But they're using assets from at least TEN different 90's FPS, and people keep finding more every day, and they're selling it for 18 bucks. This is giving a bad rep to modders, too.

Visual design - a colorful and vivid mix of sci-fi and medieval.

Graphics and engine. Picrelated is not from Unreal, but shows a few things it can do. Multi-layered detail textures are something you still don't see often in games (actually I don't remember seeing it anywhere outside of few UE3 games)

Enemy design and AI - much better than anything else at that time.

Levels - a perfect combo of oldschool abstractness that allows for good ammount of creativity with detailing and natural recognisability of places.

I wasn't talking about simple detail textures. I was talking multi-layer ones.

Croteam, Valve and Crytek (and many other devs who bothered with them at all) used single-layer detail textures, which still get smudge blurry if you get closer to the wall.

Unreal however adds additional layers underneath as you get closer - look at the screenshots on the left - they illustrate that quite well. In Unreal detail textures themselves get detail textured, then those detail textures get detail textured et cetera ad infinitum - at no point ever you will see a smudged blurry texture.

More than that, Crytek and Croteam both use very limited set of DTs that consist mostly of pixel noise. Valve has a few different ones for different materials, but they are still not that great. Unreal and Wheel of Time have most diverse detail textures I've seen in any game modern or old. Multle different detail textures for every kind of surface.

I'm amazed no other game developer bothered to actually do this trick - even top AAA modern titles like CoD, Batlefield, and new Doom (not to mention console ones like Killzone) that have graphics as one of their main selling point did this, and their textures still blurred out when you get close enough.

you are right on them using single DT because its rather pointless to go for more unless you really wanna go for GRAPHICS. you get more detail with normal maps and they were the hot thing for a while until devs discovered parallax and so on. UE4 material editor makes it really easy to make multilayered DTs and so on, but again, its rather pointless as you will increase material instructions, instead its better to just have one DT for closeups and one or two for large scale tiling, also UE4 allows blending normal maps much like DTs blend with albedo, dont know about crytek but I know that valve uses it in source as well.

Okay dumb DECORATE math question here:
I'm trying to spawn a ring of x projectiles, x being any possible number (below 360). But sometimes it appears as if it's missing out on spawning projectiles or my math is dumb.

If you replace [n] with say 10 or 4 it works perfectly fine. but if you use something like 11 it starts getting funky. Is it due to 360 not dividing cleanly?

Brown water and blood both suffer from this. The blood is either used for decoration or it's some kind of flaming demon blood that burns through your boots. Whenever I map, I usually keep the damage floors restricted to toxic waste and lava as the others may not be immediately obvious about the risk.

This is a good map with some very good parts but it had a rough start. The encounter near the start with like 8 death knights was way too tedious. Also, when you loop back to the start after raising the bridge, it's not that obvious where to go. I think some of the locked doors need messages. The part where you go up a jump pad, fight some knights, encounter a locked door with no message, and apparently what you're supposed to do is go back down then back up again to trigger new monsters to spawn and reveal a switch to open the door was pretty vague. I also think that the grenade launcher was given way too late, I got pretty tired of having to use only shotguns and nailguns for like 90% of the map.

Now for the good parts. True to the map's name, it makes extensive use of monsters jumping down from above and I think it does it pretty well. I was caught off-guard plenty of times. There are parts where an ogre jumps down, then you think it's clear then another ogre jumps down then you try to back away but now there's a scrag blocking your exit so you eat a chainsaw to the face. I liked the part where a seemingly unguarded pair of ammo boxes involved an ambush with an ogre lurking in a dark alcove chainsawing you. The shortcut elevator was very much welcome. The final arena is good in concept but lacks in execution. Unlike most arenas, the terrain here is very uneven and there are plenty of obstacles to impede the player and cause him to get cornered and make it difficult for him to keep track of enemies. The enemies teleport in via placed teleporters which makes it fair (as opposed to just teleporting them in random scattered points) but the critical flaw of this arena is that you can just camp one teleporter at a time and not worry about the other. Furthermore, each teleporter only spawns the next tier of monster after the current one is killed. The teleporters should be time-based.

