First shooter I ever played back when I was a kid. Still in my top 10
UT2004 and UT3 are also really great. I haven't gotten much into Unreal and Unreal 2 but I plan to sometime.
An overall stellar game series and I've recently been playing the fuck out of the pre alpha Unreal Tournament that is out FOR FREE.

Hard to compare the two. One was a superb singleplayer game with a tacked on multiplayer component. The other was one of the greatest competitive shooters of all time. They really feel like two halves of a whole, rather than separate things to compare against eachother.

That being said, I do go back to Unreal more often than I fire up UT. This is mostly just my preference for singleplayer games nowdays though.

GOG's UT release is okay, you just need to get two additional things. It's the GOTY release which means it's missing Bonus Pack 4. And you may have issues with the default renderers in which case you'll have to get the enhanced OpenGL renderer. Both those things can be found in the pastebin in the OP.

we were struggling on populating the servers so I carried them by the hand (I think the last serious tournament we organized was an UT2004 CTF 5vs5 in November 2007, there were copious amounts of players on the servers but when UT3 came out it was an utter disappointment and everything went down hill since), I had to set a date and later drag the 90% of them that didn't read the post or forgot that we were about to play contacting them by fb/steam/whatsapp/etc... this was this way for years... I think we accorded to play AS or ONS, I don't remember... the thing is we had 3 UT2004 servers and we were joining Server One and this BR entered Server Two and dragged half of the players with him so I shut off the server and he got mad at me so I got mad with the entire player base, I was tired of babysit them, they averaged 30 years old but behaved like 12

I want to note that the original admin wanted to shut down everything when UT3 came out, that game was THAT bad

I don't want to sound like an ass but after 15 years running a community with servers and organizing tournaments (among others the wcg 2004) I think I know something about the situation on this side of the planet

the few people left on ut99 (the one you see on the videos) used to gather on the ts of global unreal and used to play pugs in america, this ended two years ago, they moved to fucking wow

as I stated in my earlier post, the few people left on ut2k4. I had to run behind them to play a ca 4on4 at most (not even tdm)

ut3 was always dead and there was one dude ("Dela") that ran some servers and scared the few people away either destroying newbies 40 - 0 or banning the ones that win over him

there is an unreal tournament alpha server in argentina (ran by the same UT3 idiot) that keeps doing the same and an official one on brazil that is always empty and on both of them you can only expect to play a duel at most

unreal tournament is dead in southamerica, is not that I like it that way or something, I'd like to play some ut2k4, I can't even play in america anymore, the only server where I could barely play put a 160 ping limit (combowhore)

The only ones I've played are UT99, UT2004 and UT3. My ranking would be: UT99 > UT3 > UT2004

I am not a fan of dodge jumping and the spacious maps that are designed to accommodate it so I dislike UT2004. UT3 on the other hand is actually quite similar to UT99 but the latter is still vastly superior for having a shitload more maps, faster and more frenetic gameplay, arguably better bots (inferior at item control and 1v1 but better at combat in general), a better aesthetic, better music, and for having Assault and Domination. I think UT3's Warfare and Greed modes are excellent as well, but I really, really like Domination.

Then again, it's been a whole lot of time since the last time I played to UT99, what are some maps that could be great for an 8-player carnage? I'll try to check the game's maps, but having some recommendation on your personal favorite 8 player maps would be nice. I've been thinking of putting maps like morpheus and deck 16 II already, but having other player's inputs would be better.

The Assault riffle was meant to be used in a similar manner the the mini-gun, to finish off players that you know have very low health, it can be very useful.

On the other hand the enforcer, minigun and Sniper from UT99 were extremely overpowered and would give a ridiculous advantage to whoever has it over who does not, weapons in UT2k4 are way more balanced, if you are a fucking noob mini-gun spammer in UT2k4 you would have no chance against a skilled player, in UT99 is way more annoying.

