Currently playing through Ninja Gaiden (NES) and Shinobi on the GameGear. There's something about these old, fast paced action games that I adore. They're equal parts challenging and downright fun. Not /vr/ related, but I'm also playing through the 3DS Shinobi as well, and I'd like to give a shout out to Super House of Dead Ninjas, it nails the fast paced action ninja thing down pretty well.

Shinobi III is an improvement overall but The Revenge of Shinobi had a better soundtrack and more memorable bosses.

Pic related might be cheating a bit (released in 2001 but on a system first released in 1990) but it's not only a great Ninja game, it's one of the greatest arcade beat 'em up ever made.

Shinobi III was indeed the better game, but I think the ideal Shinobi game would combine elements from both. Basically, take Shinobi III's moveset, shrink the character a little so you can fit more onscreen but keep him big enough so that the sprites still look great, and make the blocking ability work like it does in Revenge -- I liked how POW felt more powerful because of that. Bring back those two-plane areas where a double jump would take you over the fence. Overall difficulty level should be somewhere between the two, with a broad mix of level designs but relatively few areas where you just rush forward and kill easy enemies, like in stage 5A of Shinobi III.

Revenge definitely had catchier music overall, but I think Shinobi III's soundtrack is more technically impressive. Revenge was one of the earlier soundtracks for the system and I don't think it even uses the PSG. Meanwhile, Shinobi III had one of the best instrument sets in any Genesis game.

Ah, don't get me wrong, I love both games music, I just prefer Yuzo Koshiro's composition over Masayuki Nagao, Hirofumi Murasaki and Morihiko Akiyama's work on III which is definitely more technical but I feel like Yuzo manages to do more with less.

I realize pic related is cheating since it's a GBA games published four years after 1999, but it's a must play for any old school Ninja game fan. Shinobi meets Bionic Commando. Called Ninja Five-O in the states which is either a more awesome or horrible name depending on how you look at it.

Also the Mirai Ninja movie is pretty awesome and definitely recommended. I think both the Japanese and English versions (called Cyber Ninja) are up on Youtube

Fuck that stage FUCK IT. It seriously made me rage HARD.
