS2's Popstarter emulator through USB/SMB and the results are hit or miss.

>> No.3696592

not a cheat device, that's for sure
you get sound and boot errors constantly

>> No.3696620

>>3696589
The audio co-processor for the PlayStation 2 is a ps1 CPU. The PS2 does not emulate the PlayStation games.

>> No.3696624

>>3696620
To answer your question better since I misread, it doesn't emulate games on a burnt disc.

>> No.3696627

>>3696620
So you are strictly speaking in terms of using the disc drive right? Because Popstarter I believe is emulation based. Everywhere I look, Popstarter is described as "Sony's PS1 emulator", where as Popsloader is the equivalent for PSP, which is in fact emulation.

https://bitbucket.org/ShaolinAssassin/popstarter-documentation-stuff/wiki/Home

>$ony’s PS1 emulator for PS2 (known as “POPS” or “SLBB-00001”)

>> No.3696640

>>3696627
No, he's trying to say Sony's PS1 emulator on PS2 is called POPS, not Popstarter

And it might only apply to later models where they replaced the PS1 MIPS CPU with a PowerPC for whatever reason

>> No.3696668

when I was a kid I got my ps1 modded for $40
each burned disc was sold for $10

>> No.3696702

>>3696589
Quite frankly, if you're playing from a burnt disc, it's not emulation. It's basically a ps1 at this point, with faster disc speeds (there are some other minor differences, but I don't feel like digging up specifics in order to not get anything wrong and trigger the autists.)

Once you start playing PS1 games straight from ISOs, whether it be via USB or a bootloader for the HDD, it gets wonky. It was just never meant for that.

I'm ready to go back to using discs because they are cheap and going back to basics always work. But after soaking up enough gossip on /vr/ and the rest of the internet, I'm extremely worried about the life span of the laser.

>> No.3696948

>>3696871
Even if it happens, just buy another one, they aren't hard to find or even that expensive. Hell, I've got 4 of them sitting in my office closet right now: 2 fats (one modded with a flip top shell) and 2 slims, and I'm not even a collector. They just show up at yard sales for $10, and I'm always scumming them for parts when my modded main one breaks.

That's the best way to play iso on ps1. I remember Seiken Densetsu wasn't playable on modded ps1 but you could enter a code to bypass the piracy protection with pic related.

Thing have maybe changed and you can patch your iso to remove protections.

With the price of pic programmers these days you may as well buy one and a few chips and do it yourself. It will probably cost less than buying and shipping a single programmed chip and you'll have spares is you fuck one up or want to mod more consoles.
You can also then try different versions to see what works best for your console.

Slim PS2 with a softmod. It has actual PSX hardware and runs every PSX game perfectly, no matter what that compatibility list says. (I've personally played some of the games that are said not to work on any model. They worked fine.)

With a softmod, you can do an "assisted swap." The disc motor stops after verifying the real PS1 disc, so you can just switch them at your leisure.
