The hack works in SNES9x, you just have to get a new version, since the most popular version (1.53) does not support ROMs over 4MB. The newest version (1.54) does. If it doesn't work in bsnes, make sure you are patching the IPS file to a headered ROM (513 kb)

ZSNES was okay back in the late 90's and early 00's when we played games on our toasters, because ZSNES was literally written in x86 assembly and with as many speed hacks as possible to make it run games at full speed on the shitty PC's we had back then. The code is also a mess because of it. There's literally no reason to use ZSNES in this day and age, unless you're one of those people who can't adapt to change and need to cling to the past like Windows XP users who claim it's still better than 7 or 10.

Even if you give me the "but muh ui and snow effects" run around, ZMZ exists

Funny, because out of all the major SNES emulators, ZSNES' sound quality is noticeably the worst, and if you throw a problematic game at it like Chrono Trigger, it can render some audio SFX as horrible screeches.

Meanwhile, bsnes and SNES9x can take full advantage of MSU-1 hacks that enable CD quality sound:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7U5hJCcTNI

If you want to use ZSNES no matter what I say, that's fine. I just need you to be aware that you're literally using the worst emulator available for the system instead of a better one for absolutely no reason other than nostalgia for a shitty GUI at best.

HEY LISTEN HERE YOU FUCKERS.
If you want to play this shit:
On Snes9x? Then download the newest version (1.54); the most popular version, 1.53, doesn't support ROMs larger than 4MB (this hack is 6MB).
ZSNES? Don't. But since ZSNES users are stubborn fucks, just be aware that there's a chance the hack might crash randomly because your garbage goddamn emulator doesn't have proper SA-1 support.
I'm assuming you won't have problems with more accurate emulators.
It won't work in other emulators if they don't support SA-1 - snes9x for the Wii, as far as I remember, doesn't support it, for instance.
On the SNES? You'll need a flashcart with SA-1 support.

>b-but I patched the .ips and all I get is a black screen!!
You dumb FUCK your ROM is unheadered. You need ROMclean or another similar program to fix your shit. If your ROM is .smc then you don't have to worry about anything. Run your ROM through your program of choice and THEN you patch it.

Lastly, don't choose the third file in the file selection screen, it's buggy and will crash your game and delete the saves on the other files. Stay on the first or on the second one.

I believe the idea of this level was that of "defrosting". If I remember well, there was a section in an ice cave with clouds all around in this one.

Indeed it's pretty neat what people managed to do. Makes me want to create my own stages, if it wasn't so hard to mod. But if I learned anything, is that making stages isn't just filling it with enemies to call it a day. That's what make Mario Maker stages so bad. Intelligent stage design is hard and even among the stages from this rom there are many at fault. Why do the modders have such a hard on for Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother?

I do love the daring ideas people were free to go on, though. Many things would never get a chance in official games.

They were just put into layer 1 here.
All the faces are just assorted sprite graphics placed into the object graphic slots.

The scrolling is a vanilla SMW thing, as in it appears in the game you can play on your SNES.

Keeping all that in mind, how is that not vanilla? A lot of other stages break the vanilla definition a lot more, although nobody actually really gives a fuck about these definitions nowadays.
Just think of this contest/collaboration as a challenge with made up rules originating from an ACTUAL vanilla contest.

I don't see a direct correlation between the popularity show ingame and the quality of the stages.

Best are good, but there are stages scattered in the rest of the game which I found more deserving of a top 10. The opposite is true too, were it not for Worst having unfinished crazy levels, some stages of the rest of the game would deserve to be there.

Nice paranoia fampai but the judges weren't allowed to know who made what specifically to prevent bias. You can be as anal and melodramatic ("insult to romhacks", really) as you want about this issue, but people want cool overworld maps, and it wouldn't even have been possible to fit all submitted levels into one hack this time if it weren't for the chip, so it won't be dropped anytime soon.