For me the problem was epic games, it took a lot to make a sequel. And when they did, they preferred to listen to the Marketing department instead of the community.
The result was a game for consoles, with a delayed release and hurried at the same time, full of bugs, without arms balance, without competitive maps and without an acceptable net code. To them it took a year of patches, to make a game that can be executed. By that time the community was already divided between those who wanted something new and competitive, and among those who saw that the new was a piece of shit. Epic Games after normalizing the game execution and improving the netcode, did not do anything else for the community, only console games. That's when I left the community and the Anon here took care of everything.

The truth is that when I heard that Epic was going to make a game of UT, open source and listening to the community, I was happy, I thought to revive the community, the servers, the teamspeaks and to start with the online tournaments among the countries of the region again. But it turned out to be more of the same, just listen to the most casual part of the community and continue to think with a joystick in hand, making a UT for dummies and not for competitive players.

Epic Games I kill UT ... it's very sad.

Toxikk is actually pretty good. The only problem is the very small amount of concurrent players. The models are boring, and the maps lack good visual distinctness between areas, but the movement and weapons feel pretty nice. A lot of thought was put into how you can get around, and its reflected in the maps.

I wish I could articulate exactly why the UT4 alpha feels so terrible. The graphics are better than Toxikk, and the maps more visually distinct, but nothing seems to come together well. Advanced movement techniques seem to be used in gimmicky one-off map locations. Weapon choices like the grenade launcher and overheating link gun make no sense to me. Alt-fire on a few guns does things that make no sense. Its not any particular one thing you can scream at and go "thats whats ruining this game!" but all the small decisions add up to be really unsatisfying. UT is many things, but it was never a game that felt cheap like this does.

late, but ut99 src is slightly different than u1, netcode and render changes mostly. they are not interchangeable without some modifications.

deus ex uses a customized build of unreal engine 1, with better sound functionality(stopping sounds like voice clips when npcs dying isnt possible in u1/ut without creative use of proxy actors), and better vertex meshes with more precision and animation combining (see any mouth movement in dx) which is only possible with skeletal meshes in 227/ut.

the most likely reason why unreal engine 1 is not released is middleware. the legality of redistribution of galaxy audio subsystem is unclear at best. i have obtained the source to it by simply emailing the author who did not give me any explicit instructions... s3tc source can be replaced with 3rd party open source implementations... there may be other proprietary things im not aware of.

source:i spent way too much of my life developing and fixing shit for unreal 1

wish i could help ut99 too but i dont have 227 source, nor legal access to unreal engine 1 source.

>> No.3700846

>>3675859
that is simply not possible unless you can prove it. weapons aim is determined by your viewrotation and handedness plus some custom offsets per gun. likely what you're seeing is a slight flaw of that system: you can verify this pretty easily. use "sethand right" and equip an instant hit weapon and stand behind a wall where the gun is around the wall to the right. now fire it until just before you hit the wall. now use "sethand left" or center/hidden. you should now hit the wall.

tl;dr: handedness changes where you hit to slightly under the crosshair from under and left, right, or center. its much less noticeable with hidden/center handedness.

if your issue extends beyond that please report it to the oldunreal 227 forum and I'll check it out.

I liked the funny chat lines that Q3 bots had but overall they acted silly, always roaming around set patterns non stop, UT bots were capable of more erratic movement and sometimes even stopped to engage someone.

I got Q3 well after UT, I could never enjoy it as much, it really did feel like a tech demo which was the most common criticism. UT was just so huge and immersive, so many gametypes, mutators, maps and weapons with alt-fire that could sometimes even combine into yet more firing modes. And even if UE1 was older than idTech3, it felt like more fine detail went into handcrafting the game to make it look better.

