3692917 No.3692917 [Reply] [Original]

This collection pisses me off. It's so lazy and half assed. It could have been GREAT. They could have rebuilt all the games using MM9's engine. Instead it's just lazy emulation. A god damn NES emulator and roms and it's only the first six games. It's not even the entire classic series. That you pay 20 dollars for. They could have even done something neat like rebuild MM7-8 in the MM9 engine and include both versions of the games.

>>3692917

Oh does MM3 have slowdown in it? If they're doing emulation at least tell me they removed sprite fliker and overclocked the CPU.

Because the PS/PS2/NGC ports have zero slowdown.

Pretty sure they were trying to be authentic to how it actually runs on an NES. I'm glad they kept everything as is, the challenges are enough extra content IMO.

>> No.3693350

>>3692917
It's actually not lazy, from a programming perspective. The developers re-compiled the games into C so they could avoid Nintendo copyright and add in extras like the challenge mode. It's a clever way of getting old games to run on modern platforms. It also includes the Collected Works content. I do wish they added an option to remove slowdown/sprite flicker. I own the series in multiple ways so I have no interest in the game, but as far as retro compilations go this gen, it's probably second best after Rare Replay. Also this game wasn't Capcom's creation, Iron Galaxy approached them with the idea and a build.

You know what really takes a piss? The fucking challenges. They had one glimmer of potential for this collection to separate itself from the previous collection. And what do we get... some random strings of different game segments (i.e. emulator save states)thrown together by a dev over a weekend. I remember going through the same segments like half a dozen times throughout the challenge list. And there was no variety either. Just "do x as quick as possible". God dammit.

IMO the only good retro-ports I've seen so far are the Namco Arcade classics and Atari Vault.

The former are the best IMO, Atari Vault is pretty fantastic but it has minor issues like not allowing windowed mode without some fucking around, and having an intro that's far too long.

And honestly I wish every single retro-game re-release would allow me to have all the games listed individually on my Steam library so I could launch them directly, SNK did a relatively good job with theirs. All of these include online functions and some improvements. But the SNK ones are retarded expensive desu.

I've been using Higan to emulate, and I assume that every frame rate drop is an emulated frame rate drop.

Porting and manipulating the games in C to create additional modes/features is way easier than playing around with Assembly code. They could have done more with the technology, sure, but I find it hard to complain about a solid collection of games for $15, or $7.50 right now. Anniversary Collection a few gens ago did have more games, but also launched a higher price ($30, higher now with inflation) with inaccurate emulation.

I think it's only the Gamecube version that's crappy like that. I have the PS2 version and it's generally solid with one exception; MM7 is unbeatable because on that giant skull boss before Wily the poor PS2 can't seem to handle all that crap on the screen. There's nothing "new" about them, challenges are just random level segments taken as is from the main games and strung together.

The boss rushes are kinda cool (if I'm not mistaken, last challenge is a full boss rush from all 6 games) and there's your usual medal system to rank you depending on your overall time, but if you were expecting something cool like fighting MM5 enemies in MM3 with MM2 weapons, then yeah, it's nothing like that.

Despite technical complaints I think it's a pretty solid collection. I have it on the 3ds and I'm just glad I have a cart alternative to buying the original 6 NES carts because shit's expensive. If there isn't anything horrible or game breaking about it I can pass it off as a simple re-release. I haven't come across anything differing from the NES games yet. If there's slowdown in some specific area I don't give enough of a fuck.

I'm guessing you haven't paid much attention to the 3DS?
M2's 3D Sega ports are incredible. Literally the only flaw is that all this extra content and shit will be forever locked on a console with a shitty circle pad with a tiny fucking range.
The 3D effect is amazing though. The arcade versions of Space Harrier, After Burner II or Outrun are intense enough as it is, the 3D effect makes it twice as crazy.
