You'd be better off with a PSP, Dingoo, 3DS, or Smarphone + Controller in my opinion.

I was literally just playing mine 5 minutes ago lol. I think they are cool as shit. if you have other people always hoggin ur tv or if you just get the urge to play for a bit they are great. Makes it really easy to test games and stuff too.
Some weird things about it are if you actually hook it up to the tv to use as a console they have really good sound quality.
People mod the fuck out of these things too. But if u came across a mint one I would leave it stock. Buy a fucked up one if you want to mod it. Sega only made 1 million of these things as opposed to 40million plus genesis's/megadrive. So for every 40 consoles u see in the wild there is one nomad which is kinda crazy.
If you came across one for a good price and you like sega games I'd pick it up. Seems like these things keep going up in price every couple months.

Compared to my gameboy dmg/pocket/color or game gear not at all.
Compared to my cell phone and other new shit yeah.
It's not bad. Just a 90's LCD.
Some writing is hard to read on the screen and in some games it can be hard to see small things like enemy bullets.

It's literally the best Genesis. I got one with a brand new LCD. Looks way better than the original screen. And besides that, is has the best audio and video of any Genesis I've used, when connected to a TV.

It also did the "home console that you can disconnect and take with you" two decades before the Switch.

Ohh it is, that's why I say it's a cute collector's item. Screen is kind of nice, and it's fun to see actual carts running on it. But if you try to actually use it portable it eats batteries like candy and there were a few times trying to play it on road trips that bumps in the road would jostle enough to fuck it up.

So like I say, I like and am glad I have it. Back when it was new and options were limited it was more exciting. But for practical purposes these days playing retro on the go I virtually always use a PSP or 3DS these days.

It would be awesome if some people made a few specialized carts for it!

Ideally, just one, a smaller flash cart.

But realistically, a multicart ... that is smaller than normal carts. Along with modern rechargeables, it would make this thing better than ever!