The world lore was simple but effective, Q3 didn't seem to flesh out the whole cybervalhalla thing nearly enough, and dat damn soundtrack was just the icing on the cake, along with the badass sounding autotaunts and great weapon sound effects, I completely lost myself in that world. Especially after I discovered NaliCity and mod sources.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEcPakW42JU

It's a pity that UT4 is shaping to be basically a crappy tech demo. The only thing that doesn't make me lose hope is remembering that Epic has the approach of "it will be done when it's done" so maybe what we're getting is an insight into their usual development cycle, and it isn't so exciting up close since it's taking so long to get anywhere. On the other hand, UT3 and UT2k3 were both rushed and incomplete games so even that little bit hope isn't too sure.

I think UT99's bots work even better if you vary their stats. The stock bot configurations have most of the bots share the same neutral stats and that usually results in matches where the bots' kills/deaths are spread evenly across all of them, which makes it easier for you to dominate matches. There are exceptions such as Loque and Tamerlane who have boosted accuracy but they're all but two in the roster.

Manually tweaking the bot roster would be tedious, so someone made a mod that generates a roster of bots with randomized stats. You can define which stats will be randomized and the upper and lower limits of each of those stats. It can also generate a much larger roster of bots (1000+) than just the 32 that the unmodded game is limited to. You can also choose whether to have new bots generated every match or to generate a fixed roster from which bots will be randomly selected per match. This mod is pretty tasking to set up, and the mod ends up generating bots with duplicate names which I dislike and had to manually delete one by one, so I included the .ini I use with a generated bot roster configured to my liking. I set the bots to have higher accuracy and strafing abilities than the stock bots.

Using this mod, you should see much more variance in bot performance during matches. The bots with the best stats will dominate the weaker bots and you should see matches where you lose or barely win more often. Also, you'll get to see a wider variety of skins that aren't used by the stock bots.

To use the mod, place the files in the System folder then load it as a mutator in-game. The original .ini is included and so is the readme. This mod won't replace or affect the bot roster in the game's own bot config menu, it will simply load its own bots in their place when a match is launched with the mutator.

Doom is definitely faster, yeah. I just find UT closer to Doom than Quake 3, cause Quake 3 a lot more bouncy, and doesn't even have a BFG 9k equivalent.

Problem with Quake 3's bots is that their movement was very predictable and obviously followed a defined path, even on nightmare difficulty. As such, they were incredibly useless for practicing your skills, and overall made for boring gameplay.

UT's bots on higher skill levels were a lot more dynamic and complex with their movement, which allowed for more human-like behavior. I always wish they didnt make the two hardest difficulties involve the bots cheating though

Your traditional kind of music tend to be a straight recording of sound in wave form, stuff like midi (umx in this case) is just information and instructions.

Basically I had my music player interpret UT99's music "information" and found out the samples they use goes way beyond the standard quality of your typical music (44.1khz).

Well they do have their own detail textures, but those are awful and do not have the overlaying effect (im talking about picrelated - a detailtexture within a detail texture within a detailtexture et cetera ad infinitum)

Nothing really mind-blowing.

There is a version of U4E (unreal for ever) which has silly, fun weapons.

And there is Serpentine for the more realistic military gear.

There are a lot more odds and ends, but most of them are garbage. Visit oldunreal's download section

I agree that most HD textures on low poly games look horrible, but I think that this pack looks real accurate to the originals and then again Unreal was always about high quality textures.

Pulse gun is really powerful, especially alt fire if you use the sawing motion trick. Minigun is good because it is equally useful at all ranges. Far better than the Stinger. Bio Rifle is a great damage dealer at close range. The Ripper wasn't included for UT, it's the hardest to use but it can score headshots.

I decided to replay Unreal thanks to this thread.

I took an anon's advice and customized several of my UT99 bots. It makes matches a bit more interesting and dynamic now, as bots have their own strengths and weaknesses and play differently.

All UT99 needs is a fix for the speed-up issue and something to reduce the crosshair's size and fix the paper doll cutout on the upper righthand corner of the screen when using a large screen size.

open the console, type in "Preferences" and go to the renderer settings. Set Max Frame Rate to 200.
