It's supposed to have a sickly green skin with red eyes, it's what Tolkien might have called a Hobgoblin, and what I will call an Ur-Goblin, a bred-back Goblin race meant to represent their larger Troll ancestors. SW is easy to "katana start", because the amount of weapons/ammo you find in each level is insane, it barely makes a difference at times. It's easy to die in this game though, so you have to be extra careful, or save.

I've done it on the highest skill, without saving.

Do yourself a favour and give it a try. It's tons of fun, for instance it actually gives use to some equipment items which you'd dismiss in a "normal" play.

Have you played the secret maps of the add-ons? Some of them are hidden well. The ones in WT seem to be 'secret maps' because they were the least finished but they're worth a shot.

Also give a try to Last Warrior TC; and also my map Showdown In Suzhou.

Don't worry, I cleaned the room by firing my plasma gun like a total retard while triggering some monster infighting with one of the cacos, the next problem was trying to clean the room full of Barons and that one Cyberdemon, I triggered more monster infighting and ripped them a new one with Semen Vision.
Once moving to the next map, a pistol zombieman insta-killed me because I had 3% health left.
I don't get why people hate Revenants, I love them unlike Pain Elementals.

You normally don't feel it in smaller levels, but huge battles leave a ton.

Well there's a lot of ways you can mod doom. There's mapmaking, drawing character or weapon art (sprites), scripting and whatnot. Getting into the basics is very easy and entertaining, but putting jazz jackrabbit into samsara would require very extensive knowledge of zdoom scripting.

I would recommend you look at the "gunlabs" tutorials, and to simply get slade3 and open up all your favorite mods to see what makes them tick on the inside.

Guys, what is a "bullet sponge" enemy anyway?
Some people say it's an enemy who can soak up too much damage(hence the "sponge" in the name), but by that logic you could consider most high tier enemies in Doom bullet sponges, but a lot of people will argue against that.
I only ever see the term being used when someone wants to trash talk a game, and is looking for flaws to justify their dislike.

The Baron is kind of a bullet sponge, in that a Knight can often be used to accomplish the same thing but with better level flow.

I don't think they are, they're barely even music in my opinion, there's nothing memorable about them, it's just disconnected noise to me, I feel it's just a clumsy substitute for real ambient sounds, like the sound designer is going "Ooooh, spooky noises!"







I think tracks like these are much more interesting and generate more tension (and many deliver a solid melancholic feel, like E1M8, Doom 2 Map 16 and Map 20), it makes for a more sinister feeling, and has more emotion to them, the high tempo rock tracks are fitting for the action of many levels, which makes for a better contrast and break-up rather than an endless droning through the entire game.

Just got the Carrion cannon for the first time, and I have a few Questions:

The techincal definition of music is "an art form whose medium is sound and silence" literally anything can be music, even a recorded fart. It may not be "good" music in your opinion, but still technically music.

I prefer Doom64's dark ambience to Dooms synth covers of 90s metal songs.
I also prefer Quakes amazing ambience to Dooms music.
Synth covers of 90s thrash suits dooms action packed colorful atmosphere, but Doom64 and Quake both have darker worlds which really benefit from disturbing ambient sound rather than memorable melodies.

An AI they make would be able to play any map, even randomized one, and will be able to learn it same way humans do. Eventually, it should become able to play any FPS, just like a human.

Making AI learn in the same way we do is the end goal of neurological networks, and is the first step in creating true ai.

I never really got into Ascend, but another of my Tribes buddies liked it a lot.

I was such an asshole on some of the mod servers like Shifter, there was an Arbitor class that not many people used because they only got energy weapons, but I would base rape like crazy and was really good at fucking with people using cloaking and teleports as well. It wasn't uncommon for my score to be higher than everyone else's put together and often ended in me getting kicked or having the opposite team drop.

Though it was sometimes very justified. Another shitty thing I'd do is get a deployable base right at the start of a match and then just keep running until I got to the edge of the map.

Most Tribes maps just ended and you could jump off into an abyss, so that's what I'd do. Jump and they deploy my base after a while. Then just suicide and go back to find where it was and from there spend the entire game firing guided missiles.

Then they modded it so you couldn't put a missile station right on a deployable base. But they forgot to mod to make it so you couldn't put a missile station on a deployable platform, attached to a base and they never did.

Looking back it was pretty terrible, but that's what my muddled mind enjoyed at the time.

I would agree with that, and really base raping is like playing the game without playing the same game. Quake style death match never interested me, but if I can run around in the background causing havoc for their infrastructure then that's fun. It's kind of a shitty way to play though and I wouldn't call myself a "good" player.

It also led to one of my favorite gaming tales. One of the big tribes then was called Fox Pack and they usually ran the Shifter servers I liked.

Several months went by and I'd largely forgotten about the incident (I also wasn't playing as much at that point) when a guy joined the game and then started teamkilling everyone like crazy for about five minutes until he was kicked.

So I ask what was wrong with him and someone tells me he used to be Madd Dogg on Fox Pack until he got kicked and now all he does is teamkill and swear until people kick him from the game.

Need a bit of help here.
I'm planning on making a mod with 4-5 weapons per slot. The idea is giving player at least one new weapon/spell/weapon upgrade in every level. Now, most of thwm would be straight upgrades, with last one being a sidegrade compared to the previous.

This obviously presents a few problems - namely ammo balancing, and the actual clusterfuck of having to cycle through so many weapons.

