How would you rank the Gradius games, /vr/?

Any good Gradius-style homebrew out there?

Haven't seen a thread like this before. That's a tough question, especially considering the remakes and enhanced ports. Instead of ranking both the remakes and the originals, I'll just rank the remakes where I feel they were a substantial improvement.

Nemesis '90 Kai (X68k) > Gradius II (arcade) > Gradius (PCE) > Gradius III (arcade) > Gradius Gaiden > Nemesis 3 (MSX) > Gradius Galaxies > Gradius ReBirth (Wii)

It would be hard to place the Game Boy monochrome titles. The first one is essentially a toned down remake of Gradius, and the second is considerably short. I still enjoyed them.

Haven't played Gradius IV yet, and I've barely touched Gradius V. Can't really rank those.

Don't really care about ranking all of them, but Gradius II and Gradius Gaiden are definitely the top two. Gradius II's opening level and soundtrack are some of the hypest first levels ever.

Now that you mention it, I think the decision in Gradius II to have the first level be filled with huge, detailed, and graphically striking obstacles and enemies was a good one, especially given that it was an arcade game. It really captures your attention and makes you feel like a badass right from the get go as opposed to making a more expected level 1 with a lot of little ship enemies as your primary foes.

And honestly it's also quite good from a gameplay standpoint, especially on the later loops where the dragon spawn gets crazy and you are always on your toes, it's pretty easy to die if you fuck up but recovery is always possible there.

set up my nes and play this last night, can only get to level 3 though.

Is there a 30 life code for the pal release of gradius on nes?

>> No.3664876

>>3664806
The Konami code is used to give your ship all upgrades, but it only works once per play session. Life Force used the Konami code for the 30 lives however.

Mainline games only:

2>4>3>1>5

Nemesis and Parodius are also great side series.
