This is not /v/, where everyone is browbeat into one unilateral opinion.

Hyper Dimension is pretty good too, but it's more traditional. Butoden series has its own style that can't really be compared to any other fighting game, I like it because of that originality and because it's really fun once you get the hang of it.
Butoden 1 isn't too good, but Super Butoden 2 nailed the gameplay. You played second game, right?

>> No.3597684

I used Xavier, Trident, and Slash mostly.

Trident for his 40% damage trident spin move, his powerful kick attacks, and that phasing move.

Xavier because I could pull off the easiest stun combos with him (his LP move) plus he had a freeze move similar to Sub-Zero, as well as the ability to summon a snake to do something like 20% damage. Oh, and they were all charge moves, meaning they were easy to pull off (the game had some retarded special move motions, like press B and X together and so).

And Slash because if you jumped back and pressed HP, he changed directions mid-jump; and the AI always ate this attack. But more importantly he could ALWAYS pull off his MP throw, even when he had no inner strength meter (it was considered a "special" move, drained meter, but always worked even if you had none).
The jump-back-HP trick is how I managed to beat the Eternal Champion.

>I have no idea why it doesn't get as much love as Street Fighter or Darkstalkers
It's a CPS3 game. That's it.

Just like Street Fighter III didn't used to get as much love, and the reason why even now not that many people talk about Red Earth/Warzard, CPS3 games just don't get a lot of love as they're on a more obscure arcade board. You also don't hear a lot of SNK fans talking about Buriki One and Sam Sho 64, despite them being incredible games, or SEGA fans talking about Model 3 games like SpikeOut. They just aren't known as well, and most people don't bother to expand their knowledge for some reason.

As a game, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is great, and very unique, but a bit more difficult to get into than most other Capcom fighters. What's more, the fact that it's based on an existing property is probably a bit off-putting to some, as you need context to fully appreciate the characters, or understand some of the wackier parts of the game (the N' Doul desert battle, characters being named after bands and artists, etc).

Nope. A damn, damn shame too, but it's now emulated extremely well by Supermodel, so it's not as big a deal anymore.

I always found it kinda strange how few people know about SpikeOut, considering it essentially is Streets of Rage 4, but then again I only know about it because I got to play it in the arcades, along with other obscure games like Fighting Layer, which luckily eventually did get the recognition it deserved.

I'm very convinced that this one fighting game existed that I havent been able to find anywhere. People keep saying it's these other games, but no, I fucking remember playing this shit at a laundramat.

SpikeOut was ten years ahead of its time. I remember reading in an arcade mag how it had this revolutionary system that would chain cabinets together so an arcade could run something ridiculous like 8v8 fights, and the aim was eventually to have them online so you could fight people in arcades around the world.

It needs to be remastered and released with online multiplayer, ASAP.

I remember reading in an arcade mag how it had this revolutionary system that would chain cabinets together so an arcade could run something ridiculous like 8v8 fights, and the aim was eventually to have them online so you could fight people in arcades around the world.

You might also be thinking of Spikers Battle there, which was a sort of sort of semi-sequel which played like an arena fighting game, with a player fighting in an enclosed arena, in a four-way match, though using the beat-em-up engine from SpikeOut, and it was released on NAOMI. Supposedly, Sega were going to skim over releasing a port of SpikeOut and would instead port Battle to the Dreamcast, although that never happened.

There was also a sort of spin off on NAOMI called SlashOut, which was SpikeOut but with a more fantastic, anime-esque setting. It's okay, but pails in comparison to the surprising complexity of SpikeOut's battle system.

You've reminded me why they probably decided not to port SpikeOut though. Cabinets were linked up, and that was how multiplayer worked. Considering much of the able of beat-em-ups to casual fans of the genre is the ability to play 2-player, I suspect they didn't want to port it or potentially risk alienating their audience, although that's just a theory. You could have had console link-up of course, but the appeal of an beat-em-up to most is the ability to sit down and play it with friends.

That's the thing though, as you brought up, SEGA always had this tendency to make games which were years ahead of their time, and it bit them in the ass continuously. You had to wait 10 years for an arcade perfect port of OutRun on the Sega Saturn, not to mention all those amazing Model 2 and Model 3 games which were either downgraded graphically when ported or never ported at all.

This guy is my nigga right here. The chibi version where it had RPG elements was pretty fun. I also liked Fighters destiny as well.

I think pretty much no one will agree with me on this but I think Ehrgeiz had a surprising amount of depth in the fighting game, as fan friendly as it looked with having Cloud and Tifa being playable characters, the game was pretty complex and rewarded good players who understood the mechanics.

I wish more fighters had a decent "tourney mode" of sorts comparable to VF4evo's did, where you played in various fictional arcades to prove your worth until you got good and became a legend. I miss that shit

I do remember reading about that years ago. Sega actually had very good ties with Microsoft (mainly because of being allowed to use Windows CE on the dreamcast), and so they effectively wanted the Xbox to be the successor to the Dreamcast, hence titles like that, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Crazy Taxi 3, House of the Dead 3, etc.

In fact, they were initially in discussions with microsoft to make the Xbox also able to play Dreamcast games, although that eventually fell through for whatever reason.

As for Battle Street, it mostly seems to be a decent remake for SpikeOut, albeit it with significantly less appealing visuals. One thing I hate about Gen 6 is that the PS2 and Xbox kinda purposefully killed bright, colourful visuals.
