Depends. Detailed can look good, but a certain point it just looks like a muddier version of what could have been a higher resolution image. For instance Donkey Kong Country suffers from the jpeg effect when blown up. One of the few older games where I think putting a gentle blur helps the overall image.

Simple art styles like Mario, Zelda, and Earthbound in contrast look perfectly fine at any scale.

There is merit to both, but most people prefer detailed. In most pixel art threads people only talk about the biggest, most detailed sprites of the late 90's like Metal Slug, Rayman and Lomax. 16-bit rarely gets mentioned and don't even try 8.

There's a good bet he's just trolling and parroting common Fez hate. That's what about 95% of the response for it was like on most forums. Phil Fish really didn't help matters in being really annoying even by comparison to other French Canadians. But I loved it.

Also many people thought it was supposed to be a platformer or action game like Cave Story and compare it to those when it's really a puzzle game.

I bothered to go out of my way and read some of the negative reviews, most of them did actively compare it to cave story, which is unfair. It's a weird game, I fault no one for not liking it. I think it was marketed badly though and I can totally see someone who got it thinking it was like Cave Story with some perspective gimmicks feeling short shrifted.

>>3593313
To be fair, some of the puzzles took some thinking and if you don't take notice of things like >>3593226 it would seem obtuse. It's what I loved about the game, but also many people who got it at least initially weren't expecting that kind of game.

I prefer the detailed in games like Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 3 where fighting is action oriented but your skills and magic still decide most of it. Full action RPGs works better with the minimalistic because you need to be able to determine at once if something is harmful or decoration.

Going to full text command battles I think those should stay on the minimalist side too, it's closer to the original table top RPGs with stats to keep track of and you don't want lots of crap distracting you.

In short, detailed is good when you have time to enjoy it, it shouldn't get in the way of gameplay.

I think Fez is interesting in some aspects but still a shit game

You have this boring-ass first playthrough that takes a couple of hours and only then does the interesting part of the game open up to you. Considering you get a fly cheat in the second playthrough it almost makes me wonder why he bothered putting in platforming at all. Fish could've easily made Fez an ARG or straight up puzzle game instead.
