Would this have been a more or less successful design in 1989?

The choice for the start and select buttons is impossible.

That's the most retarded looking thing I think I've ever seen.

Less. I think the Gameboy wanted to seem similar to pocket calculators for a reason.

It looks like a game gear

Which definitely means it would have been less popular with such a design.

It was a triple threat of high price, giant size and terrible battery life that killed these two

The original game boy was 90 bucks, four AA batteries could run it for days and it could kinda sorta theoretically fit in your pocket

That's not even an original Lynx, it's the smaller revision

I honestly prefer the DMG's vertical layout to the horizontal layout that seemed to end up sticking. I guess vertical just allows more efficient use of space, especially with widescreen, but personally I don't really care if it's a little bulky.

You have to have some area under the controls for the heel of your hand, Dummy. Game Boys are a lot heavier than NES controllers

maybe if you're wearing hammer pants.
An inner coat pocket might be more plausible.

The existence of this thing is weird to me even though I like it a lot.

Having the buttons that close to the bottom of the handheld would make it obscenely uncomfortable to use.

The buttons on a Gameboy are closer to the center of the handheld so that the bottom half basically acts as a handle to grip the console with.

Game Gear always looked kind of dumb, but they didn't have much of a choice since the thing had to hold 6 fucking AAs.

That's why if you played the brick enough, you bought the rechargeable power pack/adapter. The thing eventually paid for itself compared to the cost of batteries.