1) One of the methods to balance all the guns out would be ammo useage, but not the ven one, like one shot from Gun X wastes 2 rockets, or a revolver shot takes 4 pistol ammo., and more in the vein of "Same ammount of bullets gives Pistol A 400 shots, B - 350 shots, C - 70 shots and D - 180 shots"

To the player the ammo pool would be presented as a set of bars (Pistol Bullets, Rifle Rounds, Shotgun Shells, Explosives Packs, Energy Cells), and actuall numbers of remaining shots only shown when player equips a weapon (the bar of ammo this weapon uses changes color)

If you have any better ideas regarding this, please do tell.

2) The second issue is where main problem lies - I want to try and use a slot system, where player has 7-8 slots and can assign any weapon to any slot he likes, at any moment, providing he already had picked up this weapon before - I.e. he will carry all the guns he picked up without actual limit, but only few of them he can outright select at any time without some additional actions.

I'd like to get input of proficient people onto how one should go about such a system. Maybe it was implemented already somewhere I can loook at?

As I said, in the post, it's a way to upgrade players arsenal for the upcoming challenges, and present player with a new toy every single level, with some weapons being purely secret ones.

PRODOOMER (yes, it's an actual name) - a clear showcase of how fuckton of effort can go in a very wrong direction. There's a lot of cool ideas, but they are cobbled together in a clusterfucky way that makes the mod not very fun to play, paired up with very questionable level design decisions. Elements, that would've been great if used right, combined in a ridiculously shitty way, and then multiplied via copypaste.

Also the lack of actual playtester input is obvious (there's not many bugs, but quite a lot of bad stuff that would've been butchered on sight should there been a playtest by a proficient person, and the mod wouldve been soooo much better by it)

Play it to see for yourself, then tell me what you think. This mod gives quite a variety of reactions from different people. Always nice to hear a new opinion

2) No, its not the same thing. Think about Pistol 1 spending 1 ammo, Pistol 2 spending 1.2 ammo, Pistol 3 - 1.6 ammo, i.e. uneven ammounts for more precise balancing

The idea is that player goes through various worlds, acquiring world-specific weapons , some worlds being throwbacks to FPS and other games and fiction of the 80's, 90's and early 00's. For example: In Nazi Germany castle , where Nazis summon demons, he gets a Luger, then in Modern world he gets a Glock 17 from a gun store, then in a western world he gets a revolver, then he gets a futuristic auto-pistol with several firing modes, then a mystic revolver as a sidegrade to that (shoots spells). Secret weapon of the category are a flare gun from Blood.
Weapons should be different by design and representative of the place they were found in.

Basic plot: Universe is ending, and worlds are colliding, demons break through the gaps of reality, you have little time to escape, jumping from world to world, with about 1-2, maximum 3 levels per world. Different way of operation.
Shotgun 1 is a sawnoff, wide spread, good damage, fast reload, can fire pop rocket ammo and slugs found later in the game as altfires.
Shotgun 2 is a vertical, full length, tighter spread that hits a vertical oval shape, better to use against taller enemies but won't hit a crowd, slower reload with a bit more damage overall. Can also fire pop rocket ammo and slugs.
Shotgun 2.5 (secret weapon) - lever action shotgun, fast fire, fast reload, a bit weaker. Can fire slugs, but not pop rockets.
Shotgun 3 - modern pump action, same as lever action, but tighter spread and a bit better damage. Overall more DPS than Shotgun 1 and 2, due to fire rate, but less burst damage. Can fire pop rocket ammo and slugs.
Shotgun 4 - futuristic autoshotgun, adjustable spread (altfire switches between 3 modes), lower damage, fast firing. Only fires buckshot. Low ammo economy.
Shotgun 5 - Futuristic quad shotgun, high burst damage, low reload speed, overall lower DPS than Shotgun 4. Can fire empty without a reload (reload is purely maual) for 1/5th of the damage and a substantial knockback (Kinetic Burst upgrade)

The idea behind slot system: at any time open a menu, select a slot, select what weapon (of the available to you) goes into that slot. That slot now will hold that weapon, and that weapon only until you switch. 1-2 are explicitly supposed to get invalidated by 4 and 3+SpecialAmmo, with 5 being "BFG" of the category (very ammo inefficient outside of special attack, but capable of destroying crowds otherwise) Thing is, you'll get 4 only at about 60% into the game and 5 about 85% in.

Playing some Total chaos. I like what I'm seeing in the alpha, actually making my way along the chapter 1.

It's a classic Survival horror, puzzles are a bit bland but the combat is surprisingly good. It's quick, you need some timing and reflexes to dash in the right moment and backing out between your attacks. I find I'm always running and an odd vibe of Doom gameplay.

There is some bullshit, I didn't figure how enemies can counter attack and it's a bit linear. I think there is some potential here

I was glad to find this disc archived, because a reseller I befriended at a swap meet flat out gave me this book in mint condition and it was just missing the disc. Wrack level design is shit tier.
It's enemy design is UTTER SHIT tier.
Encounters are boring and uninspired.

If you people are interested, someone else who was trans was Burger Bill, an oldschool PC dev, who did some work on ports of Doom and Wolfenstein to various platforms (on top of quite a lot of other things). She has a story on her channel about why the 3DO port of Doom was such an unmitigated mess, apparently the people assigned to do it were galloping retards and (s)he had basically rush it out all herself in 10 weeks. It has nothing to do with gender but it's a fascinating story about circumstances and ineptitude.

Is there a weapon more powerful than the BFG in any other FPS game?
