The shotgun. It's the bread and butter, it's accurate even at long range, and in Doom, the damage depends on how many pellets hits the enemy, so with large enemies like the cacodemon, you can almost sniper them with the shotgun.

Late response but whatever. I too disable the MP weapons but only because they're effectively inventory bloat. In FPS that allow you to carry many weapons, you need to give them all a niche and thus adding in too many guns generally creates a shitload of needless overlap.

One of few Doom mods where I can give 'featuring a shitload of weapons' a pass would be DRLA because it actually imposes a reasonable carry limit.

Doom Delta is pretty fun, if not horribly unfinished. It's a really nice alternate take on the typical Doom Alpha projects.

Playing with the retroshader and the paletted tonemap really makes it feel authentic. I can't believe torrid's autism actually was useful for something.

Fire rate is exactly the same, frame by frame (I know 'cause I ripped it - 33 frames), and while you can kill and imp in one shot in Doom, nuDoom ones need 2 shots, mostly because of a retarded glorykill bullshit.

It is fun. The only beef I have with it is that you have to unlock the secondary fire for your weapons and some of them are really overpowered compared to the normal fire, you have some stupid challenges that feel like a pain in the ass, and there are too many mancubus and they're beefy as fuck (on top of being resistant to bullets).

Other than that, if you can ignore the challenge and just shoot things in the face, it's really fun. DOOM uses a system where monsters get damaged, so if you shoot a hell knight in the face with a two-barrelled shotgun, his face turns into a bloody mess. You almost wonder why it doesn't pass out from the pain.
The Glory Kills get repetitive quickly, but are thankfully extremely quick.
And the two parts I really like but I feel aren't used properly : the less HP you have, the more potent healing items (that you get from Glory Kills) are, and you can use the chainsaw to get ammo : if a monster is killed with the chainsaw (one-hit kill, by the way), then it drops ammos for all your weapons. Usually enough to refill all your weapons.
The chainsaw needs fuel to operate, so it's mostly a game of trading fuel to get ammo, and you often want to use the chainsaw on weak enemies (since tougher enemies require more fuel).

I just assembled my new right last night, and d44m has been the first thing I've played. It's honestly a lot of fun if not particularly challenging in combat. I'm at "the foundry" level and it has some of the better level design I've seen in a long time. Looks gorgeous and is quite non-linear. Many secrets on every level which I really appreciate.

One nitpick is that the chiaroscuro lighting style makes it slightly hard for me to navigate and get a sense of my surroundings.

no, I can *guarantee* you that this is indeed not the case. why would it not, given how imps have less HP than former humans? headshots are a thing too, and they're quite handy when fighting monsters.

also imps and soldiers will only die from a charged shot if and only if it's from a fully upgraded pistol. a non upgraded pistol charged shot to the head is prone to make imps falter, THEN you can finish it off with a glory kill. and you're still gonna need two shotgun blasts to off a soldier afterwards.

I played through it. Not bad if it's your first map. Needed an SSG somewhere before the Spider Mastermind fight I think, getting through those Arachnotrons and then the Mastermind with only the shotgun and chaingun was really tedious. The Revenant ambush after that was well-executed, though. I was a bit lost after getting the red key until I tried hitting the first switch in the map again. Should probably have a second switch there instead.

If you hit the button that opens the medikit hallway near the cyberdemon arena a second time, this happens. Presumably these would be HOMs in software. Other than this, the map was technically sound. Texture alignment and selection could use improvement, but nothing was really offensive.

Hitting the switch a second time to open up the path to the cyberdemon is meant to be tricky like that. Were you really stuck? After you come through the passage from the red door you are looking directly at that switch, and the light is turned on. But I could make it more obvious.

I played in stable GZDoom. No gameplay mods, just my custom HUD.

I wasn't stuck for very long, but my first expectation was that the path forward would already be opened since that's how the rest of the map had played out up to that point.

I thought fighting the spiders was fun with the shotgun and chaingun because it required patience. Fighting the barons at the end is also kind of interesting because they can actually chase you into the medikit corridor and do all sorts of stuff. You can use rockets on them but there's not quite enough. I might have a little bit too much plasma, I wanted to make sure there was enough for the cyberdemon. I actually had trouble killing the cyberdemon when I first put him in that area.

