Why does this game get such a bad rep? I thought it was quite good.

>> No.3669106

Because we didn't get Ed Kann's original version.

>> No.3669126

>>3669102
Because people expected it to be Secret of Mana 2. I thought the game was solid.

>> No.3669149

I absolutely love it, worse part is the dialogues and the alchemy system being unbalanced
I think the game could be much much better if those things were fixed

>> No.3669190

I was expecting it to feel like SoM but only just played similarly. It felt very American. I liked the soundtrack and the feeling of isolation in some parts. I thought it was cool how the dog transformed in different stages.

>> No.3669234

Discovered this recently; if you use a walk through walls code in the prologue you can kill Caltron in one hit, its kinda funny, also exit to omnitopia and enter the final boss room

You don't like the dialogue? that's some of the best part of the game! From Tiny acknowledging he speaks in incomplete sentences, to the hero dropping a reference to a cheesy B-movie he's seen every 10 minutes, there's so many great, funny lines.

>> No.3669370

>>3669353
Mostly the MC dialogue is silly and there are too many plotholes that could be easily fixed.
I guess I want a more serious version of the game

For me, The dungeon are all shitty maze and the alchemy system is kinda annoying and useless except for cure.

I still think is a ok game, worth a shot

I remember ruining the cartridge I rented from the game store, it was a really buggy game.

Once during a fight I did some spell combination that brought up the save game menu and screwed up the colors which I thought was weird. I saved the game in an empty slot and it crashed the SNES, after resetting it never got past the intro scene, returned the game and pretended like nothing happened.

Because people think that we got SoE instead of SD3. Personally, I love SoE. The cheesy dialog, self-referential humor, atmosphere and fantastic soundtrack.

What I don't like is that alchemy and the weapon leveling system could have been handled better, maybe some kind of EXP multiplier for weapon successors if you maxed out the last one. I'm not sure how the alchemy system could be overhauled. Maybe some kind of element level as opposed to spell level?

I know there's a hack that handles the weapon leveling issue but it makes it a bit too easy. Also, the game needs balancing as it's already pretty easy. It's also too short, and there's no sidequests to speak of. I feel like a whole world could have been thrown in.

I think an important reason of dislike for this game was the balancing was a bit whack. The first boss in the prehistoric era was tough to beat for many people. Once you get the hang of things the game becomes significantly easier though

You can easily tell from any screenshot where they obviously tried to display the games as good as they thought possible that scanlines were never a design factor.

Furthermore, nobody who cares about the games gives a flying fuck, only emulation autists.

SoE is a flawed, imperfect masterpiece.
If the game had been better balanced (not getting super OPed and loosing the thread of the story near the endgame, had better level and difficulty progression, had some actual challenging bosses besides Verminator, and fleshed out all the obviously unfinished portions or the game (specifically the space station and the other island you can find flying around in Mode 7)), and possibly adding some side quests and more character development, it would be an easy 99/100
The music is perfect, fittingly atmospheric and moody.
Great graphics, level design that made you feel like you had been dropped into a fantasy book.
Combat (when it actually worked) was satisfying in a way not even Secret of Mana could convey.
SoE had that special quality that always made you want to look around the next corner to see what was next.
Alas but it's still a fantastic game. Just wish the game had been tidied up a bit more, bugs cleared up, and expanded just that little bit.

>> No.3672276

Only legitimate complaint was that it wasn't two player, especially since me and a friend had just coop through secret of mana. We ended up just passing the controler so it wasn't that bad.

>>3671571
God damn I remember that rat boss and some flying boss in the swamp area being a pain in the ass.

Also, I kept getting lost through most of the game and it was even worse in the forest. It was the first time I actually went on the internet to find a faq that had an ascii map.

It's a stupid myth. If you google the guy's name the only thing that pops up is the article that started the myth to begin with.

>> No.3672459

I played it first, so Secret of Mana is the "rip-off" to me. I still enjoy it more than Mana, but I liked Mana's multiplayer.

>> No.3672523

It's boring and the system is more fucked than either Mana games. I laugh when people say SD3's system is clunky but then defend and praise this, which was way clunkier and slower.

The story is all style and no substance. Its one of the most boring stories ive ever seen in an RPG despite being supposedly quirky. It just comes off lame and lifeless for most of it. I literally care about no one or nothing in it except the dog.

I just wish it had multiplayer. That was what hurt the most about never getting SoM2/SD3. My favorite part of SoM was having such a big 3-player adventure.

I really need to go back and give SoE a chance, but back when it came out, I felt like I just wouldn't enjoy a SoM-type game by myself. They probably play differently enough, but that just wasn't what I wanted at the time.

Few things. I'd rather have SD3. It includes shit to SoM's formula that piss me the fuck off. The Alchemy and the weapon system was handled poorly. Damage done to you still has comical stun potential. The OST was good but where it sucks it sucks badly. Can't even play it with my best bud at the time. And then there's the problem with the dungeons themselves. The gameplay balance was also all over the fucking place.

It did make you want to explore shit and the combat wasn't bad, but it has so many flaws that makes it hard to really appreciate it. And as much as I'm ultimately alright with the game, it's a game I couldn't recommend to somebody.
