Have you ever seen a youtube poop before? The We are Number One song is basically a victim of that, but with a layer of meta humor on top because the humor comes from the act of editing and not the finished product. It's about defying expectations and creating absurd and original scenarios from the foundation of something that doesn't really "deserve" it. There is a second layer of meta involved in people making videos in response to other videos or building off of other videos, which plays off of youtubes system, where someone who happens to watch the first big edit when it came out will be greeted with more and more increasingly absurd edits in their recommendation bar as time goes on.

It's not post ironic, it's pure ironic humor, people don't actually sit down and laugh their ass off watching the bee movie play at increasingly high speeds, they laugh at the idea that someone actually made the video or that the video is being presented as humor. If it was post ironic, they would genuinely find the concept funny in itself, but that is a fundamental understanding of what's going on and what people see in it.

In big rewards prefer to give a lot of tiny rewards rather than a big one (like make the machine spit 100 health bonus instead of a supercharge)

Skyrim fucked up many things, but at least the level scaling wasn't that brutal. In Oblivion, low levels enemies stop spawning after a while, so you never feel like you're progressing.

But Skyrim is pretty shitty too.

Aside of all those shit choices, I agree 100% with Age of Empires 2, to be fair I never got tired of Aoe2 after all those years, same goes to Doom, Blood and Duke Nukem. In fact, I can't even play it anymore, if I do I may end up playing for over 30 hours without even realizing it.

But for Skyrim. modern map editors have two modes - 2d and 3d. Doom is a ~2d game, so all you really need is a top-down perspective. In the editor, you just draw lines and shapes, place objects and monsters, and use menus to select special functions (doors, elevators, triggers)

then in 3d mode, you can fly around the map and manually place textures and adjust floor heights (all of which you can do in the 2d mode as well)

once you get used to the controls and the lingo/basic technical parts of map making (sectors, linedefs, tags) you'll be making wads in no time.

I start generally by making the start. Sometimes I have idea for layout, but for me, it is generally easier just try out a theme first and then extrapolate from there. Then I start carving me some gameplay ideas and layout 'this sort of encounter could be nice' 'i am just gonna use these monsters' 'no SSG in this map' 'maybe the map should be a ring where you can go it clockwise or counter-clockwise'.

I am really slow mapper, however, and it can cost.
That big castle-map I was making some months ago? I don't think I am gonna release it, since it will take so long to polish it and make it work. I really like the flow of it, though...

Wolf3D ain't bad. It feels really limited in scope nowadays but now and then I pick it up and play a few levels; very good for what it was at the time.

It's usually good to come up with of a basic concept and a theme for a level first. You can start by sketching it out on paper but a simple mental image does fine as well, whichever suits you really.

Some people just wing it which honestly isn't that bad of an idea. I've found that concepts for different room layouts come more naturally this way. Helps a lot if you don't know where to actually start.

I think it's pretty decent for some quick arcade action, picking up a level every other day or so.

Level design is what it is, the game is pretty simplistic so there's only so much you can do.

I had this weird idea... with all these modern sourceports with reduced limitations when it comes to Doom mapping... has anyone ever attempted or actually succeeded in using the shareware maps as a base to combine all 9 maps of the episode into one gigantic map? You could try to form the outer structure of the original maps according to their visualization on the crater intermission screen, and connect the levels with some contrived linear pathways on the surface of the moon. Then of course you'd also have the secret tunnels that connect the Refinery to the Military Base and the base to Command Control. The first problem I can recognize is that it's one music track per map.

Since the shareware maps are basically free game, (pun intended) it would be perfectly legal as well, right?

when an enemy is crushed to death but then revived by an arch-vile the game bugs the fuck out and takes away the revived enemy's collision, meaning they start chasing you through walls and all kinds of trippy shit

When I make a map, I typically have two things in mind when I start - a basic theme, and a setpiece. This setpiece may just be a puzzle, or an encounter, or just a very specific room layout, but it generally sits at the center of the map with the rest of the level branching off from it. For example, the starting area of E1M2 is the sort of thing I'd consider a setpiece. I'm bad at explaining stuff, sorry anon.

From there, I largely improvise, but I'll also cheerfully delete entire areas and redo them using what I learned from the aborted first attempt as a sort of a "test run". I don't really do layout sketches. I probably should, though...

Adding to the idea
