I'm playing the first FF game, the one from NES. But the excessive grinding and slow gameplay make it annoying to play.

Which is the best version of this game? Is there any version that solve these two problems?

>> No.3598534

You don't ever have to grind in Final Fantasy 1 even in the NES version.
Learn to use potions to heal yourself between battles.

>> No.3598535

Probably the GBA/PSP. And if i were you i'd start with II, which has the most polished plot in the series. Unless you actually prefer gameplay, than jump to V.

I beat the NES games for the first time in 98 or so after playing FFIII and VII. I tried FFI again in 2011 and couldn't stand it. A year or so later I played it on PSP and beat it again.

For me the PSP version was good enough to get me playing. Guessing any version that is based on that port would be the same deal.

Run from encounters that look too dangerous to fight. The bosses in FF1 aren't that tough - getting to the boss in one piece is more difficult. If you learn to run from dangerous encounters you'll survive longer and won't need to grind.

Prepare the rope, boys. I'm ready to be lynched.

What the hell is this control scheme?

Use WASD for the directions and the numpad for A and B like a normal person. With a real NES controller you wouldn't use the right hand for movement either so why do this while emulating?

>> No.3598572

>>3598560
Because with an NES controller you play with your thumbs, not your fingers.
Also, I played a lot of Apogee games back in the day, they were all set up with directional keys being movement keys.

Both the GBA and PSP versions are the most beginner friendly from a gameplay perspective, because it uses a regular MP system instead of the DnD "x uses per day" system of the original, it makes healing and combat a lot easier. The PS1 version (and I think WonderSwan) still uses DnD system.

You're already playing it.

The best version is Origins on PSI. A nice graphical upgrade and it removes annoyances like swinging at recently-defeated enemies, but doesn't nerf the overall difficulty like later versions did.

It's called planning. Either you make double sure an enemy gets killed or you carefully coordinate as not to waste an attack.

this

especially since running away is bugged in FF1, making it really easy to do

>> No.3598710

>>3598667
The fact that future FF installments removed that need to "plan" is a tantamount admission by the devs that it was a shitty part of the game design that needed to be fixed.

only reason it wasnt in FF3 is because kawazu left to make SaGa

It's a sign of casualization.
Might as well skip the planning phase and have actions executed directly.

>> No.3598721

>>3598710
nah, it's an admission that most people who play these games are braindead and prefer holding one button without even looking at the screen

it's why square did things like releasing easier versions of FFIV, they knew their audience well

>> No.3598726

>>3598715
Oh I see how it is. At first CASUAALLLLSSS didn't really become a thing until 7th gen. Now it's being retroactively applied to as far back as 1990. I guess it'll only be inevitable that ALL games will eventually be called casual except for Tennis for Two, the only TRUE hardcore game.

>> No.3598728

>>3598715
That's not casualization, cumsucker. Casualization would be "Buy a megalixir now for $2.50", got it memorized?

It was a shit design choice, nobody liked it, and it made no sense. Don't pull revisionism with me, I can tell you that nobody on this planet thought it was a good idea.

>> No.3598742

>>3598534
Not true depending on your team. If you're running gungho with the tower of power you're going to have to grind a little.

>>3598721
Why is the DS version of 3 harder then?

>> No.3598773

>>3598710
Funny how that coincides with FF becoming an oversimplified mess of a game focused on story instead of gameplay.

No wonder FF went to shit after the one designer who actually cared about mechanics and the game being good left the team to do his own shit.

Because it was reduced to the bare minimum to work well enough to contextualize the game and the characters while leaving space to actual gameplay. It has a good story precisely because it's not story focused.

FF2 was cool becouse you actually feel the empire isn't just a bunch of mooks that can be taken down from lv.1 just becouse you are the hero. People die in that game so shit is real and the emperor is the only truly evil FF villain. Literally no shred of conscience in him, just his ambition to rule.

PSP or GBA are best, arguably PSP is better due to looking and sounding fantastic (plus extra boss music). You won't have to grind at all (unless you are taking on the super bosses), and the gameplay isn't slow at all if you know what you are doing.

Beat it in 15 hours - no grinding required

I like the NES version of the game because that is where they all started.

Final Fantasy Origins contains Final Fantasy 1 and 2 on separate discs for the PSX. They had some nice features including graphical upgrades and art galleries while still remaining true to the original. I have not played any other version.

I wouldn't call the grinding in the game excessive or the gameplay annoying. Maybe turn based RPGs just aren't for you.

Origins is the way I went and I didn't regret it. Really pretty remake that changed nothing outside of the aesthetics from what I know.

Didn't really like the PSP release because its art was a little too clear. Ended up looking more like a flash game in the end.

You're already playing it. The PSP remakes go full babby and probably speed the pace up a lot, but honestly if you can't handle slow pace why even bother to play these games? If you only play a remake you'll only be pretending that you've played FF1. Better to not play at all, if you ask me.

Only reason i liked the Dawn of Souls version is for the extra dungeons. Other than that, the Original is my favorite.

>> No.3599672

I just made it through the NES version of this.

It's not that bad OP, just be sure to check on the internet what spells are bugged so you don't have to waste money on them.

Grinding isn't really a problem on this, maybe you will have to grind for money or some extra levels so you can use level 8 magic but the game trows a LOT of money to you and there's that tiny spot where you encounter some late game enemies really early so you can get strong faster.

Be sure to have a lot of potions on you all the time, every single one of your 99 potions will be useful until you find the healing staff, then they will still be extremely useful but not as much.

Using the speed up function in the emulator is okay, buying potions without it will be an unnecessary pain in the ass without it.

Also, run, run a lot if you want to keep your magic full.