I think the models are all amazing. Especially the skull wizard is cool as fuck. You don't see realistic movement of cloth like that again in models until the late 2000's or so.
I was actually going to use them in a gzdoom mod at some point, but that will have to wait until proper shading is introduced (which it will be, actually). Wrote some crazy ass decorate for the hexen sword and the quake knight, which made the sword check for collision each frame and visually stop/recoil if you hit anything, and the knight would similarly use part of his attack animations to block you (with vertical and horizontal attacks/blocks handled separately).

I don't like that it toes the line between low poly and hi. It's inconsistent. If they gave a shit about poly density they would have more than 4 sides on the shotgun barrel, and far less individual branches on the horns. The textures are too large for the model res, and they're all in all mapped pretty piss-poor.

From what I've seen of the environments the textures are misaligned all over the place too.

I just don't like that "low poly" or "retro" seems to invite laziness to some. I don't know if duskdevs are being lazy, or if this is just how that want it to be or what. The actual gameplay looks pretty fun though.

While Chasm may look more like Quake engine game, it is actually closer to Doom/Duke.

It has slopes and 3d models, as well as interactive 3D environment and loads of cool effects, but it can only doo 1 floor with no RoR whatsoever.

It was being able to run at 486 at decent speed (where Quake and Descent could barely do 15 fps), due to it using some sort of approximation algorithm for rendering world geometry. (also world is not true 3D and can not render looking up/down properly, same as Doom and Duke), Not noticable on low resolutions, it becomes a bit visible at 640x480 (highest the game can go on my Dosbox setup). You can see the wall and objects wobbling a bit if you look down and rotate.

Well in Doom and Doom 2 he's more determined, and enduring. Only occasionally angry, but you would be too if you were being shot at and beaten constantly. In Doom 3 you're not even proper "doomguy" you're just some marine who looks mildly displeased. But I imagine he's a bit miffed at being tranferred to a shithole planet that everyone unanimously hates, and then having to mop up their demon problem. Getting my doom.bat launcher to read the registry in 32>32, 32>64, 64>32 and 64>64-bit permutations was a nightmare but the good thing is that it can locate doom wads from Steam libraries located in other locations than default and on other drives -- better than any DOOM port's native support. I liked what Doom did with the ammos (using the chainsaw to replenish yours ammo), but it wasn't exploited properly in the game. There's still way enough ammo to refill yourself properly.

Doom 4 is pretty good and all, but the glory kills make it a different type of speed from doom. It's more point to point, and less about constant dodging from all angles. More arena-like too. Fewer monsters at any given time.

You video is also with increased speed relics out the ass. The kills and speed are much slower in the early game (plus FOV changes).

That's not just Snapmap limit, that's the game hard-coded limit - to illustrate go on the first map past the cave with basic zombies (where the first suit upgrade is). Wake them up, then rush to the next combat zone (after first weapon upgrade) - it spawns some enemies over the course of it. Run back - zombies (and a few imps if you spawned them by going downhiull) will disappear because they were simply unloaded from the game.

It is for Unreal like Hexen for Doom - instead of wepons you get various spells. Some are straightforward attacks like lightning of Fireballs, others are required to solve puzzles, Elemental shields, Pass through thin obstacles, as well as traps and all other sorts of neat stuff.

I feel like Doom 4 tried to be brutal doom but failed miserably.

Opinion time:
What makes Brutal Doom fun is the aggressive, assaultive enemies and very powerful weapons. You die faster, they die faster. You also move around light lightning (just like in regular Doom) and can also jump kick people like so. It's like Doom + COD, with only what I like from both of them.

Doom 4:
>let's make doom guy slower but put a fisheye camera so it looks like he's going fast
