Why are these games so damn good? Which one does /vr/ like the best?

>> No.3592827

I basically have only played through the 4th, but I am pleased as punch to see that the charm in it was already present from the very first game.

It has to mainly be the music and sound effects.

>> No.3592956

It would be very hard to choose a favorite. The first that I got to play was 2, which I rented from Blockbuster. For years, I had wanted to play a game starring Wario, because I was intrigued by the shift from antagonist to protagonist. It threw me off that the evil Mario from Six Golden Coins was now the star of the next Super Mario Land. I never got to play Mario Land 2, so I was thinking that Mario had 'lost' that game. When I saw the print ads, I knew that wasn't the case, but I think the idea stuck with me regardless.

TL;DR: 2

I want to say 2 is my favorite, but I love 3's non-linearity and firmly believe 4 has the best and most refined aesthetic. I recently downloaded the soundtrack to 4 with the GBA compression edited out and have been enjoying listening to it off and on. The music of 4 is severely underrated imo, particularly that of the jungle level and toxic waste plant. It's a shame Nintendo will probably never revisit this amazing series.

2 and 3 are GOAT, VB and 4 are very good, and SML3 has aged like shit.

I don't get the recent backlash for SML3.

>> No.3595327

I hate to admit it but my issue with SML3 is that I get tempted to cheat and use the debugging mode they left in, where you press either start or select 16 times on the pause screen and it lets you edit pretty much any on-screen value.

I mean it's just so easy to cheat. When I fuck up I always end up using the debugger subconsciously.

>> No.3596332

SML3 was definitely a transition effort. You could tell that they wanted different gameplay than a Mario title, but I don't feel they figured that out the first time around. That being said, it's a solid platformer. I think the hats were a natural evolution of the Bunny ears from SML2. It's a decent pocket of the Warioverse for sure, especially compared against contemporaries on the GB.

I feel that the "Super Mario Land 3" (sub)title was really just a marketing gimmick to try not to alienate gamers too much who were waiting for an actual SML3. Kinda like Yoshi's Island having had a "Super Mario World 2" subtitle tacked on by NoA.

Coincidentally, both "fake sequels" are actually more interesting gameplay wise then their "prequels". Nothing personal against SMW or SML2 but Yoshi's Island and Wario Land blow them out of the water in terms of gameplay and originality.

On topic: Wario Land 2 was my childhood favorite. Still haven't finished WL3 yet so not sure if WL2 is still the best in the series. WL1 is also great for its hidden treasures. Never played the Virtual Boy, Gameboy Advance or Wii games.

They had the choice between rinse, repeat and possibly jump the shark, or do something else while faking some continuity with what people had gotten used to so as not to alienate them too much. The chose the latter, first giving traditional Mario games a swan song in the form of Super Mario All-Stars before pushing the Mario universe into a long period of Wario/Yoshi/RPG/3D etc. spinoffs - a period which lasted until NSMB came around.

>> No.3619431

Wario Land 2's branching paths were awesome.
I still remember my amazement when I discovered the secret exit in the very first level.
It was absolutely brilliant.

I wish there was more to finding all treasures in Wario Land 3, like a secret boss or something. There's three whole levels that don't even have to be entered to complete the game, as well as an entire sequence of treasures that leads up to the very last one - and then it just ends. Kind of disappointing.

And the golf minigame sucked.

I love the surreal cartoon violence of WL2, even as an adult.

I came off 1 which had a death state, and I would loose my shit at the sight of Wario being flattened like a pancake set on fire, or outright made drunk.

I mean I love Doom, Duke, Fallout and all that for it's violence, but there's a lack of good cartoon violence in games these days, not just Wile E. Coyote shit, but creative things like a basketball playing bunny rolling you up into a ball and using you to slamdunk, or an enemy chef tossing fucking cake into your mouth, turning you hideously obese, hindering your movement (but also making you so heavy you can stomp straight through cracked floors)

WL1 was one my fav GB game as a kid. 100%'d several times, got all endings etc, that feeling of discovering scecret levels, or even an entire secret world, that was amazing.

I also played the fuck out of 2 and 3 but 1 has a special place in my heart.

Tried to get into 4 once, but it didn't seem very appealing.
I quite enjoyed Shake Dimension though. It's not as complete as other Wario games, but the high quality graphics and music make it a great experience nonetheless.
