Game comes out, and I'm too young to play or understand anything. Brother plays the shit out of it and I watch. Don't understand anything.

15 years old, try to play it. Can't beat the first boss, give up.

22, finally buckle down and play through the entire game on christmas break. Loved it, truly a fantastic game and wish I played it when it came out.

Wtf is wrong with you people; Final Fantasy games aren't that hard.....

There is no Omega Weapon in FFVII, so you might be the one who can't really read.

Moreover, creating an arbitrary, and arguably wrong portmanteau term for a group of distinct entities and then complaining that normal people can't figure out what you mean due to your sheer autism is pretty damn tragic.

I didn't have the patience for random turn-based battles my first time through so I often ran. Then I wondered why all the bosses were so tough. Good times.

>> No.3634526

I wanted to liked it because it looked so cool, but I never really got that far in the game, I think I always dropped it somewhere after leaving Midgar. Eventually I beat it but I had played tons of other good RPGs and I thought VII was a decent 7.5/10 at best.
The loading times killed it for me, random battles with loading times was not a good idea at all for RPGs.

4 is easily one of the weakest games in the series and only nostalgia addled manchildren would argue otherwise. It's more restrictive on gameplay than Final Fantasy XIII but doesn't bring anything interesting to the table. The story is absolute garbage and every good aspect(some character arcs) is finished too quickly. Even the music is mediocre.

I just started playing it with 24 and it's every bit as amazing as people have said, AND MORE.

That shit rarely happens to me. Usually I have high expectations for a classic that lead to me being merely satisfied with it, but this game is 11/10.

Somehow the anime style characters, the melodrama, the turn-based combat works even though those are typically things I dislike. Maybe the setting adds more weight to it, the many locations to visit, the different mini-games that you get thrown in, it just seems like a true labour of live.

Final Fantasy is already a game series that should have been a series of movies, but VII made it 500 times worse and brought a horribly confused, weak story to the table amplified by boring, one dimensional characters, clashing graphic styles, poor pacing, stupid minigames, and other bullshit that makes it absolutely the weakest FF game ever.

The nostalgia glasses of the fucking Playstation/N64 generation must be so thick that they stick out a half meter from the fucking eye.

>> No.3636236

You must be either a jaded bastard or one insufferable little shit.

When I played FF7 for the first time at age 13 I genuinely believed its story was great - and that's an understatement. It was, for me - and probably lots of other people, of many different ages - at the time, the greatest story ever rendered in vidya form.

That doesn't mean it "objectively" is that great. Now that I'm older - and anyone else can do this too - I can see, and am perfectly willing to admit that it does have its flaws - like every story, of course.

I'm not arguing its story is good because of nostalgia... I just mean to point out that it was, rightfully, very well received at the time; therefore, to shit all over that storyline 20 years later with no regard for that fact is to do a disservice not only to the story itself but also the historical record. Basically, I just think you ought to at least recognize the overall game's unprecedented achievements in that regard, for what it's worth. As I'm willing to admit the story isn't that great in hindsight, so too should you accept that, however imperfect FF7's story may be, it is not completely without merit.

TL;DR: pay respect where it is due.

>> No.3636248

>>3636236
I'm 23 and I played FF7 for the first time last year, and I think the story is brilliant. At least until you left Midgar, then it becomes a wild goose chase after Sephiroth for the rest of the game. Still, I found it FAR easier to follow than later games in the series (barring IX). Plus the characters may not have been terribly deep (though I'd argue Cloud is) but they were still entertaining.

>> No.3636251

>>3636236
7 was a great balance of story and gameplay. My two bests in each category are:

Story - VI

This had the best characters, the best storyline, the best plot progression and did very fucking well at balancing everyone's role in the story. Kefka himself is a Hell of a villain, and the best part is that he grows with the characters too.

Gameplay - XII/X

This one's a toss up - mainly because there was just much to do between the both of them. There were craploads of minigames, Superbosses and battle systems. The plot for XII falters a little, even if it does have the best characters. XII's endgame is a little weak, but it makes up for what it can't take from X in sheer friggin' size and treasure hunts.

I will never forgive Advent Children for turning Cloud into a mope. What the actual fuck, man? This was a cocky, money-hungry, confused, socially-awkward-but-overall-serviceable character and he turns into fucking Gackt in 2005? Unbelievable.

Worth a thousand words.

>> No.3636610

in summary, Cloud's whole story is a mess, Tifa deserves better, Aeris is a turboslut, Barret had the best character arc, why does Red XIII exist, Cait Sith is a nigger, Cid saved the second half of disc 1 with his introduction, no one cares about Yuffie and Vincent was a mistake

Story:
everything up to escaping Midgar - 10/10
Calm Town to Gold Saucer - 6/10
Rest of Disc 1 - 4/10
Entirety of Disc 2 until Attack on Midgar - 2/10
Rest of Disc 2 - 7/10
Disc 3 - 6/10, was generous since Xenogears disc2 was garbage

Gameplay: good, extremely deep materia system, allowed for all sorts of customization. Downfall was mostly easy battles outside of a random few difficulty spikes (Demon Gate, Great Glacier)

Music: extremely good, disc 1 over world theme is fucking great. Lots of memorable tunes

Misc:
Lots of different mini games, and unlike most games I play, I generally enjoyed almost all of them. A couple cool areas/fights for high powered parties in disc 3. Hidden limit breaks/ultimate weapons that were hidden but not completely obscure.
