Was Rascal really bad though? I cheated on it so I never got a proper experience on it.

Wild 9

This game was HYPED like fucking crazy. Oh it's by SHINY! The people who made Earthworm Jim!!! YOU CAN TORTURE YOUR ENEMIES!
They sent out VHS tapes to people who subscribed to some of the PS1 magazines at the time - this was just ridiculous!

Then it came out and, while it got some good reviews here and there, I rented it and was not impressed. Just an ugly game that was boring to play. I bought it a few years later when it was in the discount bin for 3 bux and it still sucked.

I don't think it was really as shit as some of the god awful games on the PS1 (for every amazing PS1 game there were like 5 shitty ones) but since it was so hyped it just made it that much worse.

Even as a kid with horrible taste I thought that game was absolute shit.

Pic related, also from Psygnosis.

Good to see someone else remembers.
Yes, it was hyped to hell and back despite being, at best, completely forgettable.

And to think some kids say game journalism has BECOME corrupted NOW.

Every Toshinden game released after the original PS1/PC release. In 1995, Toshinden on PS1 was amazing.

3-D fighters were just beginning with Virtua Fighter and Tekken and both were ugly as hell. They also were vastly different than regular fighting games as they lacked fireballs, super moves, and other 2-D staples that fighting game fans were used to.

When Toshinden launched with PS1, it was a huge hit as it was the best looking fighting game at the time, the music was great, the characters were creative, and the game was fun to play. It was the epitome of style of substance, but there wasn't much competition from the awful VF 1 port on Saturn and the ugly, janky Tekken 1. Watch this video of one of the final boss battles to understand how far ahead it was of the competition:

There was such an epic feeling in the game.

After this though, every future Toshinden failed to innovate. While Virtua Fighter 2, Tekken 2, and games like Bloody Roar and multitudes of 3-d fighters began being release, Toshinden's sequels were mediocre at best.

The Saturn Toshindens were ugly as hell. The PS1 versions of 2 and 3 were boring with bad animations and annoying gameplay quirks.

The series final installment, 4 on ps1, didn't even make it out of Japan.

It is strange to have a series knock it out of the ball park in the first installment and then fail so much on future versions.

>The PS1 versions of 2 and 3 were boring with bad animations

To be honest the PS1 version of 1 had shitty animations too, the sequels just became jankier and jankier.

Check the PC port of the first game. They fixed up the animations by adding super smooth tweening to them, and using higher precision math so the polygons don't jerk as much. You can see it the best in winquotes, where the characters just stand still - their body moves smoothly as they breath. In the PS1 version, it's like a 3-step animation.

>The series final installment, 4 on ps1, didn't even make it out of Japan.

It was released in Europe. In Japan they also had three more games: a card battler, a puzzle vs game, and a chibi fighter.

The best part of the Toshinden games was the music IMO. The character design was also great. Although the characters became stupider and stupider later on.

Toshinden 3 gets notable mention for the sheer amount of over-the-top extra fighters. They were just clones of the main cast, but they had some unique animations, and they were bloody ridiculous reskins: Michael Jackson, Jason Voorhees, Catwoman, a tiki woman, a pirate fencer, a monkey, etc.

The Saturn version of the first game was shit, the second was much more impressive but it was based on the poor 2nd game which was not as fun to play. Also, both Saturn versions got some brilliant extra music:

They also fucked up the voice acting in all the english releases. I don't normally bitch about this but they were really, truly awful compared to the japanese original in the first game.

Oh God, can recall. It was this three year build up "from the makers of Earthworm Jim". Then it finally came out... and it was a kinda generic lightning whip mechanic. I think there was a girl with a giant tree trunk. Rented it once and never heard about it again.
