Making GZdoom and Zandronum compatible versions with unique featues would be a massive undertaking. Not to mention I don't like the idea of making content exclusive for one version or the other, that doesn't seem fair to people.

The best way to start making mods would be to just pick up SLAD3 and start playing around with the DECORATE files. I started with picking up random weapons from realm667 and started editing them, and making a full weaponset from that

Still wish I knew how custom pointers worked, because a buttload of invisible warping actors for measuring, collision etc. would be very useful later on.

I'm curious; how old were you anons when you first played Doom, and what version/port/etc did you first play on? You can also mention what your first shooter game was in general.

I first played Doom on the XBLA port when I was maybe twelve or so, it was a game I had always heard about but had never truly seen before due to most of my childhood years being spent playing older systems like the SNES or PS1. At the time, the only experiences with FPS games I had were playing Wolf3D on the 3DO as a young child (which was my first FPS) and playing Half-Life 2 about a year prior, but I had a blast playing the game and was mesmerized by its gameplay and environments.
Fast forward about a year and I found Doom 2 on Steam, played it through, then another year later I found out about modern source ports and replayed the games again, and slowly got more and more invested into map making and the mod scene. Doom had me hooked by the very first few levels, hooked harder than anything else, and I've loved it ever since. Even two decades later, you still hear about people getting hooked on Doom after playing it for the first time.

Travail is pretty good, but I still like the vanilla levels better. Travail has higher difficulty but the level flow is more mundane and linear than the original levels. I think the only custom episode that is on par with Quake's original episodes is Beyond Belief. czg03 and Metal Monstrosity are the best levels I've ever played though.

When I was young I played Shareware Doom because that shit was everywhere (bundled with a guidebook for the game even) and later a friend dropped off the registered version floppies, but it ran like shit on the 386sx so I couldn't really get into it until later on the 486, I later bought Doom II and for all its problems loved it and learned the majority of the game by heart (though there are some secrets I'm sure I missed, too).

I made one or two maps for the game and futzed around with DEHACKED to make the rapid-fire shotgun mod that's everyone's first dehacked project, I'm sad that I accidentally overwrote the map file at some point (keep organized backups, everyone) but it helped me ease into knowing how to make a map for Dump 3, though I avoided most of the cooler sourceport shit like triggers, scripts and slopes that we have now.

UT99 I got with a SB Live X-Gamer along with Thief II and Deus Ex I think? Best fucking game pack in deal ever. Picked up UT2003 and UT2004 off the strength of UT and enjoyed em too.

Download Doom II from the OP or buy it from Steam or gog.com if you wanna spend some money and then download Zandronum (for multiplayer) or GZDoom for singleplayer and drag the brutal doom file into gzdoom.exe and...

Man, you know, especially for someone not computer literate, getting a doom sourceport up and running right is kind of a pain in the ass.

I think of it as a ever so slightly updated version of doom's gameplay with a grittier, darker look to it that is pleasant to look at.

the added verticality works wonders with it, there's nothing quite like rocket jumping to an upper ledge with a pentagram of protection, taking out your super nailgun, blasting away and bunnyhopping off there. moving around the maps feels fun, and the weapons feel pretty satisfying to use. bouncing off grenades are great, the shotguns are versatile and reliable, but the rocket launcher is the real deal.

my advice would be to play it as fast as you can, quake becomes really tedious when you don't take advantage of your mobility I find.

It's basically just Doom in full 3D with verticality and jumping plus a darker gothic aesthetic, but the enemies are way more bullet spongy and you have shit like those blob fuckers that explode on you. I bet back when it was released a couple months after Duke 3D people were saying it was too brown and boring compared to Duke's colorful "realistic" locals and Duke himself being more of a "character" compared to Ranger. It's multiplayer was the thing that saved it from being beaten by Duke.

Only sourceport other than Redux is SWP, but it's kinda glitchy. One of the programmers of EDuke32 has been working on updates for SWP though and I haven't tried that, so maybe google it, though I'm not even sure he released those updates outside of forums.

My first DOOM was Ultimate DOOM, I think I was twelve or thirteen at the time--I'm in my mid-thirties now, so we're talking 20+ years ago. I got DOOM II soon after for Christmas that year, along with Heretic: Shadows of the Serpent Riders, Rise of the Triad: Dark War, and probably a bunch of other games. I played a lot of PC first-person shooters in the '90s.

Most recently I bought both of the old DOOM games for my Xbox One when they went on sale for $1.64 apiece a week ago or so. Been having fun playing through them again; I honestly enjoy them more than most modern shooters.

IIRC Doom '16 creators took main inspiration from Serious Sam 3 melee finishers. SS3 finishers were also demonstrated before BD's first release, and were done better in both cases.

Honestly, this is what bugs me the most about the entire ordeal.

The biggest thing about DoomRL is that it has a Kickstarter for a different project somewhat vaguely related to Doom. An off-brand Doom. The Not-Doom.
Is it questionable that he uses DoomRL to promote it? Kind of. But it's Not Doom. And the Doom project itself is not getting anything.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Mark is making money off many unaltered Doom assets in his mods. Hell, he just "recreated" (using the term VERY fucking loosely) the entirety of Doom 64, a sold game, for free distribution.

I'm not sure whether to be sad, annoyed, or confused.

I always thought Quake 2 wasn't enough of a technical jump from Quake 1... It's not as fun imo either. It's not a bad game, just not as solid as Q1 I guess.

You should check out Metal Arms: A Glitch in the System. It's a great game, and all of the robots have limbs that can be "disabled" but still able to shoot, ie shooting a Titan's arms until they loosely wiggle around and fire in random directions until they're totally blown off.

I'll admit that the combat in Morrowind has aged abysmally, I'd tolerate it back in the day, but I went back recently and it's just kind of unbearable.

I really like the levelling system though, and the world and writing is some of the best Bethesda have ever done.

Nope. The triple gatling's a chaingun replacement.
It actually does pretty low damage, it just shoots pretty quickly and pretty accurately.

Lately I've been experimenting with how best to replicate the Chaingun burst fire function, because that thing is super-useful.
I'm thinking that as you hold down fire, you rack up an inventory item over time, letting go and not firing slowly decreases the item bit by bit--your accuracy is based entirely on the presence of this item. If you space out your shots, and just tap fire, it's accurate and stable. If you just mash down W+M1, then you get the full spray.
