This.

Both Sonic 3 and &K were a bit disappointing after the epic Sonic 2.

I think the problem with Sonic 3 & Knuckles is that the levels just seem to go on and on, and in some zones this becomes tedious, like Garden Marble, Carnival or Sandopolis act 2.
People complain about Metropolis in Sonic 2 for having 3 acts, but with just 2 acts, some zones in S3 manage to be worse than Metropolis.
Music also felt a bit disappointing after the soundtracks by Nakamura from 1 and 2, most of it is good, but I don't know if Angel Island is up to stardard for being a first zone hit track, same with Mushroom Hill, they're just okay but you can't really say they're as memorable as GHZ or EHZ.
I mean the soundtrack is fine, but it takes some time until it grows on you, and I'm still not a big fan of stuff like Carnival Zone or Launch Base. Also that fucking bonus music man, it's terrible, especially the one from Sonic & Knuckles, I don't want to go to the bonus stage because of the music, it's annoying, and you might enter into bonus stages accidentally a lot.

I'll say the competition VS music from Sonic 3 is a lot better than the main soundtrack. The only zone track that's among my favorite Sonic music ever, like top 10, is Hydrocity, that's just perfect.

It's still a masterpiece though, the last one from the Sonic franchise, but I still like 1 and 2 the best. Especially 1. I don't need no spindash to go fast.

-Addition of Knuckles
-late in Gen's lifespan so graphics were great
-overall had the best bosses of all the Sonic games
-lock on tech was baller even tho it was a gimmick
-fantastic final space boss battle with Sonic flying off into the sunset with tails and Sega ending the series on a high note never to make another Sonic game again.... ;_;

3&K is full of poor design choices though

>Knuckles has different routes and bosses from Sonic/Tails

This is cool, but it only happens a few times, most of the bosses are the same, only real difference is that robotnik is replaced by a robo-robotnik with Knuckles (I think there's still a glitch somewhere that makes Robotnik appear instead of his robot).

>best music in the franchise thanks to MJ

The Dreams Comes True guy from 1 and 2 wrote most of the most iconic music in the franchise though.

maybe not "full of", but it's not perfect either. Mushroom hill has a lot of redundant, irrelevant paths for the sole purpose of hiding bonus rings, it feels more like a blue sphere hub than a real zone, Sonic CD did exploration much better than this.

How I would rank the Sonic games I have played:
Sonic The Hedgehog>Sonic CD>Sonic 2>Sonic Adventure>Sonic 3>& Knuckles>Sonic 3 & Knuckles

This is how the ranking goes when you've already played them all and you don't have much time to replay games anymore. StH is the only one I ever have the feeling of wanting to play again.

No, maybe Sonic 2 is better even if I don't want to play it. Sonic 2 might be the best.

That was the first Genesis Sonic I got(played master system versions first, 1 and 2 gen). But when I played 3 and played both games together it was the point S3&K would turn to be my most played game ever. So yes, it is my fav, but Sonic CD Remake really got near that in a different way.

The snowboard? Sure, but is short as hell. If people complain about that then they should complain about the mandatory flying level in Sonic 2 where you can't skip and you will always waste 2 minutes on that

I could pound through a Sonic game in roughly 35-40 minutes these days, without loss of life at that, but when I was a kid, these games were hard as dick to me, at least until I reached some of the later stages. I was starting to get good before I got rid of my Sega, but I never did quite beat them until I had the various games on the PC via Smash Pack and S&K collection.

I also know a few people who are fantastic with literally everything else but Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, like bullet hell shmups, and Contra, so as far as I'm concerned, I got my money's worth out of both of these games with the sheer amount of entertainment I had just trying to reach the end of the game the first 12 times or so.

Marble Garden is tedious. The spin platforms are not fun to use and feel sketchy, and they're mandatory to get through certain areas, several times.
The purple faces on the wall that need to be hit 3 times in the eye to open the path are tedious, you have to wait until their hitbox stops blinking. As well as other little details like having to spindash in those wheel things in order for new platforms to appear and get through, etc, etc.
