I think I read in Japan they actually added grease to the sticks confident their people won't slobber it up like syrup which apparently is a danger in the rest of the world.

Yeah I was gonna say this. Japan is weird, in some aspects they're more advanced, i.e, the whole using the internet from the phone (keitai) started well back in the late 90s over there. Phones were always more popular to browse internet rather than PCs in Japan, and in the west this trend didn't start until smart phones were a thing, western phones just weren't that good before, compared to japanese keitai.

But on the other hand japanese still use old things, for example Fax machines.

As for Yahoo, probably one of the reasons is because Yahoo Auctions is like Japan's eBay.
Yahoo Auctions was never really popular in the west.
Japanese don't use Yahoo for the e-mail, I don't think I've ever seen japanese yahoo mail adresses. (as opposed to others that are actually common there, like dokome, softbank, etc)
