I can't decide what's worse.

Rabid fanboys who have to praise a good game as if it's the second coming of Christ.

Or

That fag who is so mad about them they gotta spam this board nonstop pretending to be one hoping to get more people to hate the game out of spite.

This is what's actually happening.

Anonymous shitposting 101, falseflag is a given.
I bet it's the same guy who uses "Treasurefag" to insult anyone who doesn't hate Treasure.

Dedication and patience, okay. Skill? Eh... I think video games are made so that anyone can beat them, with enough dedication. It's not some genre made for the chosen ones of gaming or something, shmups were one of the most popular arcade genres, all throughout the 1980s since Space Invaders came out in '79. This genre was one of the most played by what you'd nowadays call "normies".

The problem with the shmup fanbase is that it's an already niche scene by now, and truth be told, a majority of today's shmup fanbase comes from Touhou. Like it or not. I don't personally like touhou and I'm not crazy for danmaku in general, but credit goes where it's due. Fans of games and series like Darius, Gradius, R-Type and many other konami/taito/irem shooters are shrinking, more niche games from devs like Treasure, Cave, Raizing, Toaplan, etc have even less fans around.
Some people around here say Ikaruga and Radiant are overrated by normies, but truth is, in this day and age, it's more likely a normie will know about Touhou (even if through some mix of Bad Apple) than either of Treasure's vertis.

I'd consider eidetic memory and sharp reflexes to be skills. Only a handful of people can claim STG ALLs, much less great scores.

>> No.3641115

>>3641071

Not everyone need to aim for WRs in order to enjoy the genre, though.
Most people would be happy to be able to beat the game using a minimum amount of credits, then move on to another one.
Obviously some people might have their favorite which they play more and then become really good at them, but that's a personal thing.

>> No.3641139

>>3641115
Credit feeding is playing the genre wrong. You lose that rush of urgency and the games become dull. If you're not striving for at least a 1cc, you should just drop shumps.

exactly what i meant, look at the holier than thou mentality they have. Once they get into shumps they act as if they are real gamers with abilities the common man doesnt have.

That's because they are real gamers. You need to be good if you want to talk shit. That's why /vr/ toddlers hate shmups so much, because they get called out and go back running to their JRPG and baby platformer threads.

>a majority of today's shmup fanbase comes from Touhou
and Cave
2hu fans are kind of like. I don't know how I'd put it

Anyways the reason Darius/Gradius and R-Type will be known is because Irem had the good decency to create the methodical masterpiece that is R-type Delta. though Leo also had a bitchin soundtrack Bydo remain one of my favorite evil entities ever and it's criminal that r-type tactics II will never be translated. The Bydo campaign of the first game gives as much insight into that bydofication process that I dreamed of you get bydo'd up in R-Type Final and your pilot has no clue why everybody is attacking him.

That and for the longest time you couldn't trip over Gradius inspired games. Moving on, with the decline in arcades I think we also saw a decline in shmups. I always wondered if this also wasn't a fault of no advertising. I mean I remember when r-type delta showed up in my game reviewing outlets but I don't recall seeing some like g-darius on a playstation demo disc. Actually if I hadn't stumbled on Ray'z big box containing music of the Ray series I would have never known that existed.

There's also other things like G.Rev releasing Border Down to the dreamcast well deep into the end of it's life and only in Japan. But given that there's all this engrish in it that makes it (somewhat) import friendly, I wonder if they didn't intend to at one point try to get it published over here like they did with Under Defeat (eventually) Okuga, and Starnia.

I get the insult, but I should remind you that R-Type 1, 3, and Delta requires some wicked memory and Super R-Type requires wicked memory and wicked skill.

Super R-Type is also a crime against humanity.