Difficulty was decent overall, but you really get shafted if you don't find the chaingunners first. My first attempt had me running around desperately searching for a weapon and only finding more bullets for my useless pistol before getting killed by the first revenant. I feel like the shotgun should be introduced a bit earlier. Not immediately, but maybe just before or after the chaingunners? Using only the chaingun for so long in the beginning wasn't too exciting, either, having another viable weapon early on would be nice.

Haha, yeah well that's the only branching path in the beginning. You either go to the room with the cacodemons or you go to the chaingunners. If you enter the cacodemon room with only a pistol I expected you to turn around and check out the other passage.

And I deliberately make you wait for the shotgun, so you have to take out the chaingunners with the pistol.

When you finally find the shotgun, it's the zombie sergeants who have them, but they are on the other side of a chasm so you can't pick up their guns. But then when you run from the lost souls you find a shotgun at last.

So that was a deliberate tease :).

I didn't realise someone would make it all the way to the first revenant with only a pistol. I might need to do something about that. I thought you would get stopped in the cacodemon room, but I suppose the elevator is fairly obvious to get out of there.

Seriously, Dusk just looks messy because it's mixing too many sources of inspiration together, and not all of them mix well together. You can do non-linear/interconnected layouts in a shooter without having the player wander your level aimlessly. It requires talent, iterations and lots of playtesting. Quake's E1M5 is a good example of a non-linear level. You can choose several paths and obtain the two keys in whichever order you desire. A perfect example of interconnection would be E3M5, still from Quake, with the layout looping on itself several times while never feeling confusing.

That said Hexen is NOT how you make non-linear and interconnected maps. Level design in this game is total crap and drags it all down.

The SAW from Opposing Force is incredibly satisfying to fire, and just demolishes Shock Troopers. Even has the little belt pieces coming off the ejected casings, which I've never seen in any other game ever.

Well, it is Rainbow Six inspired after all. I thought having no weapon model sucks but playing Ghost Recon made me realize that a weapon icon and unique weapon sounds are all I need. At least this should allow the modder to have the guns he wants instead of having to be restricted to what sprites are available and having to worry about sprite consistency.

I haven't played the mod yet but I think what it would need is a weapon inventory limit system like RGA2's and an accurate copy of the bullet deviation (cone of fire) behavior from the RS games, along with a dynamic crosshair.

It's a bit more complicated but not much. You can either run a command prompt in the folder where Quakespasm is located by Shift+Right Clicking in the window and clicking on the option, then typing quakespasm -game (folder of the mod/map pack you want to run)

There's also a program called Quake Injector which does everything for you, but it being a Java program might be a deal breaker.

The map is a remake of Quake's Castle of the Damned, I tested with gzdoom and zandronum in opengl. HNTR uses the original thing placement and HMP/UV use new placements. Jumping is allowed and needed for a few items. I also recommend turning off infinite height actors (otherwise you could get stuck underneath monsters on a 3d floor) and perhaps use freelook as well.

The drum is 6 copies of a tiny bit of the mancubus' gun, with a translation. The back of the drum (close to the hand) is a bit of the rocket launcher's barrel. In front of the drum is a tiny bit of the plasma barrel, and the actual barrel is from a super shotgun reload animation.

it's different ways of making a widescreen aspect ratio out of a more squared image.

Horz+ is adding horizontal details to the sides of the image

Vert- is removing otherwise rendered things from the top and bottom of the screen

both result in an image that's 16:9, but in games, the FOV is drastically different depending on the method.

on a side note, widescreen versions of movies made for something closer to a 4:3 ratio use vert-, because otherwise they'd have to create new content to fill the sides.

Idea I had for a map.
Player gets choice of 3 teleporters, each of which leads to a distinct area with a cardkey and a teleporter to a new area.
That new area contains teleporters to three new areas (again with a cardkey and teleporter onwards) but has key doors so you can't go get a second blue key.
Repeat one last time for the third card key, then get teleported the final area.

This way there'd be six paths through the level, so you could pick and choose your route.

I had the same idea for a teleporter-puzzle map where the small room you teleport in is identical to the one you just teleported from, just with subtle enough differences that you can keep track of where you're at if you have a good idea. Also berserk packs and imps for melee action.
