What's with the retroarch circlejerk?

>> No.3668241

>not turning off hardware bilinear filtering

Retroarch takes effort because the UI is full of submenus upon submenus that don't explain fuck about what they do

It becomes a single smoothly running system once you figure it out, it's pretty cool to be able to emulate multiple systems in one singular UI and a controller-based menu

This. It sounds more like poorfags going "if we force ourselves to put up with configuring through a poorly implemented UI, emulation will be just as valid as the real thing!"

Why people think retroarch is worth it when you can just download another program that instantly works is beyond me. It's like the sushi apprentices in Japan who have to put up with washing rice and chopping vegetables for years before they're even allowed to touch the fish, as if earning it that way is supposed to mean something.

I mostly keep these RA threads filtered. Not sure why this one showed up, unless I haven't worded my filters carefully enough.

you don't have to fiddle with shaders if you don't want to, just read the manual holy fuck, the fucking thing can be configured in 2 minutes. get the fucking core through the "online updater", get the fucking games through the internet, configure the gamepad, the video options if you want to disable blur and here we fucking go and all of that can be done from your fucking couch.

>> No.3669101

And this is why it needs a proper UI, not the consolized shit it has now.

>> No.3669147

So, disabeling bilenear filter will get rid if the 'blurriness' that comes stock with a new install of retroarch?

>> No.3669187

Does anyone else think the new UI is rubbish? I have an old install I use with the old green UI and while it's ugly it works really well and is easy to use.

Having an emulation setup with a good CRT monitor and a Dualshock 1 (most compatible + my favourite D-pad) is the next best thing to real hardware.

I do still use my actual consoles when I get the chance though because I'm very sensitive to input lag for whatever reason.

What the fuck are you guys doing, the best and simplest means of using the program is just loading content (and then picking a core if it autodetects more than onem) by picking a file. There's literally no purpose to using other methods, which should just be removed.

Retroarch question:

When I play zipped ROMs in retroarch, it extracts the ROM to the containing folder, so I have megaman.zip AND megaman.nes, and two copies of every game I play. How do I make retroarch stop doing this?

>> No.3669707

>>3669187
You can switch back to RGUI by changing the menu driver. RGUI is what you need to use on CRTs anyway because XMB doesn't support low resolutions and because XMB's TTF fonts will not scale correctly with superwide modes.

I just maintain a config template for each CRT mode and just switch between them when I want to change resolutions.

>> No.3669713

>>3668729
Uh, most of those standalone emulators are missing critical things like custom resolution support to make them usable for CRTs or don't have the dynamic rate control synchronization so there isn't micro-stutter.

That's why people use it despite an imperfect UI.

>> No.3669717

FYI, the main dev of retroarch is developing a WIMP gui:
https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/tree/master/ui/drivers

Until then, you can use Skeleton Key which addresses most of the issues in this thread and does other cool stuff too.

retroarch is for lazy people who don't know how to organize their own emulator/rom/iso folder structures efficiently and can't be bothered to set up per-game settings for maximum compatibility.

by default, it is the same directory as the ROM

>> No.3669780

>>3669769
Yeah honestly I've found that if you really want to get that easy relaxed console-like emulation experience you set up your roms through steam with Ice so your emulator auto-runs the game. Use big picture mode and it's the exact same experience that retroarch promotes with the added benefit of not being restricted to retroarch.

That STILL does not solve the problem inherent with retroarch. Why is it that every other emulator out there can read zipped ROMs just fine but retroarch can't despite it using those very same emulators?

>> No.3669818

>>3669807
it's reading them just fine. you're just being a bitch. if you can't be bothered to set the cache directory to the temp directory, or can't deal with the fact that it's temporarily extracting a rom, then by all means, use something else. fact is that other emulators ARE often extracting the zip, but use the temp directory by defulat.

>> No.3669830

>>3668235
The UI is pretty simple if you get used to it. It also works the exact same across devices and that's pretty nice. And it can be fully controlled by joystick which is pretty cool.
And when I tried it on windows it eliminated all the screen tearing that I thought happened because my monitor was bad. Also the pixellate shader is all you need, and that's nice since there are a lot of emulators that don't provide such a simple "make all pixels look the exact same size and shape and not blurry as hell" option (I really wish MAME had it).
The only bad thing are those auto generated lists that don't detect all roms unless they come from a specific dump set. Just get used to load the core first and load the games manually.

3670220

I have a new pi and retropie install. I went to enable sahders and there were none.

I checked the retroarch.cfg and the path to shaders was blank.

Isn't this normally set by default on a new install? I checked a sample dfg file on the wiki and it shows the path set.

Did I fuck something up during install or miss a step? ican type in a new path, but I am worried something else is fucked.

Pic related is what it should be. mine is blank.

I watched some videos of pi specific shaders and they look decent (as far as you can see from a video). Frame rate was still good on most capcom arcade games.