The most that could be done, which is something I'd find perfectly valid, is to disallow the use of the chip during the design of the levels themselves; that way, the levels would still be vanilla -- which is the whole point -- while the compilation hack itself wouldn't -- which has always been and absolutely must be the case, considering the fact that things like judge rankings, completion tracking, and even compiling the levels into one ROM require custom code and whatnot, and also that the overworld maps haven't ever been vanilla so it's perfectly acceptable to use SA-1 for their sake.

>> No.3695953

>>3695905
But since they use the SA-1 I can't play it. This romhack is literally completely worthless if it can't be played using a regular flashcart. I'd rather it be split into two ROMs if they can't fit it on 1 without a chip. I'm not going to rage on the SMWC forum about it, but it's a huge disappointment that the SMW romhacking community are OK with making romhacks that you're expected to use an emulator to play.

>> No.3696105

>>3695953
I can definetely see your point, but I can't help but think you shouldn't blame the website for the flashcart manufacturers' inability to make SA-1 compatible stuff.
Don't get me wrong, I'd agree 100% with you if it was something like the MSU-1 which isn't even real and whose enhancements are pretty superfluous, but the SA-1 was an actual chip used in actual games by actual developers during the SNES's lifecycle.
I mean, my point here is that, though it's a sad thing that you can't play romhacks on a flashcart, this issue isn't at all exclusive to romhacks as plenty of games used the SA-1 and those are just as unplayable (RIP Super Mario RPG).

>> No.3696314

>>3695953
You're not expected to use an emulator to play. Nor are you expected to use a flashcart. What you need is a flashcart with the chip, so yes, it is playable. The problem is you don't have it. Be disappointed with that.

It really doesn't, you have absolutely no idea how people work. I mean, I'm not a psychologist but it's not that hard to realize that people won't want to design levels if there's an enormous chance no one will play them as they won't be part of a greater whole, people won't want to compile just 10 levels into one ROM, people won't want to design a single map, and people won't want to play a hack consisting of 10 levels and nothing else.

You say that without realizing the irony of your statement. If you know that the level you make might not make the final cut for the romhack, it gives you an incentive to make a better level than anyone else. If you know that every level is going to be put in no matter what, there's no incentive to make a good level.

>people won't want to compile just 10 levels into one ROM, people won't want to design a single map, and people won't want to play a hack consisting of 10 levels and nothing else.
Defining a hard limit of number of levels that are accepted would improve the hack considerably by weeding out the worst levels that nobody wants to play anyway. This hack's approach is to put EVERY level in, regardless of whether people wanted to play it or not. It's always better to be concise than it is to be verbose.

Finished everything today.

Gotta admit, the hack was pretty good. Considering the big number of stages and that they supposedly left none out as discussed ITT, it's a given there's no abundance of shitty stages. Even the ones from Worst world aren't that bad, having their own charm in their unfinished weird designs. The number of worlds is big and there is great variety in stages.

I do think there was overruse of assets, though. At some point I was rolling my eyes everytime a Chargin Chuck appeared in another stage. Footballs, the annoying baseballs, Flyin Brothers throwing hammers, those flowers spitting out red dots... Many edittors attributed a "theme" to their stages, but they broke it unapologetically just to bring out one those over used enemies.
Some stages were also too hard, and I'm not talking about the ones with a convenient alternative exit at the beginning. Sure they were made without requirement of exploits like walljumps and shit you see in TAS, but I can only imagine how infuriating they'd be demanding frame perfect jumps and without quicksaves.

Overall it's pretty satisfying. My favorite stages are scattered among the game, the top 10 Best may not necessarily be one's favorites. I loved the aesthetic work done in many of them and the creativity isn't restricted to that.

The color changing animation is done in the same way as the yoshi coin animation. The only things changed are the specific colors and the number of frames before the animation loops.

Editing the tiles to remove details would have caused the level to be disqualified. What's more likely is that the other colors those tiles used in the level palette were set to black so you can only see the outline against the background.

I think what some people are forgetting (or are just unaware of) is that the VLDCs aren't done with the intent of making a collaboration hack. It's just "submit a level, and at the end they all get judged and ranked."
And then someone might volunteer later to throw them all into a hack. This was the case with the last three contests (7th, 8th, 9th, and one was made later for the 1st.)

That's why there's no hard limit and every level is included.
